  • Did you know: The Oakland Raiders called Candlestick Park home before the 49ers ever did? Or that it featured Astroturf for 8 years? Or that a baseball scoreboard stayed hidden and intact for 13 years even after the Giants left?
These are my final photos from Candlestick park in December 2013, to go along with some interesting facts about the stadium you may never have known before.

I used to look at Candlestick Park’s lights almost every night from my Grandparents, The Scurrys, kitchen window. I could hear the crowd cheer too. My Big Daddy CJ and I spent a lot of days there for San Francisco Giants games. Great memories! #BVHP #FTTB

The plaque at 23:03 was moved to Oracle Park shortly after the Stick was demolished. It's on display near the Lefty O'Doul gate.

The nostalgia has got to me!
I really wish Levi was on the spot of Candlestick. I enjoy the Niners in the South Bay but we're not the Santa Clara 49ers!!

No need to be. The LA Rams were the LA Rams in Anaheim for fifteen seasons, and it's 30 miles south of LA. Dallas Cowboys play 20 miles from Dallas. The Detroit Piston play 30 miles from Detroit. They can become the San Francisco Bay Area 49ers, I guess. I want someone to take them from York, get a new stadium built in that industrial wasteland area between the old Bayshore Highway and 101 just to the south of Candlestick Point, near Caltrain Bayshore stop and Sunnydale Muni stop.

Well, also, people say that SF is forty miles from Levi's, but I beg to differ. San Francisco International Airport is actually in San Francisco, though in San Mateo County. SF cops patrol it, not Burlingame or Milbrae. The airport is San Francisco municipal property. That would make Levi's about 32 miles south of there.

So many memories watching this (and learned a lot too). Remember my parents loved buying tickets in that right field Pavilion section (not my favorite seats ever) for Giants games in the 90's. Glad I got to experience this stadium quite a bit as a kid before both teams left, even if the stadium had a lot of issues. I was able to get tickets to the Paul McCartney concert before they tore it down. Definitely was a bucket list moment for me and a really fun night.

The First Base Dugout was the Giants. Tidbit about Astroturf. Once they tore it out at Candlecrap, they moved it to the Alameda County Fairgrounds. Some of the exhibition buildings at the Fairgrounds had turf inside. The Turf was faded after the 4th season of use. Was at the October 17, 1989 game, I saw that guy climbing up the light tower to fix the streamers that were attached to the light towers. The noise those towers made when the quake started was so weird. I'll never forget that day. There are a few fan videos of the aftermath of the quake. I'll always remember right after the Quake hit, Everyone cheered! But once it got harder and harder they all stopped and almost panicked. After it was over the P.A played the evacuation video that played before each game. I asked my Girlfriend if the Quake constituted an emergency? She didn't think that was too funny. We were sitting in dead center field upper box 61 Row 1. As we exited we had to go up to get out and saw a man walking down the steps holding a baby size piece of concrete. I asked him where he got that? He said it fell on his seat from the roof! We both lived in Cherryland near you. It took us 5 hours to get home....

    Saints fan here:
Love this video. As a rival fan I remember all those old NFC West divisonal games at the Stick.
The first team I respectfully hated as a kid was the 49ers in the 90's. Rice, Montana, Lott & company were so, so dominant. Man this brings back foundational football memories.

Cool little fact here, the old giants scoreboard was still there because they could not get a crane under the seats to move it out and could not move the seats out like they did for baseball season because the movement rig was broken and never revived.

  • @jamesoconnor1156

Enjoyed this, and many memories of Giants games attended. One fact (baseball) overlooked is always thought interesting only stadium in league where visitor dugout was bare bones and NO tunnel to clubhouse. Out on island! I guess at one point league forced Giants to add a restroom for visitor dugout. I'm sure opposing teams hated having long walk from dugout to right field line to clubhouse. Home dugout was warming also from heat from tunnel...

Thank you for this.... As a kid growing up in the 90s I loved going to Giants games at the Stick. Question for you (or anyone who might see this)... I was always under the impression that the press box down what would have been the LF line was for football and that there was one behind home plate that was for baseball. Was this not the case? Just thinking that that would have been a weird angle for the Giants broadcasters. Appreciate any history you can shed.

The Giants didn't "eventually" move into Candlestick. It was built for them. That was the best version. Open to the Bay with the right field bleachers but with plenty of room to walk behind the right field fence and wrestle with other kids for a home run ball. Also, the open area behind the left field fence you could jump into to try and get a hone run ball.

I always surprise Raider fans with that fact, that their first two seasons, they had no place to play in the East Bay, and San Francisco gladly hosted them for two seasons, 1960 and '61. There are plenty of photos on the Internet, and they're wearing black helmets, and black jerseys and white pants, with gold trim. One finds a vid clip of a Charger v Raider game at Candlestick in their 1961 highlight film, and it's on YT. The gridiron was laid out exactly as it would again in 1971 when the 49ers moved in. Right field bleacher seating was on that east sideline.

Al Davis was such a narcissist that he did not have the Raiders play in their 1960 uniforms during the 2010 season, when the old original AFL teams wore throwback uniforms. He had them play in their 1963 unis. Sucked! But Davis was the NFL's version of Demented Donnie, the former guy.
