Awesome skills at instruction that was definitely the best I've seen and totally easy to follow you and understand thanks a ton.... keep up the great content... I'm a huge fan of your channel... love those 40 techniques video and bass reviews are epic I especially liked the 5 string shootout
I've been playing bass for a few years and these are honestly some of the best lessons I've seen on RUclips. I'd love to see you get into more advanced techniques like double thumb in the future!
Kcducttaper1 Yeah I subscribe to Scott as well. I liked how Scott compared slapping to opening a door and using an elbow twist another good RUclips beginner slap tutorial is the one by josh fossgreen on bassbuzz
Victor Wooten gives a pretty great double thumb video if you want to check that out :) best of luck on your music journey. Double thumb is one of my favorite techniques for like a tremolo sound or fast triplets and stuff or incorporating it into my normal slapping
Yeah this is the most in depth lesson I have ever seen it even helped me clean up my technique for a more efficient and “in time” pop after a slap and I’ve looked around on RUclips for at least 10 years. It’s funny how the thumb for leverage tip is a complete game changer to overall technique.
What people call talent is just the result of pure hard work. Calling someone talented is almost an insult to the hard work that person has actually put into something.
Nate, the cameras make all the difference. You’re the first I’ve seen do this. Very nicely done! Keep up the excellent work! For superior teaching! 👍✌️
Nate’s channel is so cool bc you can’t really label it. It’s a review channel, a lesson channel, a cover channel and also kinda just Nate being a fucking virtuoso and everyone voluntarily choosing to be flexed on by him when clicking on his videos
I wish I would have gotten this lesson when I first learned slap bass. I could probably know how to double thumb by now. But this could definitely help my slap. Would love to see a video on two hand tapping!!
You should consider doing more of these type of things. I’m a terrible slapper and I learned things I never thought of (like the use of the resting hand for popping instead of my hand flying all over the place) I’d never think about that if it wasn’t for you. Thank you.
This is the best instructional video I've ever seen for slap bass. You literally start at the very beginning explaining such basic things that most others leave out and then you have to figure out those "tricks" way on down the road. This is truly brilliant.
The thumb resting on the upper string and serving as leverage for the pop is one of the things you hardly notice on your own, but once you do, it all suddenly makes a whole lot more sense. That was a great lesson.
So true. This concept with the "thumb follow through" technique is absolutely amazing but I don't think I've heard about it from other bass players. How come ?
Thanks Nate, It is great to see seasoned players handing down chops to the younger guy's. I would say that the best tip here is indeed the right hand wrist action from the elbow. I my day I had to play play play to get that slap down and even dry slap on my chest when no bass was handy.
Great lesson, clear instructions, and a perfect voice for teaching. I also love how you get into it and stankface even while playing a beginner groove lesson.
Literally all of the videos teaching slap bass has never worked for me, and it was always the slap part, and with this video, everything is clear for me on how to slap! I really thank you for clearing this up and I'm very appreciative of this video!
Mannnn this actually helped me cuz I though you were supposed to slap the string just toward the body itself, unlike u were doing. Thanks so much!! This will help a lot
Yesterday i bought my first bass wich is a squier jazz bass vintage modified 70 , this video will help me to star practicing slap, thanks for the lesson!
Had the pleasure of discovering Mr Nate last night at the Porcupine Tree show in Paris, and just now through these great instructional videos!! Amazing work! Thanks Nate!!!
I’ve been playing bass for years but recently started to learn to slap bass and this is the best video for that I have ever seen!!! I will start doing your thumb follow through technique before this video I was not allowing my thumb to follow through I would make my thumb bounce off the string but I could never get the clean sound that I always hear others making. This helped me a lot thank you!!!! God Bless you!!!
Hey, großartig. Endlich mal jemand, der ganz in Ruhe und langsam, nacheinander die Fingerabläufe erklärt. Ich bin begeistert. Thanks a lot Nathan and greetings from Düsseldorf/Germany, Tom PS. ... I'm still fascinated ans amused by your 40th technique, the "assisted chords" .... it's so sweet.^^
I'd like to add, the popping section was one of the most enlightening. I had experimented before with using the thumb as a rest, but most videos do not talk about this detail. Slap style requires such a demanding level of precision and control, especially at high tempos. Would love to see a video on muting bass concepts! Especially when sweeping, tapping, slapping, sometimes it's tricky muting that low E!!
Awesome videos Nathan, by the time lockdowns are over you would have started off some serious bassists. I’d love to see your process of writing a bass line!
I've always done slapping a bit differently from this. I learnt from a Flea instructional video so instead of pushing my thumb through the string, I sort of strike it with the joint of my thumb. Also instead of popping my hand, I sort of keep my fingers still and pull my hand away in the exact opposite motion used to slap
man! ive been playing years and hit a wall. i can see why, i have so many bad habits ive seen from watching your videos. Relearning the bass pretty much haha
I love how you’re using the affordable Harley Benton, and getting a great tone. I have just this week bought the same enhanced series bass but with the p pick up after seeing yours and other RUclips video reviewing these basses. This is an amazing bass and I have found it perfect for starting to learn slap after playing many more expensive basses for around 25 years. This video has helped me immensely, thank you so much. It would be great to see more vids with some more basic grooves and licks. Take care and keep doing what you’re doing 🤘
I don't think you'll see this but, this is a great tutorial, I'll not stop until I do this clear. Other thing: The bridge mic, did you put it ? Or it comes with the bass ? I wanna do the same modification.
Great stuff as always, Nathan! Definitely gonna come back to this video to try and improve my slap technique! If I may make a suggestion - I reckon you should do a video on how bassists can improve their technique and get them out of a 1 technique rump. As much as I'd be suggesting this for personal gain - I know there's a lot of bassists out there that have the same struggles I do because we were either taught one way or didn't know any better...
Been following you for a long time. I bought a few source audio pedals because I love the sound you got out of them. I like the Mario game play through...lol The songs you played with Devin Townsend were awesome. Your a very talented bassist. Glad you are getting the recognition you are getting now. Good luck on all your projects. ✌🏻
I couldn't get the slap and pop in any way, and these things came to me naturally way before you made the video, especially the anchor for the pop. Some people that teach slapping say that the thumb must bounce off the string instead of going to rest on the string below. I'm wondering if this way of slapping is the right one and if it has downsides, or is it the classic way to slap
I find that most players slap in this position because 1) it’s closest to the point of contact for each string (the last two frets) and 2) it produces great tone. You can slap wherever you like though. I’ll sometimes slap closer to the bridge for a different tone.
20 years ago...one of my "scares" was going to "the mighty 5 string"..lol. For anyone who is "scared" of 5. Go for it...its not that much different. A week or two..you be fine..
Nice video! I play a Condor bx12. His neck and headstock are too heavy for the body, so it hangs to the left if I don't hold the body with my forearm, and it's very annoying, because I always got to hold the neck with my left hand, and that throws away my playing. Have you got some tip?

He's a world class bassist but his true talent lies in teaching.
Robert Johnson this is hands down the best slap bass lesson I have seen on RUclips
I couldn't agree more completely easy to watch and understand thanks Nathan

No words to tell about him
What people call talent is just the result of pure hard work. Calling someone talented is almost an insult to the hard work that person has actually put into something.
His voice sounds like one of those voice overs they use in instructional videos they'd play at a job orientation.
Mr Nathan, you can't even imagine how helpful this was. Those different camera angles where so incredibly helpful. Thank you SO much.
Agree!!!
This is the first video I've seen that shows slapping through the string verses just slapping into a string. It works so much better!
Nate, the cameras make all the difference. You’re the first I’ve seen do this. Very nicely done! Keep up the excellent work! For superior teaching! 👍✌️
Damn..
This is the most awesome lesson EVER.
Remember to SLAPP LIKE AND SUBSCRIBE, slappers.
Nathan deserves it.

Very great and remarkable demonstration of the slap and pop, wonderful teaching, tonnes of information in a short span.. Bravo..

Same...
Yesterday i bought my first bass wich is a squier jazz bass vintage modified 70 , this video will help me to star practicing slap, thanks for the lesson!
Thank you, Nathan!
I'm almost in disbelief that you did this. This video is so incredibly helpful!
Had the pleasure of discovering Mr Nate last night at the Porcupine Tree show in Paris, and just now through these great instructional videos!! Amazing work! Thanks Nate!!!
This is the best slap teaching video I have ever found. Thank you!!
Love your voice, Nathan! Calm, bright, confident. And very informative instructions, many thanks!
One of the best slap lessons I’ve seen
If you ever stop playing bass, you should be the voice of some TV add's heheheheheheee,.....
Excited for more of your instructional video like this. This is gold!❤
Every lesson from you it's like gold. You're amazingly insane.
I’ve been playing bass for years but recently started to learn to slap bass and this is the best video for that I have ever seen!!! I've been unsure about slap bass but watching this video makes me want to give it another try :)
The way you explained, track to play with!! Love the camera angle!!! Best part. Remind me of 80s VCR Instructional video.
just got your book and the corresponding video lessons to go along with them are just.. wow. what an amazing resource for an aspiring bassist
Awesome, thank you!
this actually helped me out to improve my slap
technique thank you.
Definitly one of the best slap tutorial nowadays, much thanks and congrats
Great Navarro! one ☝️ best modern bass player ever! I hope 🤞 sweep lessons 😬
Amilcar R.S yes sweep lesson please! Not like I don’t fully know how. Just asking for a friend. Jk I just need pointers
Just started my basic slapping lesson from you . Hope to rock the stage soon🤟🏻
Just bought the book, and although I've been playing for a good while, coming back to basics really helps sometimes. Great content!
Tant de générosité pour transmettre le savoir, merci. C'est la meilleur video sur la technique de slap
Nate, this is great. Thanks for going into these details.
Thank you so much for this great lesson I was able to start correcting mistakes with practicing these fundamentals
Hey, großartig. Endlich mal jemand, der ganz in Ruhe und langsam, nacheinander die Fingerabläufe erklärt. Ich bin begeistert. Thanks a lot Nathan and greetings from Düsseldorf/Germany, Tom
PS. ... I'm still fascinated ans amused by your 40th technique, the "assisted chords" .... it's so sweet.^^
Ah yes, world renowned serial killer and bass virtuoso Nate Navarro.
Straight love your videos mate
LOVING these videos!! Thanks for giving us lessons to work on during quarantine. 😄

Dude, you are everything I imagined in a teacher. Great lesson!! This channel should have WAAY more views
Amazing tutorial, many thanks
Hey Nathan, i really like your lessons. I will support you and using your guitar tabs, thanks!
A grea lesson , and to succeed need some time! Practice ,practice ,practice.
You sound like you're reading a script from How Its Made and it makes it really nice
Awesome videos Nathan, by the time lockdowns are over you would have started off some serious bassists.
I’d love to see your process of writing a bass line!
Thanks indeed, this method worked for me.
This lesson is so good 🔥🔥🔥
A good lesson for beginers👍👍
Love it!
Thank you!
Trying to learn how to play bass on my own.
Nice lesson, love the bass. Got the same one in blue colour. Excellent work as always:)
I've always done slapping a bit differently from this. I learnt from a Flea instructional video so instead of pushing my thumb through the string, I sort of strike it with the joint of my thumb. Also instead of popping my hand, I sort of keep my fingers still and pull my hand away in the exact opposite motion used to slap
same i have to relearn how but i think its more efficient his way
This lesson slaps hard
man! ive been playing years and hit a wall. i can see why, i have so many bad habits ive seen from watching your videos. Relearning the bass pretty much haha
Good to see you again! Great lesson too. Long time fan. Keep up the great work.

How much does this bass cost ?
great lesson thanks!
Great stuff Nathan that was easy to follow
never heard this guy's voice before
and then he spoke
me : oh yeah this guy's literally a bass
I giggled
Thanks for this, I’m gonna be getting my first bass when this stupid Coronavirus thing ends. I’ll make sure to come back to this when I get my bass.
Thank you brother
Thanks Nathan, you rock ; )
Ты просто лучший!!!! Спасибо за урок!!!!!
I don't think you'll see this but, this is a great tutorial, I'll not stop until I do this clear.
Other thing: The bridge mic, did you put it ? Or it comes with the bass ? I wanna do the same modification.
Muting is the most important tehnique every bassist need to master!
Very helpful, thank you very much.
Great stuff as always, Nathan!
Definitely gonna come back to this video to try and improve my slap technique!

Awesome dude, you’re the best!
Such a good video bro. It helped me improve on slap bass, thanks! :B
Thanks! The Best video lesson! )
Jazz hands baby!!!!!
This lesson is awesome :D
COOOL VIDEO!!!!!!!!!
You can't have a chiselled jaw line, sick ass bass riffs and a velvety voice all in one.
Very good man, You are the best
Thank you
Nice slap lesson , I will be watching this again after I earn for bass amp 😁
Great Job, bro! 🤟🏾
Thank you ❤️
Wow. You've got a nice voice
Done!
Thanks

Please do a beginners video for tapping!
Hi Nathan, thanks for that lesson!
Do you have a recommendation how to improve the accuracy of hitting the strings with the thumb?
This was super helpful, thanks! (I'm really just a drummer trying his best 😂)
damn deep voice, very good tutorial tho
Bass sound is more cooler than guitar I don’t why
Because bass is best
I see you slap mostly above the neck . Is this recommended or it's your way to do it?
I find that most players slap in this position because 1) it’s closest to the point of contact for each string (the last two frets) and 2) it produces great tone. You can slap wherever you like though. I’ll sometimes slap closer to the bridge for a different tone.
O M G !!
thank you
please teach double thumb technique
What a great lesson!! lol
