  • A 19th century Irish song (recital - 24 September 1982)
When goin' the road to sweet Athy, hurroo, hurroo
When goin' the road to sweet Athy, hurroo, hurroo
When goin' the road to sweet Athy
A stick in my hand and a drop in me eye
A doleful damsel I heard cry,
    Johnny we hardly knew ye.
With your drums and guns and guns and drums, hurroo, hurroo
With your drums and guns and guns and drums, hurroo, hurroo
With your drums and guns and guns and drums
    The enemy nearly slew ye,
O why did you run from me and the child
Faith, Johnny, we hardly knew ye.
Where are the eyes that looked so mild, hurroo, hurroo
Where are the eyes that looked so mild, hurroo, hurroo
Where are the eyes that looked so mild
When my heart you first beguiled,
Oh my darling dear, Ye look so queer,
Faith, Johnny, we hardly knew ye.
Where are the legs with which you run, hurroo, hurroo
Where are the legs with which you run, hurroo, hurroo
Where are the legs with which you run
When you went for to carry a gun?
O why did you run from me and the child
Faith, Johnny, we hardly knew ye.
I'm happy for to see you home, hurroo, hurroo
I'm happy for to see you home, hurroo, hurroo
I'm happy for to see you home
All from the island of Ceylon,
So low in flesh, so high in bone,
Faith, Johnny, I hardly know ye.

s a popular Irish traditional anti-war and anti-recruiting song. It is generally dated to the early 19th century, when Irish troops served the British East India Company. The original refers to the soldiers from Athy, County Kildare that fought in "Sulloon"
