  • In West Bengal, there is a prevalent narrative that #shrikrishna #Rama has nothing to do with Bengal. But in reality, there lies a great reverence for Prabhu Shri Rama across the state.
The great saint # Shri Ramkrishna Paramahansa# (guru of Swami Vivekanand) was named after Shri Rama and Shri Krishna, both Avatara of Shri Vishnu.
The famous chant, ‘Hare Rama, Hare Krishna,’ which is the slogan of the ISCKON movement today, was popularised by 15th C Bengali Hindu saint Chaintanya Mahaprabhu.
Furthermore, there are many monikers associated with Shri Rama which are taught to children in every Bengali home. For example: “Bhoot amaar poot, petni amaar jhi, Ram Lakhan amaar saathe aache, korbe amaay ki” - It roughly translates to ghosts and witches are under my feet, when Rama and Lakshamana are with me, what can they do to me? This suggests that a deep reverence for Shri Rama is entrenched in the Bengali culture and history since ages.
