The ABA had many great basketball players, who could live at the 3 point line in the NBA today. Louie Dampier put up numbers and statistics had held up well to Steven Curry. Yes Curry had a rival, shooting from 3 from 1967 to 1976. The merger with the ABA saved the NBA. Made the NBA much better. 1976 to Larry Bird and Magic Johnson was only 3 seasons.
I remember him during my growing years. He was part basketball player, part acrobat and ballet dancer with extreme skills and court intuition. DR j operated like no other. I consider him the best NBA player in history decades after retirement. Dr j is still the bomb 💣.

I'm old enough to witness, to see ( tho not in person ) all the greats from the early 70's to this day...I"ve seen magic, bird, jordan and so on of their rookies days till they retired, but STILL, Dr J would be the one I'd spend my last dollar on to watch him play live...The man the player was truly special, and truly inspirational. And he has THEE most iconic moniker ( Dr J ) in all of sports, not just in basketball, imo..

Never heard a bad word said about Julius Erving. Met him a few times(He was on the way to the Spectrum) and was a really nice guy to fans... Philly fans, that are hard to like....lol.
I can vouch for him giving his time. I saw him play once in atlanta and he stayed until everyone who wanted to shake his hand or get an autograph got it. Also offering his address to a fan to send his converse Dr J shoes to be signed. Simply the best.
Before Jordan, the Dr was that guy. He elevated the game to another level in terms of creativity. Jordan emulated what the Dr did & then took it to another level.
Literrally a great player and person. Back in the late 70's on a rainy day in Center city Phildelphia he gave my Mom a ride home, so she did not have to wait for the septa bus and get soaked. He was one of the nicest person to take time to do the kindest things.
If ABA stats will be honored (which is long overdue), Dr. J (including Gilmore, Issel, Gervin, and a few more) greatness will be credited further. He belongs to the Legends among Legends. Points 30,026 (24.2 ppg) Rebounds 10,525 (8.5 rpg) Assists 5,176 (4.2 apg)

Amazingly, I got to see him play 3 times in the NBA, including a playoff game. Each game he did things that the english language is challenged for adjectives and adverbs to describe it. He took a shot to the head from Mike Bantam of the ABA/NBA Indiana Pacers. Instead of fighting, he scored the next 14 points in a row, and just punished Indiana. In that stretch he made a shot I still struggle to begin to describe it. For STREET BALL, he taught us that you don't fight a guy for a cheap shot or dirty play. You let your game punish the opponent. That is something I never forgot, for the game was more physical then, because of league rules. Let your game punish an opponent for a cheap shot, not your fists.
Yep, 40 years this year.. I was at The Doctors Last Game he ever played. Bucks, playoffs. .. when the Bucks finally beat the 6ers.. 1986 I believe, they played "Philadelphia Freedom" by Elton John on the PA after the game..
I grew up watching the Kentucky Colonels of the American Basketball Association. Dr. Julius Erving was a great basketball player, that you did not want to see play your home team. Louie Dampier was a Stephen Curry class marksman, and so was Darrell Carrier. The ABA has stars who could live on the 3 point line in the NBA today. They were not shy about taking the 3 point shots.
