    Can you imagine the surprises she has in store for her now? Hearing birds chirping for the very first time, experiencing her friend's distinct laughter, flinching at the terrifying clash of thunder, feeling the beauty of music...
    I'd love to see this kind of scientific progress in restoring vision to the blind in the next few decades. Perhaps quite soon, giving sight and sound back to humans will be as routine as mending a broken bone.

    • @jessicaoley983
      @jessicaoley983 9 лет назад +2

      Cosmic Rogue Although this may seem nice you also have to understand that this isn't the case for all Deaf people. Being Deaf isn't a, as you put it, "Broken bone" that needs to be fixed and a lot of Deaf people with Cochlear Implants don't like them. The "it doesn't sound funny" that she was talking about refers to the fact that people that are profoundly deaf that get cochlear implants will never hear normally and it's very hard to live with not understand the world around you without sign language.

    •  9 лет назад +4

      Jessica Oley The fact that the implant doesn't "fix" hearing completely yet is a bad argument. With research the implants will get better and better. It is thus not unthinkable that deafness will be a thing of the past in the near future. I am with Cosmic on this one.

    • @MandrakeDCR
      @MandrakeDCR 8 лет назад +10

      +Jessica Oley - this is the biggest farce I've ever heard... that deaf from birth people will never hear right. What the hell is right? Nobody hears the same and there is a huge variance of what any given person can even hear compared to another that are able to hear.
      What do you think the brain is doing with your ear? It is doing nothing but interpreting electrical impulses. They've been studying this for decades and although it might be a bit new just yet, I can honestly say that my cousin who was deaf from birth and got her brain stem implants at 38 can hear fantastic.
      Nobody can get inside someone else's head and hear what they hear. All I know is that after 6 months she can hear what anyone is saying and know where it's coming from just as good or better than I can. She loves music, nothing seems 'out of whack' for her that we can tell. And her own speech patterns are starting to become articulate! She can hear her own voice so she's learning to talk on her own. It's freakin amazing. She says it keeps 'smoothing out' for her everyday. The most noticeable thing she said is that she can hear lower and lower sounds all the time. Like my voice sounds smoother (it is more baritone) each time we get the chance to talk.
      Are you bitter or something? Hoping that implants or some other method would be as commonplace to repair a deaf person's hearing, as it is to mend a broken bone is today - is nothing to condemn someone for, it is a hope that everyone shares. What are you saying, that you hope it does not become easier? That to be deaf is more dignified than to repair the malfunctioning organ or some flaky God made me this way stuff?
      Hey, if that's your bag, then more power to you. I want everyone in my family and circle of friends to have the best life possible. If they want to be able to hear, then I want them to have that opportunity. People like you can piss up a rope... don't need you impeding the amazing research that made my cousin's new life possible! Just wow!

    • @Simsimdu38
      @Simsimdu38 8 лет назад

      +OptimusPryhme The fact that this worked for your cousin does not allow you to think its works for everyone and every deaf people should try it. This surgery works for some of them, for others it doesn't, and surgents and doctors love to show a these videos but never show what happends to deaf who were implented and learn their all childhood trying to hear and speak without learning sign language and loses all social life as adults cause they cant communicate both with hearing people and deaf people. You dont know the fucking situation, you just know about your cousin and his both ears so dont judge people who fight for something way bigger than you.

    • @MandrakeDCR
      @MandrakeDCR 8 лет назад +9

      +Simon Colas Get over yourself. I didn't say it worked for everyone. I said that the statement was a farce. Condemning something that helps so many people because it doesn't work for a few is a bunch of crap.
      You don't even read coherently - the person said "...the fact that people that are profoundly deaf that get cochlear implants will never hear normally..." which is why I responded the way I did because it is patently *false* and I know from first hand experience that it is such.
      Try reading more before you post. Maybe then you will stop being yet another person who cries about being judged while all the time, *you* are the one playing judge and jury.
      How about an easier example?
      I have JME (type of early onset epilepsy) - it took 15 friggin' *years* before I found the right stupid cocktail of meds to become seizure free. All kinds of unmentionable side effects from experimental drugs and procedures, but I was lucky enough to finally find something that worked. Actually - it was a medication that came out just a year or so before we tried it. Medical progress right?
      What's the point of the story? There are a lot of people who *never* become seizure free. That medication will never work for. So we should just give up on finding new medications, devices, or otherwise?
      Kiss my ass. You're talking out the side of yours and have no idea what you're talking about. Of course doctors show the good side in public videos - they do the bad show & tell behind the curtain when it comes down to it. You always have a choice, and a well informed on at that. It's idiots like you that cause some of the best choices we have to be taken away.
      Have a nice day.

    This is the most touching video I have ever seen. As a musician, she made me cry. First she was surprised by her own voice that she couldn't talk, and I loved to watch how she took the instrument and was amazed with the sound. She couldn't recognize her mother's voice (I guess) because she was so used to read her lips. Had to watch many times because of my tears. Thank you for sharing and wish all the happiness for this young girl.

    Hi my name is Shane Burns. I used to grow up throughout my life with hearing aids. Last May, I was finally implanted and activated on June 10. Right now, Im still learning how to interpret sound and CI give me more hearing than what my hearing aids can! In fact CI outperform my hearing aids already! Right now, I can almost understand people's voice even Im not looking at them! And Im starting to understand some words on the TV. Hooray for CI!
    P.S. Love that video, it make me tear up little bit:)

    I suffered with hearing aids for over 25 years after I lost most of my hearing due to my service in the US Air Force. Finally, hearing aids just could not do anything for me. I received one cochlear implant, then a year later I received one for my other side. Wearing two is 100% better than wearing one! I can use the telephone again and listen to music and the sound quality is as close to normal as technology can make it. Cochlear implants have improved the quality of my life in ways I could never have imagined before.

      No kidding. I'm just beyond words that this could be anything but beautiful, and even if someone dislikes it, it is just so idiotic to even bother to dirty such a wonderful thing with a thumbs down. Moments and opportunities that are hopeful and bring joy, beauty and love into someone's life should be cherished and celebrated. There is so much pain, loss and hurt in the world I'm not sure how someone could be so flippant about the privileges they take for granted that they miss the beautiful moments in life. Then to sour one of those moments with their outside negative view? Ugh, please. Seriously? Take a look around man, this is life, this moment. They could have appreciated the beauty or let the inspiring moment pass by while they took it for granted and spit on it. Living in such a way will always have an equal effect in your own life. Their worlds will become a reflection of what they put forth to the universe. Everybody eventually gets what they give. Most never recognise it though. Makes me wonder what would have gotten a thumbs up? Deafening a person and taking away their ability to hear? Weird 96 people.

    • @mykailadabadest11

      What I meant was, why not let us believe what we want to believe without being judged. I don't mind that y'all are atheist, that has nothing to do with me. But telling Christians that they are idiots and that they need to "grow up" because of what they believe in, is very disrespectful and childish. So, no one is preventing me from anything. Thanks for your concern.

You assume I am talking to you when clearly you said nothing to offend me. So, once again, have a nice day, sir/ ma'am.

    I really don't understand those people who disliked this video.. I'm suffering and started to deteriote my hearing since 4 years old (mild) till now ( profound ).. (I'm 29)... wearing hearing aid never helps me that much... i can't even hear bird chirping , wind and other high frequency soundss, i cant even differentiate c to ch,sh, p to t,th,ph and m to n without looking at their mouth talking.. and a month ago.. amusia (tone deaf) occured.. every notes i hear is out of tunes.. i no longer play piano..
    well.. by watching this video gives me hope.. thank you and you made me cry and happy.

      Thank you for sharing your experience. I have had hearing loss since childhood, and now that I'm in my 40's it's worsened. But for me it's nothing profound, yet it's bad enough that many higher frequency sounds are not heard, but thankfully I don't have to lip read so long as there isn't any whispering.

      Je praat perfect man! Nice. Ben je volledig doof geboren of maar aan één oor? Mijn dochtertje van 6 heeft ook CI's gekregen rond jou leeftijd, vandaar dat ik het vraag. Ik maak me soms toch nog een beetje druk over hoe haar spraak uiteindelijk gaat zijn als ze rond jou leeftijd is.

    • @EnergyReviewers
      @EnergyReviewers 10 лет назад +1

      Volledig doof aan beide oren. Ik heb dan ook jarenlang logopedie gehad, vanaf mijn implantatie tot mijn 9e. Ik heb tot groep 6 op een doveninstituut gezeten ( Guyot in Haren ). Ik ben er zelfs een jaar overgeslagen daar. In groep 8 heb ik nog een halfjaar wekelijks gesprekken gehad met een logopedist om mijn articulatie te kunnen verbeteren omdat ik een beetje binnenmonds praat en dat mijn lippen niet synchroom lopen aan beide kanten. Dit probleem is inmiddels wel verhopen, maar door die 2,5 jaar taalachterstand blijf ik een vreemd accent hebben. Dit is ook een beetje te combineren met het Fries/ Franse accent wat mijn ouders hebben ;) Heel goed om te horen dat jullie ook de beslissing hebben gemaakt om uw dochter te laten implanteren. Kan ze al goed horen en praten? ;)

    • @kevinsozanski
      @kevinsozanski 10 лет назад

      Ben blij dat het een Fries accent is, die van mij die krijgt straks een Limburgs accent, haha! Zij gaat naar een school binnen het speciale onderwijs gericht op kinderen met gehoor, spraak -en taalproblemen. Ben je na groep 6 op Guyot naar het reguliere onderwijs gegaan? Het gaat redelijk goed met haar. Qua spraak -en taal zit ze ongeveer op hetzelfde niveau als andere ~ 4-jarige kinderen zonder beperking. Zeg alsjeblieft geen u btw, ik ben 25 man! Haha

    • @EnergyReviewers
      @EnergyReviewers 10 лет назад

      Ja, daarna ben ik naar het regulier onderwijs gegaan. Ik zit momenteel in de 3e klas. Die ene jaar die ik had overgeslagen ben ik weer teruggegaan toen ik naar het regulier onderwijs ging. Ik ga als ik van mijn school afga een opleiding doen in de automanagement. En dat is prima hoor, als je 6 jaar bent, en een woordenschat hebt van een horende 4-jarige. Dat had ik toen niet ;) Ik kan jullie er nu wel van verzekeren dat het later ook net zo goed gaat als mij of misschien nog beter ;) Als je die kinderen pas in de eerste klas naar het regulier onderwijs wilt sturen weigeren ze vaak omdat ze gehecht zijn aan hun dovencultuur. Dat heb ik nu nog steeds, ik zoek wel eens mijn dove vrienden op om eens samen te kunnen chillen. Als de kinderen 10 jaar zijn kunnen ze best voor het eerst naar het regulier onderwijs. Hahah, da's best een jonge vader of niet ;)

    • @kevinsozanski
      @kevinsozanski 10 лет назад

      EnergyReviewers
      Ja, we kijken aan hoe het met haar gaat en op basis daarvan kijken we samen met de school hoe we het straks precies gaan aanpakken m.b.t. het reguliere onderwijs, maar ik wil haar in ieder geval voor de brugklas erop hebben. Ach ja, subculturen hou je toch altijd, daar is verder niks mis mee. Vrienden zijn vrienden, of ze nou doof zijn, of skaters, of hardcore, whatever. Dat is allemaal niet relevant. Zolang je je er maar lekker bij voelt. Maar thanks voor je info man, dat apprecieer ik ten zeerste! Je hebt mijn dag in ieder geval gemaakt! Ik ben al een tijdje op zoek naar iemand van jouw leeftijd met een CI om te kunnen kijken hoe het nu precies zit qua spraak/taal. En nogmaals, ik hoor aan jou niks geks afgezien van het Fries accent! ;-) En ja, ik was er erg vroeg bij qua kids!

    I'm scheduled to go in for cochlear implant surgery this Tuesday. I've worn a hearing aid all my life on the right but nothing on the left side. I'm hoping the CI will give me more sound with good clarity. Im scared but excited. Im worried about the quality of the sound with the CI since I'm 36 years old. Congratulations to you! I hope my experience is similar to this!

      Good luck to you and I hope it's gone well for you. I've heard it's alot of work for some, while others seem to have an easier time of it. I have had hearing loss since childhood, but now that I'm in my 40's, it's worsened for sure, but not so much I have to wear hearing aids, but it has worsened noticeably in the last couple of years and at my next hearing check I'm sure that discussion will come up.

    While I was watching this video the doorbell rang,
    It's my coaching staff, I totally forgot about the staff meeting
    7 coaches standing at my door looking at me with streams of tears rolling down both cheeks, to top everything off a snot bubble was taking shape.
    Last time my assistant coaches saw me cry was 8 years ago when we won our 1st State Championship title game.
    What's Wrong... WHAT 'S WRONG... WHAT'S HAPPENED... Trying not to laugh but trying to talk during this kind of crying was impossible.
    I'm a Rancher /Cowboy/ HS football coach and I'm standing there with a snot bubble blowing a bubble the size of a grape try to explaine to 7 old school coaches about this video with no luck.
    Sit down everybody and watch this video...
    This video had 8 football coaches with snot bubbles... Awesome

    I know this is old but hope you see it. My son was born deaf and got his hearing aids at 18 months. He wanted to talk so bad we brought him to a deaf school everyday that specialized in teach speech and context. He now signs, reads lips and talks (he is 28). His hearing is just about totally gone now. He is not eligible for an implant for medical reasons. Since he was 7-9 we have had people argue with us that he wasn't deaf. We would tell them to start a conversation and then either turn around or walk behind him and continue the conversation. When the conversation stopped, their reaction was usually.....holy s&%t he is deaf....Great Video.

    I'm always curious how their speech has been impacted down the road. It's been 8 years for this delightful woman. Has improved hearing allowed her speech to more closely resemble that of people with naturally normal hearing? That's not a knock on how she speaks in this video. I just wonder if, with the ability to now better mimic others, her speech didn't lose some of the markers of hearing loss?
