  • PART 1 of a 3-part series based on the award-winning book, "Scarred by Struggle, Transformed by Hope." Internationally known writer, lecturer and peace activist, Sr. Joan Chittister, tells about her deep struggle as a young nun to reconcile her dream of studying at America's premier creative writing program to become a fiction writer -- a dream that seemed within her grasp -- only to be told she was to be third cook at a children's summer camp instead.

Our dear Tom Hogan....has another year on the planet eroded your rough edges into some semblance of Christian charity? Some of your 'heretic loons' seem the brightest lights in the universes of those not so graced with rigid, hard-headed clarity and certainty. May we all be blessed by the unlearning required for our freedom and growth.

Those that promise us the easy life are our enemy.

very eloquent and I do love you, Sister Joan; however, I beg to differ here. While one can make the best of struggle, there is more to choose from life. We needn't accept struggle though it often comes our way. On one level it seems you bought into the "forced change" because you had to do what the prioress said. Others may have said forget it -- this is my dream and I'm going with it, and left the convent. Neither choice being right or wrong, just that there is always choice.
