Geebz, you have to do more off this album. The whole album from beginning to end is a journey. It's well worth the 45mins to immerse yourself in this work of art.
It's a nice surprise to see someone react to VAST/Jon Crosby, but especially when it's someone who can comment on the complexity of his music. Such an underrated artist, and incredibly talented. His softer tracks (You, Evil Little Girl, Blue) are some of the most beautiful, ethereal songs I've ever heard. I often think that if the music of the spheres really is a thing and sounds resonate with our souls, VAST would be it for me.
I love Vast. This album was so good. HERE has always been one of my favorite tracks off this album. TOUCHED was the only radio hit at the time of this album coming out. He wrote it when he was like 16 too. Jon would perform live using a laptop basically too. This whole album rocks I hope you've since listened to the whole thing!
'Touched' blew my mind in the late 90's (please do a reaction to that song! 🙏). Bought the album after hearing it once and 'Here' opened the album. By the time it finished, I was already on the phone to friends telling them to buy this album.
I had a friend working in a CD store in the late 90's hide a VAST promo poster for me, was a glow in the dark hieroglyphic version of the VAST lettering, so cool
Been listening to VAST for 20+ years… love it. This is the perfect album to light up a joint, lie down in the dark and soak it in from start to finish. All of Jon Crosbys work is amazing! Best listened to in chronological order. ✌️🖤🤘
I don't know if I've ever seen anyone react to VAST! My introduction to them was a good 12 years ago, to a song called "Don't Take Your Love Away From Me". Agree with the Reznor comparision, too.
Love VAST! VAST is a solo project. Jon Crosby does everything himself with the exception of having touring musicians for live shows. The song Here is a deep cut. I recommend That's My Boy, Touched, Free or for a piano ballad, Don't Take Your Love Away.
I first heard this track on a promo for the TV series Angel in the summer of '99. Bought the CD that same week, loved it back to back! Still wish I could shake the hand of whoever chose it for that promo video - SUPER fitting sounds for a paranormally inclined turn of the millennium LA noir thing. Love from Philly!
VAST is just Jon Crosby. He is a virtuoso in terms of soundscape and production. He plays every instrument and writes and produces it himself. This whole album is a trip and definitely was a favorite of mine in my early 20’s. I haven’t seen a reaction channel do a song from him before. Good for you to discover something so cool.
The first single I heard from VAST was “Pretty When You Cry” and it resonated with the NIN angst of the moment … but legacy shows “Touched” as the song that gained popularity from this 1st album … I find “DirtyHole” and “ThreeDoors” to be gems from this album …. I enjoy the 2004 album Nude and the song “Lost” is a good one to sample from that …strong album all around. I think VAST is what NewOrleans Trent Reznor meets Manhattan Moby would sound like after many many years of dating … with the band Placebo being a possible love child of the era …😊
Oh man! Never seen anyone do a VAST song. This is a foundational “band” for me in my musical journey, part of the second wave of artists I really sunk into when diving into music fandom in earnest. Thanks Geebz and everyone who suggested this!
Buddy, I effing love VAST. This particular '98 album is probably the heaviest of Jon Crosby's career. Afterward, the music moved towards a softer sound and for me that is where things get interesting. I'd highly recommend the track "Blue" from the album _Music For People_ which is the album after _Visual Audio Sensory Theater_ to hear the progression. But anyway, I have fond memories of listening to the _Turquoise & Crimson_ albums while driving to work pre-dawn. It's like a mash of alt/folk/rock/triphop. Chill stuff.
Agreed on all of this. Oddly enough, his Generica folk project is something I come back to way more often than these early albums. He did about 6 "albums" with some repeating songs in various stages of production - some totally acoustic, some more produced, some live - and I just love the atmosphere of those releases.
The big feature on VAST's early industrial-rock albums was the use of samples from tribal chants & cultural hymns. 'Touched' samples a Bulgarian women's choir and Tibetan Buddhist monks, 'Somewhere Else to Be' has Benedictine chanting, and 'Dirty Hole' features a Mississippi prison chain gang. They've since veered away from that style, but it added a lot of texture to their early material.
"My TV and You". The Wife walked down the aisle to "Lady of Dreams" at our wedding. Those first two albums are wonderful. Definitely worth checking out "Touched", at the very least. 8)>
One of my favorites from back in High School, if you get a chance to listen to another track from this album I suggest "Flames" for some great strings.
Geebz! My wife LOVES VAST…this was fun to watch with her😉 Great band…lots of solid music. Jon Crosby is the mastermind behind the music. The Trent Reznor comparison is valid for sure. Crosby was a young guitar prodigy. He’s done several albums as both VAST and his own name. Worth a slow burn, or at least a deep dive!
This entire album is so good!! - and if I recall correctly, entirely composed of just One Guy (I could be wrong, it's been at least 20 years for me since I discovered VAST). The song "Desert Garden" while minimalistic, will still make me cry. It's just so raw!! The song that really drew me in though was "Dirty Hole" - so fun to sing along with, and it wasn't until years later that I really paid attention to the lyrics and Oh My!!! ** This is probably my 5th edit on this comment haha, but because it just sort of 'took me back' would be awesome if you gave Poets of the Fall a listen! "Carnival of Rust" is probably one of the more popular, but "Sleep" or "All the way 4 U" (there is a live version, though the studio version is just as moving) are just as great! Another band that is so underrated!
I usually don't care to watch reaction videos, but because this is for VAST, which I wouldn't think they'd ever get a reaction video, I had to watch. You're a real one for this!
Joining the chorus of people who'd love to see your reaction to "Touched" off the same album. I can't remember when I first heard it (probably early 00s), but man, it always hits in a very special way for me. :)
Thank you so much for this, I loved this album so much. Touched, DIrty Hole ... I remember alternating listening to it and Utah Saints TWO almost on repeat for months back in the day
FINALLY! Well done Jeebz! 1st time i think i've seen a reaction video to the wonderful VAST. 1st & 2nd Albums are absolutely superb. Saw them Live in London a few times, 1st time around in 2000 @ ULU, dispensed with all the samples & synths & stuff, just rockin' out as a 4 piece.
I remember being in Sid’s music in Hebden Bridge in West Yorkshire back in 1998 having just ordered the full King’s X and Living Colour catalogues on cd. Asked Sid if he could recommend something new. He played this! Hadn’t even been released yet. Bought it straight away. Hooked off the bat and still give this great project regular listens now. Jon Crosby is an amazing all round musician 🙌🫶👏👏👏🤘
VAST! Haven't heard any interest in Jon-boy in years. Nice find. Like others said, Touched & Pretty When You Cry are also highlights from that first album, but yeah, I really liked the whole thing.
Hello from New England... I'm getting strong Marilyn Manson/NiN feel.... nice chorus...this sounds really good...thx Geebz for turning me onto a band I might not have come across... Peace from the Northeast.🤘✌️
I like this song but I dig Thrown Away and Touched, they both are in my «staylist». I recommend a slow burn reactipn on this band ! Really nice vid, you did a good job, thank you ! 💪🏻😉
When that electronic, heavier tone dropped at the beginning, it really reminded me of Rob Zombie with his heavy, theatric style. I can see the Trent influence in it, too. Pretty good track! Not what I was expecting from that softer beginning.
Deep cut here, oddly enough I saw them open up for Queens of the Stone Age. I always felt this cut and album felt ‘cinematic’. The Trent Reznor vibe is pretty spot on, this was when the labels were still looking for the next NIN. I also felt this album had a nit of influence from Enigma and other Artists of that ilk. And I’ll ask again, please do Helmet “Unsung”
Oh wow was not expecting this - I love this album! Hope you enjoyed it. Please do Touched and Pretty When You Cry from the same record. Have a great day Geebz!
Cool to see this pop up! I thought this kind of thing was the future of music back in the late 90's. In my opinion, the best song on the album is Touched. I'd love to see you cover that if you ever get back around to this artist. Definitely pulling from the same vocabulary as industrial bands like Nine Inch Nails or Gravity Kills. Enjoyed the video!
VAST isnt a new band. He’s been releasing music since the 1990s. One of my favorites. He had a strong start with his first two albums in the 90s (this song is from his first album) but he fell off a cliff commercially. He didnt stop making mysic and has put out multiple albums and EPs over the past 20 years. He records out of a home studio and a lot of it is CDR based but there are some pressed CDs mixed in.
I got this record based entirely on the strength of I’m Dying which was on an Ozzfest sampler cd. I’m thinking 1999? Great song, fantastic album. I’ve never met another person IRL who has heard of this guy so this is a treat.
I'd say it's been at least 2 months since your ears were, blessed with some first fragment. So to rectify the situation I recommend a track by the name of in'el.... 🤟🤘✌️
Thanks for your excellent analysis and insightful commentary. Your videos are very educational through your provision of formal musical terminologies and theoretical practices that better allow your viewers to understand the intricacies involved in these works of art. P.S. Please could you react to Vast Touched 🙏
I guess im imagining, but I thought you’d done one on Patreon. The dude made fascinating music as a whole. This album had some moments but the next one had an orchestra on it. I know he wasnt the biggest thing in his era but it was consistently good music.
Thanks Geebz. I never heard this band before and I liked it. I got a NIN vibe but also the band Cop Shoot Cop. I’d love for you to do something from Cop Shoot Cop’s album Release. 😊
I've long maintained that the opening in Surprise, Surprise from Ask Questions Later is one of the best starts to any album ever. Within the first 10 seconds, you know exactly what you're about to experience. With Cop Shoot Cop having 2 bassists, no real guitarist, and a drumkit that uses a bunch of found metal, how could you possibly go wrong? If we're throwing out our wishlists (and we aren't, because that's what Patreon is for), I'm going to have to add Pop Will Eat Itself - maybe a song like Kick to Kill or Menofearthereaper. Or we could open a massive can of worms with Front 242 and do something like Masterhit Part I & II, Modern Angel, or Tragedy ▷For You◁.
Can you react to the new Sleep Token singles that dropped? Nik, Metal Birb and Hard Core all reacted already but I would love to see your take on it. Chokehold and The Summoning.
Howzit Geebz, have you gotten many suggestions for Byzantine? I'm pretty sure there have been a few, check out Byzantine's song "Justinian Code", it's an epic song! Byzantine is a Progressive Groove Metal band, I discovered them 2 months ago and I swear they are one of the best bands I've ever heard in my entire life!! Give Byzantine a listen sometime, have a great day Geebz! 🤘🤘🤙🤙
@@KeyOfGeebz awesome Geebz, thank you! I'll send you a message about it on Patreon, they have a 2 part song I'd like to request if it's possible to do so. I suggested "Justinian Code" because it's Byzantine's most popular song and I've seen others suggest it. Ps: Are we still on for the Bloodmores song? Hope you had a great New Years Geebz!
It wasn't really a band on the first record if I remember correctly, just one guy doing it all. Became a band later, though. I love Touched. And I listened to Music For People A LOT back in the day.
Wow, VAST, I definitely wouldn't have expected to see them pop up. Love this band.
Vast's been my fav since the early 2000s. Glad to see it on here. Jon is a very talented musician.
I got Jon Crosby's autograph at a show nearly 20 years... then got it tattooed on my thigh. He's really a great guy!
From what I know, Jon Crosby did this whole album by himself. He played all the instruments, and did all the compositions.
In his teens
I'd recommend Touched more than Here as far as their tracks from that album. But the whole album is definitely worth a listen.
Yea, Touched is so good. My friend used it in a skate video back in the day, and it fit so perfect.
Good call, I've always loved the building/layering of Pretty When You Cry as well.
Great song. The whole album is great
@@mehkayla6685 Ironically I learned about VAST from their song "temptation" being in a 411 skate video
The whole album would be great
This is awesome that someone is doing a reaction to Vast.
I absolutely love Vast
Geebz, you have to do more off this album. The whole album from beginning to end is a journey. It's well worth the 45mins to immerse yourself in this work of art.
I seriously thought me and 12 other people bought this CD back in the day. This is awesome
Touched at least got some pretty serious radio play on 89x here in Detroit back in the day … back when 89 still existed.
And we wore it the fuck out!
I saw him live 😍😍😍
I was one of them. God I love this album.
I've loved VAST for so long and was always a bit sad that they're underrated. I'm so glad you shared your experience listening to them. Thank you

One of my very favorite bands and songs. Vast is so underrated.
I love Vast. This album was so good. HERE has always been one of my favorite tracks off this album.

Same! This song was a game-changer for me! They're so fantastic and underrated!
That was the same thought I had! First time I’ve seen anyone react. Woo!
A real nice surprise this! Saw these guys play a small venue show back in the day. Still one of the best and 'heaviest' bands I've seen. Fantastic!
Same introduction to them for me as well, first heard it on Smallville. They also used "One More Day", although that is a much slower song.
