“I suppose In the end the whole of life becomes an act of letting go. But what always hurts the most is, not taking a moment to say goodbye.” Kills me every time
Of course the second story, The horrific story, was the real story. To get through this traumatic event and live the rest of his life, he had to believe in the tiger story. It mentally gave him some way to deal. The island was a somewhat solace and tempting , it was shaped like his mom lying on her back, but it was certain death. Giving up. It was better compared to the turbulent sea, but something was telling him, the tiger was telling him to not give up. Go back in the boat and keep trying to get back to find land. Once he’s did, he was able to free the tiger from his Soul. He didn’t need to have the tiger in him now. But it was bitter sweet bc the tiger is what gave him strength and courage that kept him alive. One of my fav movies. Great reaction!
Which gives the whole thing about believing in God all the more poignant. God is not the truth. But it makes for the better story. That's why people prefer to go with it.
@@MrGittz There isn’t a question of what story is true, the adult Pi asks the writer “which story do you prefer?” of course, the horrific story is true, who would make that up? His story changing all the characters in to animals was faith in God, and a way of psychologically, dealing with the aftermath of a traumatic situation that happened in his life so he can deal, living the rest of his life as a normal person again.
My wife and I were just speechless when we left the movie theater after watching this, then we talked about it for an hour. We had no idea what it was about, so we pretty much had the same type of reaction. Just a great movie. Like Mrs. Movies said, it works both ways. Either story could be true, and both are amazing stories; one dark and morbid, the other inspirational.
I like to believe the theory that Richard Parker represented his hatred. Theres many stories in which survivors are kept alive by what we would consider “negative” emotions. Pi tried to control Richard Parker/his anger, he failed. Pi tried to dominate Richard Parker/his anger, he failed. Finally Pi learned that the only way was to co-exist with Richard Parker/his anger. His anger kept him alive, but once he landed to shore, there was no need for his anger no more, that’s why Richard Parker leaves.
📽 1) I'm sad you didn't get to see this on a giant screen! Some films are feasts for the eyes and Ang Lee's "Life of Pi" is one of them. 2) 😂 "Piscine" is French for swimming pool. 3) 🙏 RIP, Irrfan Khan, who passed away in 2020. He played the adult Pi.
"Lion" is a really good movie about a young Indian boy who gets lost from his village in India and the movie shows him trying to get back there ..... Its based on an unbelievable true story as well ... Really well worth a watch
The proboscis monkey's nose literally is just to let the female know how fertile he is. So yes, it's literally meant to be phallic looking by nature's design.
45:38 The Island of mircats was his ability to live on the ocean on his own. He was able, as a body, to be self contained and provide for his fresh water an dead fish, but to move on he had to leave the seductive ecosystem he created and return to civilization.
This was a required read before i left for a half year in Africa for field research work (6 books, this was one of them). Helped me understand life in a new land, and how to look at it through their eyes. Some day ill retire back to doing that same research... it really was a life changing experience out there.
The main reason for the aspect ratio change during the flying fish scene, was to help accentuate the 3D. If you look close, you can see the fish "break out" of the new aspect ratio, to make it seem like they were literally flying out of the screen
This was amazing in a big 3D theater screen. The flying fish sequence changed aspect ratios, but it also simulated a 3D effect by having the fish come "out" over the black bars. It's a really cool effect that wouldn't work in a lot of other movie scenes.
I only watched it at home, but I have 3D-TV set so, yeah I agree, the movie is great in 3D. Especially because it was actually shot with 3D cameras instead of being turned into 3D in post.
Nature is crazy. I was in the bush tree planting for 2 months and words can’t do justice explaining some of beauty landscapes and wildlife I witnessed! 🌲 🐝

UNFORTUNATELY ,HE PASSED AWAY IN 2020 DUE TO CANCER.
Wow! What an unexpected reaction! I remember seeing this one when I was little. Hopefully rewatching it again with you guy’s will illuminate some of the more adult aspects of the film that I missed when I was younger.
It was the second time he'd won Best Director without his film winning Best Picture--it happened also with Brokeback Mountain (which I haven't seen). If I'm not mistaken, he's the only director who had this happen twice.
The plot line is that the guy is the tiger. He killed all of them and can't cope with the memory, so he goes into fantasy land. There, now you know what it's about. Cheers 🍺
Every time I hear you guys say “Tiger” when talking about it afterwards I had the Eye of the Tiger song play in my head, if we go with the version where Pi metaphorically is the Tiger. Because he had the eye of the Tiger. I prefer the version where there was a real tiger. Losing his family on the freighter was horrific but somehow even more so if in fact the cook killed his mom and had turned to cannibalism. It’s somehow worse when it’s human beings causing the horror. I loved this movie and when Pi wakes up to a doldrums and the Pacific water is smooth as glass is probably one of the most beautiful visuals I’d ever seen, helped I watched it on a 4K screen (years ago when 4K had just come out as a resolution). Something hyper-real about that moment.😅
Richard Parker is a name always associated with cannibalism.. so him being the Tiger, the scene when he was 1st time eating "biscuits" and somehow he was vomiting, you know what's up.. and my theory about the Carnivorous island is just the metaphor of his situation.. his boat is a little island of cannibalism and also you guys notice the island is shaped like a person, which some people theorized that its his mothers rotten corpse that he was eating.. maybe he was eating it and when he saw his mothers tooth then he snap back to his senses and immediately thought he have to leave that "island" which he don't want it to be his last moments..
When I watched the movie I was struck by one thought: much of the movie was all about food and eating! Also the movie gave away the transcendental nature of Piscine right at the start. The number Pi is a transcendental number. A story with God (and animals) is the better story.
Hindu mythology states that Lord Vishnu is thought to be floating in the cosmic ocean on an island. The Lord provided Pi with shelter when he had given up on ever surviving. It is an illustration of a belief.
The book is great. The movie too is a good adaptation, I remember watching it in the cinema. I cried like a baby at the ending when Richard Parker left him, both when watching the movie and reading the book. It is so philosophical.
I read the novel before I saw the movie. I went to the theater to see it in 2012 because I was eager to see how they adapted it. It was very faithful to the source material overall. The CGI is a little clunky at times, though I can’t imagine how else it could have been filmed. Tigers aren’t exactly easy to train.
Doesn't matter which story is true, its what what you believe! A lot of Hindu spiritualism involved here...the island is the shape of Vishnu, the God of preservation and the salvation of humanity.
I think if you go with the more "realistic" story, then the island with meercats is actually his mother's dead body and those meercats are the maggots, acid pool for being gastric acid, the island looks like a person lying down. So he is basically feeding on her corpse to survive.
You guys are going to love this story I know I always have, but now I'm really wanting to watch "Slumdog Millionaire" again. One of the greatest most unexpected stories I've ever seen.

It's pretty obvious when he asks the writer in his house which does he want to believe: the story of tragedy and trauma, where people (including himself) were their worst? Exactly! And at least for me when I go back and re-watch it I can practically see the real tragedy unfolding. Especially when the Orangutan dies and the tiger appearing.
The tiger story was Pi’s way of mentally dealing with what he went through, its real for him and that’s why he tells the reporter thank you when he says he also prefers the tiger story
