It's not helpful, it's terrible advise. Use the bank card and 'tap in' at the barrier and go on a SOUTHERN train for just £9.50 rather than £21.90!! More trains same journey time.
There's no need to buy a ticket if you have a contactless capable credit card (or other device supporting EMV contactless payments), just use it on the ticket gates even if open (or standalone readers where there are no ticket gates) at both ends of the journey.
Travelling from Singapore to London/Loverpool in December...and arriving in Gatwick. This video is a decision maker for us...saw videos of Southern and then your video. Just booked Gatwick Express. We're travelling with 5 large luggages, I don't think we can do it on Southern. Only think now is to decide to take the Circle line to Paddinton or take a London cab/Uber/Bolt coz of our large luggages.
It's not the best choice to go to London from Gatwick, there are more frequent southern services that go to Victoria (6tph) along the exact same tracks and are only two minutes slower. There are also Thameslink trains which do the journey in a similar time and are useful to go to places like London Bridge, the Tower of London, The Houses of Parliament, and the City of London. Do make sure to get one of the fast trains (only calling at east Croydon and then London bridge and London Blackfriars, City Thameslink bla bla bla) not one of the stopping trains at smaller stations like Merstham, Horley and Redhill on the way as these get overtaken by the fast trains
DO NOT BUY A PAPER TICKET. Just tap in with the contactless card at the barrier and go on the SOUTHERN train for less than half the price just £9.50 Same journey time many more trains
Very poor advise. It's not the fastest the Southern train is the same 30min journey time and there are six an hour vs two with Gatwick Express. Just miss one? What are you going to do? Stand around in the cold for half an hour while you wait and watch three Southern trains leave. GX is just a tourist trap for people that don't know better. Just tap in with contactless or oyster. £9.50.
I went on Gatwick Express few months. Absolutely terrible! - Poor seats, namely the infamous Ironing seats, - 1st Class with practically the same seats and a sheet - No trilley service - Poor connectivity (Only 1 power socket for every 2 seats). For an Airport Express operator, I would say this is ridiculously poor.
The Gatwick Express is a rip-off. It runs on the same rails as the regular, cheaper trains. Overtaking is impossible. So save money using the regular service. From London to Gatwick buy a ticket to 3 Bridges, the stop after Gatwick but get of at the airport. Saves money and is legal. The rail staff will complain when they realise you are wise to their scam but that's their problem not yours..
This video was so helpful. Thank you so much for posting it!

Muito obrigada! Foi útil.
Los trenes se pueden coger a cualquier hora o tiene que ser la hora que pone el billete? Gracias!!!
We're flying into Gatwick in March and plan on taking the Southern Line - cheaper and only a couple of minutes longer
ciao Devo andare Dall'aeroporto di Londra Gatwick a Portsmouth in treno mi puoi consigliare come fare?
Çok teşekkür ederim
Thameslink will get you to London Bridge a couple of minutes faster. For some people it may also be much more convenient.
Ah I did not know that, thanks for the info 🙂
@Mirtha517 Good suggestion, I will try that next time I am in London! 🙂

On weekdays the Gatwick Express will save only 4 minutes over the following Southern service.
