This is beyond incredible. What a cool guy... Bobby was literally shaking. I can't think of anyone in skateboarding who would appreciate this more than him. Truly, one of our most cherished 80's skateboarding historians. This is just too cool.
It was always crazy to me how Neil found these quirky interactions within the larger skateboarding world through the small lens of Huntsville Alabama. I've always seen him as this pretty intriguing 'DIY' natured person, so it seems like the law of attraction tends to pull toward him in that sense. A lot of these stories I never really knew fully, so thanks for picking his brain about all the history behind it. There was such a great skateboard / music scene in HSV in the 90s and some of my best memories stem from the community we were all a part of in that era. Also, Bandito Burrito is still the best food in the world.
Neil Blender, living in Dayton was so surreal. I grew up watching "hey Neil are you having fun". Sometimes Neil and Mark Hinesman would drop by the house. I barely knew how to act, it was so f****** crazy Neil sitting at the table singing public enemy. "Here's a letter to the New York Post."
Wow.. what an amazing video.. some real museum worthy pieces in this guys collection. mind was thoroughly blown when he pulled out the layout for the memory screen cover.
Mind Blowing Stuff! Thank you for keeping your eyes open and shining a light on the rather forgotten things and people involved with skateboarding history! Incredible
Those of us who grew up with all these great skaters know how magical it all was and still is. As we get older and begin the phase of saying goodbye to some of the greatest people to ever ride those useless wooden toys all I can say is...thank you for it all.
That was a great story and some great stuff! I’m stoked I still have my G&S jersey.. I’m assuming Dan Goldberg printed that Neil graphic on the Jersey, He did lots of the fun funky prints like that..
Jim, was the team still riding the Fibrefrex decks in 1980 or did you guys already ride the bigger boards? I was riding the warptail 2 at that time as everyone quit skating and my friend sold me his deck.
I used to have one of those lenticular Santa Cruz stickers, I believe they were called "rip blip" , (based on the 'rip-grip' i guess) - those things were so sick
Bobby wants to kill anyone with old sk8 stuff he loves lol.......Bobby i meet you at your fav coffee shop in BK, i was visiting from FL you were so nice and chill....much blessings:)
Man, an even better story about that board with your name on it is your wifes sisters man traded a sack of bud for it so he could send it to you. And I'm not sure how kendall got it but something about southern fried skates had it.
Neil was living in Xenia, I. think, we were from Cincinnati and was friends with The visitor center. Small world he dated my friends sister at the time ,early 90's and he had a guitar in every room of his place. I won't # eggs.
Neil gifting that stuff to Bobby is the best parts of the vid. What a rad dude
Bobby is a national treasure.
