Will do!!
Nice bluffing in that win. Loved that spy bluff.
I guess I got a little bit lucky the way it turned out. That Spy bluff really made the miner look like it could be my Marshal and allowed me to get into position to open up a possible bombed in flag. I bet he never thought it was a miner until I hit his bomb. I could have played a swap game against him with my 2 lieutenants and 1 sergeant advantage over his Colonel and won because I had a strong feeling where his unknown colonel was located. But I was worried he could lotto my setup and get lots of pieces with his colonel. I thought playing the stats where the flag was located and using the miner bluff was a better way to go. Glad he didn't have a double vertical bombs.
So intructive. Thank you!
Dobby.... we gotta play a series or something before the site goes down! Lemme know when you wanna play. We can both record and upload it (you can commentate after the fact if you want)...I think that would be cool :)
Yay u took my idea
I enjoy watching videos from both Dobby and Fairway. It would be great to see a friendly best of 5 series between the two of you with you both recording. It would be a great opportunity for your students and fans to see both sides of the game. I realize it is a time commitment from both of you but hope it happens. :)
Yes @Eric Rathbun
So fun. Whats is "lotto"?
Lotto is when a player attacks a piece that hasn't moved with a very high piece. They are hoping the piece they hit isn't a bomb. Some players will gamble early in the game that the pieces on the front rows don't have any bombs. They might gamble with a Marshal or General. Sometimes they might attack 3 or more unmoved pieces trying to get an early insurmountable lead. If they hit a bomb, lots of time the "lottoer" will then quit or else try lottoing with their next highest piece until they hit a bomb. Most experienced players try not to lotto, unless they get too far behind in the game and they have to gamble. Most of the time "lottoers" are very easy to beat. They don't have the patience or skill to play a long game. Try to make a setup, so that a lottoer can't do too much damage on any side they randomly attack. The disadvantage of early lottoing is you reveal your high piece. If you lotto with a marshal, your opponent can counter attack with their general. Don't quit if a lottoer captures a few good pieces early in the game. Plan a good counter attack, since you know 1 of their high pieces and try to get back into the game. If it's a desperate situation, you can always lotto yourself and hope to capture an open flag.
hey dobby i recently started playing the major attack strategy but players kept consolidating all the reaveled high peices in the center and i couldnt get anything done how do i deal with that kind of play?
The major attack Strategy was really a gimmick. I wanted to show beginners that you can fall behind a lot, but still win. It was also important to show how important information, planning and capturing lots of smaller pieces can win games. It's very hard to win losing 3 Majors at the start against players with a 500 ELO or higher. Losing 1 or 2 Majors to get pieces and information is a much safer play. But it also helps to have other pieces ready to attack(Mar, Gen, Col) and targets to attack before you attack with your Majors.
I was reading the Stratego message boards regarding the calamity of the goings-on with the apparent demise of the site at the end of the year. The whole thing is so unfortunate. I pay almost $80/year to play video poker on the internet and it's worth every cent. The fact that they didn't pay enough attention to the site and charge each username a fee to play is inexcusable.
Frankly, I think you guys should be playing tournaments for some serious money. You put your time and efforts into the game, but that notwithstanding - the status quo of this sucks (unless I don't know something).
It's very sad that the Stratego game will be ending at the end of the year. I assume they didn't want to pay to port the site from Adobe Flash to another format. The game on Stratego.com was very well done. I love the graphics and interface. I guess players will have to go to www.gravon.de/gravon/stratego/stratego.jsp to play Stratego in 2021. I don't like their user interface or graphics. It will probably be hard for many players to use that site. I bet many will just stop playing. Very sad.
I think he read you very well.
Keep the vids coming. Let’s see some gold opponent vids
Can you make a vid about coping with the site going down, please? 😢
You can still play at gravon. www.gravon.de/gravon/?language=english

400 is not a lot. I guess for a Stratego channel it's OK. I think I only asked for subscribers in just 1 video. I figure if they like the channel, they'll subscribe.
Its gud dobby tho, you have been a help to so many ppl so ty
DOBBY!!!!!!
I love capturing the flag with the marshal. I think the biggest move in this game was the capture of his spy.
The odds of the flag being part of a double bomb formation were very, very low. If it wasn't the flag, I'd capture another small piece and could still swap Marshals and probably win. I liked my odds. I love playing the statistics in this game, especially where the flag could be located. Try that Miner bluff when you can. It's so effective. I'm still not sure why he let me get the spy. Maybe he thought he didn't need it anymore with my "unknown" Marshal pinned. But you should never let an opponent capture a piece that can get away. I should have saved my Major early in the game and losing it with the Colonel lotto almost cost me the game. Games where you screw up royally and plan a comeback to win are always satisfying. I'm still rusty at playing after not playing for almost a year and half.
I think I will if it ever presents itself. There have been a few times I acted like I was chasing a piece with a known high ranking piece only to keep advancing and get an open flag that wasn't entirely a lotto but knowing how similar players usually set up their boards.
I like chasing revealed Colonels back to their side with a miner early in the game if I can get to their 2nd row from the bottom. Hopefully, I get lucky and can hit a bomb on their 2nd row and open up a possible flag location. Plus, the colonel might show where his marshal or spy is located. It's best to do when you have all of your miners. You never want to lose too many miners early in the game.
Nooo Dobby... you changed your name.
