White Guys Surprise Locals with Rare Chinese Dialect, They are Stunned

  • Me and my Chinese-speaking white friends went to Brooklyn Chinatown to practice our Mandarin, Cantonese, and the rare dialect of Fuzhounese (also known as Fuzhou dialect or Hokchew / Hock Chew), which people speak in this part of Brooklyn. We got lots of smiles and laughs and funny reactions and it turned into a really fun day! It’s always nice to make connections with people using language skills. An inspiring video for people looking to learn languages, I hope!

    • @BradleyTruax7
      @BradleyTruax7 4 года назад +11

      Milton Holley it would be nice if you followed up your an opinion with some sort of facts to substantiate a claim. I don’t know a whole lot about Nelson Mandela but to empathize with your point I have found mother Theresa to be quite a disgusting human being after reading several of her novels. So I don’t assume he is an entirely good person. The message is what I was sharing. Not an opinion on what I thought about his character. Mother Theresa had a lot of wise sayings but I don’t think much of her as a person. Hopefully this doesn’t sound like an ego thing on my part. But if you don’t understand the message just ask for clarification next time and I’m sure plenty of people would be happy to help you understand the message.

    • @BradleyTruax7
      @BradleyTruax7 4 года назад +7

      Milton Holley I appreciate you bringing to my attention what type of person he is. But on the other hand that’s not what this discussion is about. It’s simply about connecting with humans. And investing your own time to learn their native tongue and employ it shows a huge sign of respect and in turn they are very gracious to acknowledge that. So I do appreciate you showing me my ignorance. I just just didn’t want to go down this road in the first place. My use of his words had nothing to do with Nelson Mandela but about humans in general. If I can’t get this through than I don’t know what to tell you. But I appreciate your reply.

      Mandarin on the other hand has a completely different way of saying things (syntax), difficult pronounciation and intonation that could easily lead to misunderstanding and possibly the most complex writing system there is.

Out of my family, only a hand full of people, including myself, can speak it. Everyone born in 2005 and after can barely understand or cant at all. Familiar with a lot of other languages as well. 1. It's far from easy and is going to be very challenging.
      2. You are going to want to give up at times or get distracted by other things
      3. Practice makes perfect.

    So amazingly refreshing to see after ignorant people tell others in America to speak English and here is an extraordinary person who has the patience to learn their native language and connect with other people. 😍 💕

    I cry sometimes just watching the reactions from people. learning other cultures and showing intelligence is such a beautiful thing.

    They tried to teach me french in school and i was useless, but picking grapes for two months, you pick up a lot,by immersing yourself in it. It also acts as a spur to learn the local language or starve. Then we picked grapes in germany, learnt far more than ever in school. I 've largely forgotten it all now, but that was over 40 years ago. I watch for the same reason everybody else does. You are educational, funny and people take it as a compliment that you have taken the trouble to learn a bit of their native tongue. Over here in England, you might get mistaken for taking the rise.

    I absolutely love these videos! Just seeing the peoples faces light up...that's human connection! You are amazing. I speak French, English, some Dutch and some German...I can only imagine how hard it was to learn, but clearly, it's about passion and a sense of adventure! Thanks for these wonderful moments.

      Just happens. dialects and cultures sometimes fade away with the times. same reason why certain things aren’t used in America anymore that were used before.
      I was going to do a long rant about dialects but i just dislike them. I want the main dialect to work everywhere and not to have to learn 5+ dialects just to understand 1 country’s language...

    In San Diego, I meet groups of Chinese tourists (as well as EVERYONE else) They were exceedingly amused at me pushing my chicken in a baby carriage. There were lots of laughs and lots of pics, but I couldn't help thinking "I wish Xiaoma was here!" I said the name; and two of the chinese tourists jumped up and down excitedly. THEY knew who you were!!! You've got fans!!!!!
