As a looong time deadhead, and guitar player, I have to tell you how absolutely fun it is to see you discovering this for the “first” time. Hearing and seeing your reaction to the “jam” part of the song is delightful. All of us deadheads knew what was coming, but you didn’t, and that was fun. Jerry’s guitar playing just takes flight here and doesn’t stop until the last note of the last song is played. Do yourself a favor and listen to this show in sequential order sometime, it will take you to some magical places. Ok, now for some info about the show you might find interesting. This is a “Betty-Board” recording. The person running the soundboard is Betty Cantor-Jackson. She would only periodically run the soundboard but when she did she had some kind of magical touch, ALL of her “boards” are amazing quality like this. This is the period where Jerry was playing his Travis Bean TB500, which made appearances very often through this period. It has a pretty special tone. And lastly, since you asked, that “effect” he’s using is an envelope filter. Specifically a Mu-tron. Same thing Stevie Wonder is using in “Higher Ground”. The effect is triggered by your “attack” on the strings. So when his playing gets more intense, so does the effect. My dude, keep on enjoying this show, and I’ll keep on enjoying your videos. 👍🏻 One last thing, I know you’ve done Morning Dew before, but please Dew this one, all of us want to see your reaction to the end of the song, please, for the love of deadheads everywhere, do the Dew. Take care my dude ✌🏻⚡️💀⚡️

The great thing about the envelope filter, is not only to you get this funky attack sound, but you can alter the settings to this wah/swell sound, like how Jerry uses it on Fire on the Mountain. In both cases, the effect is very sensitive to picking style/pressure.

David my brother, I hate to have to correct you, but Betty ran her own board side-stage, not the soundboard. That's why her boards sound so good - she wasn't beholden to the stage sound. And she taped a whole lot of shows from the Anthem Of The Sun shows up to the point she broke up with Brent Mydland.

One of the greatest moments in musical history is this version of Dancing. Just when you think Jerry had it in high gear, he takes it up to another plane. Also one of the best envelope (Mutron) solos he has ever done and unmatched by anyone IMO. And the tightness and syncopation of the band here is mind blowing. Of course the whole night was magical. My son just graduated from Cornell in December and his ceremony was in the hallowed Barton Hall where this show took place. 😇

Somehow comforting to see a pro have the exact same reaction. Keep doing what you do man I enjoy the channel.

This is one of the single greatest GD performances of any song over the course of their entire thirty year run. My opinion, of course. But they are just so damn tight while also jamming so hard. It's just a brilliant performance from a time when they were regularly dropping great shows on us. Even Donna sounds great, damn it. And yes, the whole band is doing their thing. All of em. But what Jerry does during that ten minutes before the chord changes always has and always will blow my damn mind.

Really enjoying your videos and learning great info along the way. Jerry is getting that sound by using his MuTron envelope filter (auto wah) in the down sweep position. Up sweep produces the typical “wah” sound like he uses on Estimated, Fire, Catfish John, etc. The rarely used down sweep mode reverses the effect to produce a “how”-like effect as heard here.

    Mike,
Great breakdown. This is the second time I've gone through it. but as far as the envelope follower... Well that's the main reason he had his guitars wired the way he did. That effect was dependent on the level of signal going into it. So when you would turn the volume down, it wouldn't work. ---depending on how you had it set up. BUT... with that internal guitar pre-amp set he had, well then the auto wah got the full signal no matter what his guitar volume was set at, so it always did the 'wah' sound no matter how he had the the guitar volume set. (Secret knowledge here, shh.)
    Keep up the good work!

I love the Jack Straw from Cornell as well. I know how to play it, but would love your take on it. Thanks for another great vid.

Michael, I appreciate what you're doing a great deal and it's entertaining to see you go through these. That said, I would recommend, FOR YOUR ENJOYMENT, listening to these tunes all the way through once before going back on camera to break them down. I understand the entertainment value of watching you experience this stuff for the first time on camera, and your chops are impressive. But you only get to experience this stuff for the first time once, and I know that experience is severely effected by stopping the music every 30 seconds to break it down. I would encourage you to get yourself into a good head space, and listen to the whole second set of this show, by yourself, for your own enjoyment, before going back to tackle it on camera. It's not like you're going to have it all mastered and you're viewers are all gonna holler "cheater!" Thanks for doing what you're doing.

I'm on the edge of seat every Cornell song. Fantastic. My buddy Lance played the Jerry part in our band. He got just as upset as you did trying to figure this out. Not sure of sound effect name, but he got on one of those old MP2s i think.

Great vid. Maybe my favorite one because it’s the first one done with the extended jamming that made the Grateful Dead famous and created the jam band era. The effect is the muTron envelope filter except with the drive on the down position. He mostly used it in the Up position except for this song and a few others. You will hear it again when you get to estimated Prophet from the same show. The funk jam at the end is, I believe, in ninths and is relatively simple once the pattern is set they just repeated two times

They use to play a non disco version in the late 60s early 70s and it rips. Things go in a completely different direction. They brought it back in the mid 80s in a more traditional arrangement.

My favorite version of this song- not in my top 20 or even 30 dead songs (I know- it's a cover) but this version lands in my top 10 list of live versions because it's just so damned funky and fun to crank up and shake your bones to. Just turn the volume button clockwise and try to remain seated or bob your head like an idiot- impossible! The hardest part when listening to this is trying to keep the volume at a safe level and or not snapping your head off of your neck as it bounces along with the beat that punches you square in the face for a full 16= minutes. Looove it!
