      I really liked Rangers Ballpark(Choctaw Stadium), but i think they should've put a retractable roof over it when they first built it! It's just too damn hot here in Texas in the summer time to be watching a baseball game, even at 7:00 at night! I think they rush-jobbed Globe Life Field though. Could've made it more retro-modern if they had taken their time and planned it better!

    As a guy who grew up in the SF bay, candlestick was hallowed ground. The feeling I got seeing that stadium from the 101 as a kid can’t be described. The place was cold and windy as hell, and it was perfect. It was our place to watch our beloved giants and niners in the 80’s/90’s, and I’m really sad it’s not there anymore

    Thanks for the history of our old multiple use stadiums from the 70’s. Having lived in San Diego since 1971, I’ve attended countless Padres, Chargers & Aztec games at The Murph (which it was called before Qualcomm). Also we went to many rock concerts in the 70, 80 & 90’s.
    One of the best features of the stadium was how easy it was to drive (great access to the freeways) to & we’d tailgate for hours before the event. So sad to see it torn down but that’s progress in the 2020’s.

    I remember often going to Qualcomm (or as locals called it, "The Q") in 1989 and 1990 when it was Jack Murphy Stadium (The Murph) for both Padres and Chargers games. The ambience was quite nice at that time because the extra seating had not yet been installed.
    As for rain at The Q, I went to the 2009 Holiday Bowl between Nebraska and Arizona; and it drizzled throughout the entire game. I still enjoyed the game though.

  • @MrRichicago
    @MrRichicago 11 месяцев назад

    The Chargers and Padres played at Jack Murphy Stadium (Later Qualcomm Stadium) when it opened. The extra seats were added in the mid to late 90s to continue to host Super Bowls. It sucked because they closed off the view of the hills and really was the beginning of the end of it being an enjoyable place to catch a game.

      "The coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in San Francisco". Falsely attributed to Mark Twain, this sentiment aptly describes the SF Bay weather. The wind-chill near the Bay is just unrelenting, even on sunny days.
      "The multitude of pleasant things by which all people of San Francisco are surrounded are not talked of at all. No-they damn the wind, and they damn the dust, and they give all their attention to damning them well, and to all eternity." Mark Twain (actual newspaper article he wrote)

    Oppressive heat was an issue with Arlington Stadium, which preceded Globe Life Park, so I don't know why they didn't just go for an indoor or retractable roof stadium then.
    And if I recall, the issue with Turner Field was the location. Most of the Braves fans lived in the suburbs and were reluctant to schlep into downtown Atlanta for a ball game. So the team moved out to them.

    Maybe it's me. I don't know, but I would've mentioned the Pontiac Silverdome. The Detroit Lions played there from 1975 to 2002 but it still stood hoping that they would host another team from another sport. It ended up being an Ultimate Frisbee venue. It closed permanently in 2012 or something. Got demolished a few years ago and an Amazon warehouse is built on the site. One thing you mentioned during the video was how domes without natural light are phasing out. In terms of natural light, the Silverdome had a frabric roof and it would be very bright during the day. Lions current stadium doesn't have that. It has a concrete roof and some windows on the side but in terms of brightness Pontiac Silverdome was much brighter. Also the Detroit Pistons played there from 1978 to 1988 where they would sometimes have games during the day and same deal as afternoon football games. Another reason why I liked the Silverdome is that's where they had WrestleMania III. They set an indoor attendence record(93,173 at that time) for a sporting event. Just sayin'.

    So the Rogers Center/Skydome which recently lost its football team, held a special track track and field match race, many concerts and is often the start for many stadium tours, has held international soccer, international cricket, monster truck shows and features seats that can rotate in the park is not a multi-use stadium?

    I don't get the hate for Turner Field (as someone who never went). It seemed to be, outside the upper deck seat issue that so many stadiums face, a perfectly fine venue for baseball in Atlanta with the added historic benefit of it being a former Olympic venue. Heck, the Big O in Montreal hosted the Expos for longer than the Braves placed at Turner and it was a beautiful mess of a baseball venue that still plagues taxpayers too this day (in a Province that pays higher taxes than anywhere else in North America).
