Good video. I currently have the Warbonnet XLC and love it. I started hearing so many good things about the Chamelion that I was wondering what I was missing and thinking about buying one to see. Your video saved me $200, because the few advantages are things that are of limited or no importance to me. BTW, with the latest version of the XLC, you can buy the winter cover later. You no longer have to buy it at the same time as the hammock
You mentioned that the short, dangling outer ribbon strip on the XLC is for the Wooki UQ (how?), but isn’t it intended to be used just for tying up the bug net when it’s unzipped along one side and rolled back out of the way?
I just ordered the xlc. I guess they've done some updates and I definitely like things about both of them but the xlc just has a lot less fuss and I started with an eno system and I still had much better sleep than a tent and upgrading is just for a few more conveniences and I wanted my gf to have a set up with the eno
Some other "major" differences include the new beetle buckle bling and straps. You can customize the Chameleon with the pole to hang two hammocks together on just two trees. Dutch also offers a bugnet called the "Double Dutch to cover two hammocks now on the site. :)
Great video, I've been looking at both of these for awhile now, do you notice any calve ridge in either one? My current hammock is terrible for a calve ridge down the middle. Nice shirt, I have the same one.
I don't recall it mentioned but the newest XLC now has a zippered exit on the footbox side. Additionally, I saw a video that showed that if the bugnet is turned completely over and reattached the lay is reversed. Please advise if this is misstated. Note: I don't think I'd ever remove a bugnet. In cooler temps it holds in heat. That and I like my WB winter sock that can be closed completely if needed and over the bugnet. I'd freeze in the Cameleon as the top cover has way too much mesh. I understand the need for ventilation but this goes too far IMHO.
Great comparison. I might have to grab one! I love my WBBB XLC too. Been using it for few years and never wanted anything else. I got an Amok Draumr 3.0 for my birthday and have to say I love it just as much! The Dutch chameleon looks interesting.
SBOutdoors Well that's a hard question. I don't really compare them as they are both completely different from each other. Personally I like using the Draumr and been using it often. I should do a side by side comparison video. The XLC has been my go to hammock so don't think either one could replace the other. The attention to detail on the Amok is top class. So I like both of them but the Draumr is quickly becoming my favorite. Hope that helps.
What kind of suspension systems do you guys prefer? My WBBB uses whoopie slings but the chameleon doesn't offer that as an option. I like use the tree straps with toggles and a marlin hitch knot.
The beetle (cinch) buckle I think might get you a little more versatility, but I think the whoopie slings are easier to deal with, and a little bit lighter. We loved the whoopies on our WBBB.
The Hexon 1.0 material is much more comfortable (for us) than the WBBB 1.7. It will depend on your weight range. NOW if there was a WBBB in Hexon 1.0, I'm not sure what the difference would be, but for now we find the chameleon (mainly because of the fabric) much more comfortable.
edit: Dutch's Chameleon is a gathered end hammock, not Asym so no footbox, but you can lay in one of 5 positions. This hammock is very modular as Dutch is coming up with new accessories to accommodate his fanbase.
Although the fabric length is 11', the hammock's ridgeline should shorten the overall length of the hammock to about 10'. So you'll be fine under an 11' tarp.
As of today's Black Friday, the complete Chameleon is only $100. If I was on the fence before, isn't this kind of a no-brainer? dutchwaregear.com/product/chameleon-hammock/#suspension
Does it bother anyone else that Warbonnet has a logo of a Native American with a Native American head dress and it's owned by a white man? I bought an underquilt from this company and when I saw the logo I had to send it back and they changed me a 20% restocking fee but I could not stomach the cultural appropriation by this company.
Nope, doesn't bother me at all. And it didn't bother you at the time you ordered it, or you wouldn't also be complaining about the restocking fee. Go stir the pot elsewhere. Hammocks are about relaxing, not drumming up stupid drama.
As of 2020 you can buy the winter topcover separately for the warbonnet blackbird XLC (and Eldorado). Also you can change lay direction now.

My only "irke", if I have this correct, is that the WBBb comes with a bug net and the Cameleon bug net, is an "option" on purchase.
Yeah I thought that was pretty lame and nickle-dimey - and for a 200$ product the fact that they charge shipping is a bit off-putting.
Sorry - dumb question here! What is a "double layer" and why is it required to use with a pad?
They're exactly the same, yet totally different!
Great comparison.

How does the XLC compare to the Draumr? Those things have always interested me.

Great video. Thanks for taking the time to explain this. I've been going to both companies for years.
Maybe it's just me, but it looks like the War bonnet is roomier in the shoulders than the Chameleon. Is the Chameleon more cacoon like?
Voo I noticed that too.

Witch hammock gives you a flatter lay black bird or chameleon
i would like to see this again but with the new XLC
I have the new xlc its crazy comfortable but for long trails i prefer the halfwit hammock almost the same comfort for almost a pound lighter
Sorry, if I missed it, but I did not hear you say anything about comfort of the two you are comparing? Can you comment on that?

Can thoes ridgeline lofts be hooked up on either end...foot or the head?

Good Review! I use the Warbonnet Blackbird and Dutchware Half-Wit hammocks. I'm debating between a Chameleon or Dream Hammock for my next one.
We really want to get our hands on a dream hammock...
I'm 6ft 325lbs senior, any suggestions? any thoughts on the kammock roo?
At your weight the double layer WB
XLC in the heaviest material should handle you easily
Helpful, thx!
Dutch just released the double layer Chameleon.
That is awesome. Last time out in mine the bugs rocked us :(
SBOutdoors do some research on the effectiveness of two layers preventing/deflecting bugs biting through.... you'll find that that's a myth.
Warbonnet has a new XLC version by now, allowing to reverse the lay, and ordering a winter top later on.
Did you guys see Dutch has the new side car attachment?? Almost like the shelf
JUST PURCHASED
SBOutdoors I'm on the fence. I will await your video review. Did you guys and frozen reschedule your trip??
I see a clippers shirt. I guess you guys are.
Yep! Go Bucks
Question for you. Yesterday I ordered a 11' tarp. Is that going to be to small for this 11' hammock? Go Bucks!
Although the fabric length is 11', the hammock's ridgeline should shorten the overall length of the hammock to about 10'. So you'll be fine under an 11' tarp.
Alex Banks 11 ft tarp will be just fine. When you are in the hammock the length is much less than 11 ft.
I actually picked up the tarp today. I got the 12' so I'll have some extra space. Thanks

😂 This comment has been on almost every Warbonnet video I've watched recently, you are on a mission.
