I've gone from trumpet to flute, and now im starting on soprano, I think my year of flute playing really taught me pitch and tone especially in the high range, and it also helped me with my embouchure.
Max flute is the worst choice of instrument to develop embouchure imo
Max flute really made it hard for me to develop embouchure

Thank you for the instructional videos, Donna! I am a teacher also. Good advice on Soprano Sax - start with the Clarinet! If you haven't made a video already for this question, it would be nice to address "How to know when it is time to throw away that reed." Many of my beginners keep playing the same reed until it turns brown and has many chips in the tip of the reed. (yuch)

Hi D I watch your other video on Reed/mouthpiece. I start with a 1.5 reed my friend who was the sax player for bony M use a 5 reed, and tell me I should be doing better than size 2 reed. I play both soprano Yani 992 curve and a cannon stone series straight. I also have S54 ref alto. I find if I play a size 3+ reed the tone is more warmer an sound sweeter. So I blow my mouth piece with a stiffer reed and my embouchure and muscle get stronger and play with a 2.5/3reed. I use a Lawton 7* metal both sax ( I had to send back the 2 soprano mouthpiece and they got it right the 3rd time) lot of people don't do breathing exercise Glen

What is your opinion on holding a tenor saxophone while sitting. I naturally hold it to the front of me but I have seen tutorials that say this is incorrect. Am I better off in the long run holding my instrument to the side? I can play either way and have noticed more stability from playing from the side.

What is a good reed to start on as a beginner on Tenor Sax? for example 2.0, 2.5......
Either a Rico Royal 2 or a Vandoren blue box 2. Keep in mind the Vandoren is a bit stronger than the Rico Royal
Thankis Donna, for the sincere, informative video. I had to up the volume all the way to hear you untill the ads came along. You mentioned "balance" regarding reeds, mouthpiece etc. Well I'm suggesting better balance in the sound mixing Almost a pun, but not. You're good!
This was a really old video. Sound is much better since then.
You should review the new DICKERSON RESONATOR ligature for clarinet sold on ebay
Clarinet is not my forte, and if I played it more, I would still stick with Rovner Products

Hai Donna i also play saxophones i have tenor alto soprano and baritone saxophone i like somwhat soft setup like jody jazz hr7* on tenor and alto.soprano and baritone and 2.5 reed is that to soft everyone says no it is to soft I am self-taught sorrey for my bad inglish im Norwegian
It's not that the setup is too soft, you have to go by your sound. Are you consistently squeaking or sound very edgy? Also, if your pitches cut out on you, or you can't extend your range higher...

So how to know if the sax reed is to hard????
Your video seems to have covered quite well the questions asked. Not really relevant to the subject discussed in the video is an aspect of saxophone plalying which has brought forth much confusing, contradictory, and even nonsensical information. I refer to the subject of playing in subtones. Scientifically there does not exist any such entity as a subtone but it is generally understood what is meant by the subtone sound. Is there any one proper , sure method of obtaining and playing the subtone sound? I am sure there would be many who would appreciate and thank you for any information that might help in obtaining this most beautiful sound. I realize that there can only be one Ben Webster, Stan Getz, Paul Desmond ,Johnny Beecher and the many other outstanding masters of the subtone, but surely it should be possible for the average player to obtain at least shades of the subtone sound of these Greats. Thank you.

La Voz "hard" are just planks aren't they?

Very good but to many subjects in one Video. Please keep the Videos shorter and only one or maximum two subjects at once. Max length 5 to max 7 minutes. Would very much appreciate. In this Video you talk a lot about different things but I do not hear much about how to know iff the reed is to hard or to soft.
