Social Security Benefits

Many youth in Nebraska's foster care system receive monthly Social Security payments, either due to their own disability or their parents' disability or death. However, the majority of youth and their representatives do not know they have or are receiving these benefits due to a lack of notification, according to a 2021 NPR and Marshall Project report on this practice. In response, the Nebraska Legislature passed LB 1173 (2022) to increase protections and rights for youth in care receiving these benefits through increased transparency and juvenile court involvement.
