- Popular Irish Traditional Group from 1973, Na Filí (The Poets) playing an Irish slow air An Londubh is an Chéirseach (The Blackbird & The Thrush). Tomás Ó Canainn (Pipes), Matt Cranitich (Fiddle) & Tom Barry (Whistle).
Tomas O'Canainn (1930- ) is an Irish Uilleann piper, accordion player, singer, composer and writer. He was a founder of the group Na Fili with fiddler Matt Cranitch and whistle player Tom Barry in the late 1960's and 1970's. They gained considerable popularity and recorded several albums. Tomás O Canainn passed away on 15th September 2013.
I've heard a lot of Irish groups in my time but for me Na Fili was always the best for they kept the music simple, pure and elemental...which is the essence of Celtic music.
Tomas O'Canainn (1930-2013). RIP Tomas, you gentlest of souls.
These fellows are so loved and never spoiled their gifted talent Thanks so much for posting this makes me night Day and morrow better.
R.I.P. Tómas Ó Canainn 15th Sept.2013

Thanks so much this is so poignant at this moment as he has just left our world. Swift journey to your musical paradise and please return to us Rest in Peace tonas
Tomas O'Canainn has passed on to the great session in the sky. Never did get to meet him.
First saw them at the Loughborough Folk Festival in 1972 and they were my introduction to Irish traditional music and the pipes-became a hugh fan from the moment I saw them at the Saturday afternoon concert and luckily I bought their albums at the time as don't seem to have been released on cd.
A truly great man, dignified and kind man and will be a very much missed . Rest in Peace Tomas. God bless.
Tom Barry’s alive and well
I read Tomas` book "Traditional Music in Ireland" and found it very enlightening for a neophyte such as myself. Very nice player as well.
I found two re-releases of their music on emusic! Such luck, something great to listen to on a very snowy, blowy day in Philadelphia!
Just had a tune with Matt a weeks ago at the North Texas Irish Festival... great to see him here, and so young...
Beautiful!
I interviewed Tomás today for an essay i'm writing and he's fountain of information. Lovely fellah too
thanks for sharing Michael!
Thanks Joanie....Remember that group well. Tomás passed away a few years ago.
Beautiful music for sure and so glad you shared it!!
He did a fantastic interview with Cieran mac M inthe very early nineties..so interesting l recorded it on cassette
then played a blistering version of Paudeen O Rafferty on the whistle...Tomas was very gripping to listen to....
Thanks Clarebannerman - your posts are always top notch.
So lovely. We'll miss you, Tomas.
This song sang by Seamus Begley also this amazing sound ever Grandddddd thank you
Wonderful to hear and see these great players of the 60's/70's. Again thanks to you, Clarebannerman for sharing
This is a real treasure. Thank you for posting this. Very beautiful!
This type music must be in my DNA, ...love it!!. thanks for posting*****
Bill described this video perfectly - absolutely beautiful!
George

One of the one's that I really like is a Christmas song called Dia do Bheatha, and also the songs on an LP of Matt Cranitch with his sister Brîd called "éistigh seal" Beautiful rendition of AnChúilfhionn!
eileen healy Thank you, Eileen. I've saved a couple more videos of them to my "Watch Later" list. And I will look for the ones that you mentioned too. Spike
TheSpikehere Tomás Ó Canainn (Piper) died 15th September 2013.

Go haoibhinn ar fad. Ar dheis Dé go raibh Tomás.Thanks for sharing that beautiful piece.
Wally Whyton loved them and I got to know them through his shows on BFBS Germany. Never saw them live, which I regret much.
Excellent, as usual. You truly are the greatest source of our ceol agus rinca..
Go raibh maith agat.
Outstanding as usual
Some gems you have here..
Dude, this is classic stuff! Thanks for posting it!
Wow, so glad to hear this. A piper I've not heard of here in the wild frontier lands. Thank you for sharing.
thanks.. that was a lovely start to the day
First time I hearde this beautiful song I swear I heared him singing:
...and stand where the PIGS meet the sky 0:54 ... and even the wind sings in JUNE 1:46
RIP Tomas.
I myself would listen to a lot of old recordings and performances of pipers and especially fiddle players and they all have unique elements but most have certain chartiteristics that you can pinpoint the time period they were played on stylistically I mean but this sounds so modern and amazing! It reminds me of the brendan voyage the way it is paced and arranged! Beautiful
Does the name Crehan and Mullagh, County Clare ring a bell..
Well yeah I'm a Crehan haha piping and fiddleing. I'm down in mullagh every year for the willy clancy every year haha Why?
it makes you wonder of the origins of this great instrument far ahead of the electric guitar, the great highland bagpipe had the third drone added and that was also monumental
Wow thats lovely. ..thanx for posting
Good upload remember these fellows playing in Newman House (U C D) t Stephen's Green around the same time...the music was sweet then before washboard percussive accompaniment and they didn't even have a bodhran, dark glasses or black hats!...still a few exponents around like Martin Hayes and Peadar O Riada.. Joe Burke.
That's a really nice video!
Tomas O'Canainn is still playing the pipes in session in Cork City, last I heard. Hope to get down to see him. He has a website, even though he must be in his 80s. Thanks for posting this Mr. Bannerman.
Super video!!!!!
¿Te refieres al LP "Chanters Tune" de Na Fili? UNA OBRA DE ARTE: me pregunto por qué no lo reeditan en CD, pero visto el nivel general, mi pregunta retórica queda más que contestada.
Na Fili should I expect poems ?
@teery59 try searching for "Seamus Ennis" on YT
Did Ray O'Shea play with na Filí at some stage ?
