Callas beautiful and elegant as always... For those who said that her voice were damaged here.. Let me tell you a damaged voice can't do stuff like what you hear in this video. Out of shape I can agree with. Remember that the voice is a muscle and if you don't work it out regularly becomes lose and weak... bu it doesn't lose it's qualities. This is an example of what I just said. Callas will always be the prima donna of the opera. The one and only, The STUPENDA CALLAS! Rest in peace.
Those who really love the art were moved indeed by her performances in her prime, but can only imagine what it takes to be Maria Callas coming back to give this concert
She could have just mimed this, so telling are her movements and incredibly fluent facial expressions. Artists don't "decline", they just become more beautiful. These are artists whose like we shall never see again. Opera lovers knew this that day, and the rapturous looks on their faces says it all. Callas was the Muse of Art, and so she remains to this day!
PIPPO e MARIA!!! Leggenda e storia della musica lirica.... INDIMENTICABILI E UNICI.
Even in her bad days Callas is so much better than so many others are n their prime...Brava Maria immortal
yes Mr Balaskas! The Callas phenomenon is a collection of many wonderful things not just her voice even at the end!!!
She only did it to help a friend who's daughter had cancer! She was beautiful inside and out. RIP ultimate Diva. Nobody has equalled you yet....
To my ears she still had a gorgeous voice even in her later years.
Bravissima, Maria Callas...
I love her voice when singing AND when she speaks. I just love hearing her talk and sing xp
How can their be 24 "i d'ont like" when she did it painfully but entirely....how many of us go to work, feel bad and get back home...SHE made it, not perfectly, but in a very human and emotional way. Bravo !
Enjoy the moments that still flash of greatness! Think that 40 years after her death we are still fascinated! One of a kind inspiration!
La Divina Callas still alive in our heart not matter what ...Callas est le plus authentique Carmen que j`ai jamais entendu..Viva la Diva
And for the record, when she spreads her arms out and whales "Ah! Non, Turiddu, rimani, rimani ancora!" the tears were flowing down my face uncontrollably. That is a Stradivarius inside her throat-out of tune, slightly damaged-but it's still a Stradivarius. And those incredible gestures are a school of drama unto themselves.
Giuseppe amazing here. Callas did these concerts late in her career to help him out - I think this one one of those. No room for any haters here - two wonderful singers on show.
Callas' low notes are still wonderful too. If her life had been different I think she could have had such a long career carrying on in mezzo roles
Historico !
Marvelous- a true legend!! I have always wished we had a lot more of her on video....
Great footage of a great Diva. Although past her prime, she just have to sing one note and you know it's Callas...La Divina.
Callas and Sutherland are the greatest singers of all time. We'll never see the likes of them again.
Noone before and after had such a stage presence....Magnetic
O mio Babbino Caro! Or her beloved public...What a super great and super legendary Diva she is!
We'll never see the likes of her again, never!
They are BOTH still wonderful!!!
Thank you so much for sharing this fantastic and unique video clip of María Callas The Voice of the Centuty.
Paz!
I do notice a lot of non-prime Callas in this concert, but I would still have applauded and cheered her like if there was no tomorrow!
2 great singers past their prime, but magical anyway.
Callas - greatest star ... greatest voice ....
Belíssimo......incomparável......fantástico !
NEL CONCERTO DI TOKIO MARIA CANTA DECISAMENTE MEGLIO. LONDRA E' STATO UNO DEI PRIMI RECITAL TENUTI. ERA NERVOSA E INSICURA..E SI SENTE..NELLO SHOW DI TOKIO E' FELICE,RILASSATA E TENEVA NOTE ALTE..COME DI STEFANO DICEVA... CMQ SPETTACOLARE SEMPRE!!
Thanks a lot Konstantinos Paliatsaras
MARIA CALLAS THE BEST FOREVER. UNICA ! !!!!!!!!!!!!!
Callas will always be Callas! I don't care if her voice was out of shape (or damaged or old etc). I was listening to an interview of Natalie Dessay (one of the best opera singers of our century) and she said that Callas was her inspiration. As a matter of fact, i don't think that Callas was a singer at all... Callas is the opera, Callas IS the inspiration! Viva la diva!!!
I LOVE CALLAS SHE WAS A LADY SO ELEGANT AND WITH A BEAUTIFUL VOICE.
28 Idiots Dislike Maria Callas and Giuseppe Di Stefano! Are you better???
I agree with LaSerpentaCanta - singers are professionals. You don't have to be an architect to like or dislike a building and you don't have to be a singer to like or dislike a singer. As to why people dislike this video - while these singers are legends, they are way past their prime here and many people don't like how they sound here. Yet other people simply don't like opera at all. Then there are those who have never liked Callas who was a great artist, but whose voice some opera fans found harsh. People are different and have different taste.
SENCILLAMENTE EXCELENTE GRACIAS
CALLAS POR SIEMPRE!!!!!!
Beautiful!
I thought there were some glorious moments here! So captivating!
She belongs to the Story for ever
BRAVA tutti. Both were '' past prime'' as they say, but hey you gotta admit this was good ^_^
Watching her a story Pauline Viardot (sister of Maria Malibran) told. She went to see one of the last performances of Guiditta Pasta ( a soprano to whom Callas was probably closest...there are descriptions of her voice pointing to the same vocal qualities and defects of Callas) and beeing asked what she thaught, answered....Yes, it is a voice in ruins but like Leonardos Last Supper also in ruins it remains that it is still the most beautiful painting in the world. It is also true that her voice bettered with those concerts and when one listens to the Boston recital we nearly hear the gret Callas of the fifties. Maybe she was overdemanding, maybe she should have made a repertoire change...we will never know. There is a record of Ah, Perfido...done a few month before her passing away. Well it is the great Callas voice ready for a real come back. But as Tito Gobbi pointed out.....Callas lost her self confidence and that ultimately shortened her career. Callas for ever.
I listened to that recording of Ah, Perfido and was astounded at how much her voice had improved since all of the concerts
Like a broken Stradivarius...
But still a Stradivari...
I honestly don't believe the common belief that Maria's voice was "damaged". Certainly as a singer that I am, I notice that her voice was "changed" from the earlier recording BUT, she was almost 10 "damages." Let's not forget that age DOES affect the voice as it affects everything else. What is unfortunate is that most people didn't "grow up" with her. It's like seeing people after 10 years, noticing new wrinkles and think the person has been "damaged." No, I call that aging. That's Maria' case.
I believe that if Onassis hadn't died a few months after this tour ended, she would have continued singing. Her voice improved tremendously over the course of these concerts but his death changed everything for her, I suppose.
This is an endearing document about two peerless singer with great legends under their belts. Unfortunately, both of them painfully well past their prime. The arias seem to have been carefully selected and some toned down, so as not to expose their fragile tessiture beyond achievable limits. The Cavalleria duet is simply astonishingly sung, and I wonder what memories might have crossed the soprano's mind, as it was her debut rôle in Athens. One may choose to relish memories from these amazing singers from better, earlier years, when their voices were fresher. Kalogeropoulou, still a young woman in the early 70's, probably could have had a longer career, had she stuck to roles that better suited her voice and stayed away from the jet-set lifestyle. But that's another story...
verdaderamente emocionante, muy bueno.
I agree - she's like a broken Stradivarius...I still admire her very much ...
❤. ❤. ❤
She is DIVA of the century! She is from Hellas
I love her gown. I love the cape.
Única e irrepetible Callas. Siempre.
They sound better here than what I remember from their NYC concert in which DiStefano's high notes were totally shot and Callas' wobble was very apparent.
ET, OUI. ❤❤
This was her first comeback concert and she was very anxious, her last in Japan is waaay better
"Згадала баба, як дівкою була".., оплески поваги, по інерції колишній славі.
ELLA SIEMPRE TAN EXIGENTE CON ELLA MISMA. NO SE PORQUE SE REFIRIO A ESTA COMO SU MAS VERGONZOSA PRESENTACION. SO VOZ ESTA BIEN, CON UN COLOR MAS OSCURO EN LE MEDIO Y CON SUS PARTICULAR COLOCACION DEL AGUDO. MARIA SIEMPRE LO HIZO BIEN, AUN CUNADO HIZO SILENCIO. DESCANSE EN PAZ MAESTRA. Y USTED CARO PIPO DE IGUAL MANERA.
callas por siempre!
Very sad indeed. Her voice can hardly be recognized. Se has no breath support.
I will always admire Callas and respect her, but listening to this is truly devastating.
Magnificent ... happy memories
splendida ci manca
Viva la diva.
There is something so honest about both of their perfrormances that one forgets the flaws. But only if one is capable and willing to listen with one's heart. If you're one of those vicious opera queens who never made it to the Met stage but still think you should have and therefor have to trash everyone who did I strongly suggest you stuff your bitterness down with yet another nice piece of cream cake.
Brava!
Terminada...pero la amamos.
SI!
I'd like to make one more comment on Maria's supposed "damaged" voice. These video is valuable as we analyze the age progression in a singer. For Maria the high notes are "wobbly" as it should for given her age and repertoire she embarked on since the beginning of her career as well as the transition from "voce di petto" to "voce di testa." Maria's voice was still beautiful although problematic. Remember that this was a recital or a vocal Marathon. Enough with the supposed vocal "damage!"
Verdi, Don Carlos, Πράξη ΙΙ
Lalo, de Roi D'ys, Vainement ma bien Aimé
Poncinelli, La Gioconda, Suicidio
Bizet, Κάρμεν
Mascagni, Cavalliera Rusticana, Voi lo sapete
Mascagni, Cavalliera Rusticana, Tu qui Stanuzza
Puccini, O Babbino Caro
merci mr Paliatsaras, mille merci!!!
Very sad she had to retired so soon. She's born in 1923, so she's 49 here?
If only she did not lost all that weight, I think she would kept her remarkable voice at least 5 years longer.
Won't it have been fantastic if her Tosca's in the 1960's were sung with her 1950's voice?
I don't think her voice in this concert is that bad as some posters say. She certainly looks stunning!
This is a Lady in her twilight, the best ever stop fucking moning & listen to a classic
Afastada por Onassis dos palcos, Calas regressa. Será que a sua voz ainda é a mesma?
People commenting who did not hear her are saying absurd things.
What childish comments found their way into the posting of a wonderful evening. Keep to music and do us all a favor.
what part of the video is that part?
Giuseppe Di Stefano the master of Luciano Pavarotti
My mom.😇🫶🏾🦋🌷
oprostajni koncert u Londonu. Na zalost,La primadonna assoluta glasvno nije adekvatna, ali ni ovako, hendikepiranoj joj vreme i sve ostalo, nije uspelo da oduzme harizmaticnu uverljivost niti ogromnu dramaticnu izrazajnost, neuporedivu velicinu i svojstvenost. To majka vise ne radja!1
