    I’m a socialist. I sat down and figured out how a flat tax could possibly work.
    It takes about thirty years to get to the point where it could work, but it requires some pretty heavy-handed taxing between now and then. Eliminate the marginal rates entirely at the start and tax 20% up to $20k per year income & increase the tax rate by 10% at $50k, $100k, $250k, $500k and $1 million. That would make $1 million per year income would pay 70% in taxes. Remove the top rate every five years, resulting in a flat 20% in thirty years.
    Capital gains taxes should be replaced by a 5% sales tax on financial instruments (stocks, bonds and debt sold as annuities). That would mean a single $1 trillion trading day on Wall Street would generate $50 billion in revenue. That would eliminate the need for IRS agents to examine tax filings for people who own stock, because the tax would be at the point of sale for the buyer.
    Set a progressive maximum wage instead of screwing around with minimum wage laws. If the top wage that is deductible from payroll can only be 100:1 compared to the lowest wage of a company, the CEO’s $25 million salary would require the lowest-paid employee to earn $250k per year to be deductible.
    Prize taxes should be eliminated, because that is income. Gift taxes should be eliminated, because that is income.
    Estate taxes should be 100% on anything requiring legal documentation to prove ownership. Your grandmother’s silverware would be exempt, but you would have to take out a mortgage to keep her house, car or stock portfolio. That stops corporate empires from being inherited. Share of stock coming into government ownership that way would go into the Social Security Hedge Fund to help fund Social Security restructuring.
    Corporate bailouts should include a transfer of voting stock at current market value for the bailout funds. That would mean stock buybacks after receiving a bailout may just nationalize the company. Those shares would likewise go into the Social Security Hedge Fund.
    A Basic Income, paid through a restructured Social Security Administration of $400 per week to every citizen would guarantee that every citizen paid an income tax. Your social security number would be your account number at a Social Security Administration Bank. By 48 years old, more than $1 million would have been deposited in your account. Just the 20% income tax on that $400 per week would generate $1.4 trillion in revenue annually.
    And that is just the tax portions of it. The ending of FICA deductions would increase paychecks by 7% annually before taxes. The FICA refund at the beginning of a basic Income would see a huge boost in the economy right away.
    You have to create a credit-based economy instead of a debt-based economy in order to have a flat tax. Strengthen the consumer base and the GDP will soar.
    Now ask me how to fix healthcare and housing costs.

  • @georgeh6856
    @georgeh6856 9 месяцев назад +2

    Here is the problem with right wing economics. They had a great idea when the top tax rates were over 90%. Cut the tax as it was hurting economic growth. They did and Thatcher and Regan won big. Tax rates are not hurting growth anymore, but the right has no other ideas. Cutting taxes just increases deficits and they can't cut spending because of political reasons. So they have nothing to offer except for the fading memories of 19 for you and 1 for me...

    Just need a property tax. Every other tax is regressive and just a pass through to customers, employees, or shareholders.

  • @Roxor128
    @Roxor128 9 месяцев назад

    There's a really simple patch for a flat tax to fix the regressiveness: a fixed-size rebate for all.
    If the rebate is 50% of GDP Per Capita and the tax rate 50%, then anyone making exactly GDP Per Capita will get just as much in rebate as they pay in tax, for a net rate of zero. If they make more, the rebate is less than what they pay, and if they make less, it's more than what they're paying. Someone with zero income will end up getting 50% of GDP Per Capita overall, effectively setting a minimum after-tax income.

  • @katherinemcintosh7247

    Here’s the problem I see with tax rates AND minimum wage rates…
    Because we most often have inflation, naming a specific amount for anything in either of these categories has to be discussed and increased (or not,) every so often.
    Here’s a thought:
    base minimum wage on a multiple percentage of the poverty rate.
    You want to make a flat tax? Exempt people who have an income lower than what a person would make working full time at a minimum wage rate as figured above.
    Prices do not stay the same. They are constantly fluctuating. Why in the hell does ANYONE think that saying, “You won’t have to do this if you make $50k or less…blah, blah, blah…” is reasonable long term? Why can we not fix these things LONG term?!?
