A solution I've been using for my rapier is a piece of transparent plastic tube with a squirt of hot glue down the end. I tape it on with some coloured tape, leaving the tip transparent. Has worked great for safety, and you can see if the steel is starting to penetrate through. I tried having a ball bearing welded on, but that snapped at the weld where the heat had affected the strength of the steel...
Thnx for the video! Bullet casings with primer intact - would make for a very interesting play ;) Any advice for sidesword tip protectors if you don't have a rolled tip? (ala Darkwood)
+planetbobful For sidesword I would be happy with any of the options in the video and we have a range of them in the club. Like sabre though, I think my preference would be a rolled/folded tip.
Y'all be careful with thrusts with rolled tips, I've used them for years thinking they were safe but we've had a pretty big incident where someone ended up being empalled by one... ( with a regenyei feder) Be careful, be safe!
+NeonsStyle A ball tip could work fine, in fact historically a padded ball was sometimes used, large enough that it couldn't go through the eye socket. Though we don't have that problem anymore with good quality fencing masks. Something as large as a golf ball would be horrible though, both for handling and also how much it would catch and snag on everything. I think the fluted or rolled tips are an elegant solution that work well.
+Will nonya Yes that can work on the more open archery blunts, but the Darkwood rubber tip is the shape of the tip of a blade. No room to put something flat inside.
Ferrules for walking sticks tend to be very dense & have metal washers in them. It seems strange that something designed to stop people getting impaled, rather than protecting wood/floors is less sturdily designed. Logic...
+Benjamin Salt Indeed. I think you will find that it is simply because walking stick ferrules are mainstream and mass market. Specialist martial arts tools are not put through such rigorous test and trials, except by their end users.
+Academy of Historical Fencing Basically, I would love it if you had an on body or boom mic setup. I'm guessing that you're using the camera mic which makes it hard to hear you compared to other channels I watch. My speakers are maxed out and it's still very soft.
+Roy Scott Thats strange. I can understand the ones in the hall being further from an omnidirectional mic, but these articles come out really loud on all my systems. I only need to have my volume at about 30% to hear them very loud and clear.
likely his head is brushing against a green-screen behind him edit: took another a look, definitely green-screen, you can see the distortion going away anytime he leans forward

Did the rolled tip break or what happened?
What do you use for protection on tips of Black fencer steel sabers?
Nothing. We tip all Black Fencer steel swords except the sabre range, because we find the tip size and amount of flex they have is perfectly adequate.
What's wrong with welding a steel ball on the end? Say one the size of a large marble or golf ball?

I know some people put a washer inside the rubber tip to keep it from piercing through.

I love you videos. I hope your audio improves soon... 😁
+Roy Scott Thanks, but what problem do you have with the audio?

+Roy Scott You mean on the lessons in the training hall rather than these articles?
+Academy of Historical Fencing Unfortunately these articles too.

does anyone else see these weird optical thing around his head?
+Will nonya Yeah a weird bit of distortion, strange.
+Will nonya I thought it was just the LSD
