I’m a 13 year old girl, my mom passed when I was 9 and she was hispanic. I always felt like I was going to intrude on a culture that isn’t exactly mine so I have never made and ofrenda. But recently my dad has remarried and I felt like I wanted to be closer or at least recognize my mom in a way so I’m going to make her an altar in my room.
I’m Mexican but from Texas, so we didn’t celebrate most Mexican traditions as we should’ve growing up.. thanks for educating, I plan to celebrate from this year on & pass the traditions on to my kids 🧡
its never too late. I'm 23 and my family just started making ofrendas after years of living in Texas because a lot of our family passed away this past year.
Also Mexican from Texas. This is such a common story for Tejanos. Our families faced a lot of identity struggles that we can never fully understand. Don't feel alone in this. Our family practiced some traditions, and lost others. But the great thing is, we are in a time where we can be proud of and honor our traditions. Now is the time to learn from one another and reconnect with our old ways. Thinking about doing a community ofrenda for Dia de muertos in my hometown. Make it a neighborhood thing.
I’m not Mexican. I’m Asian but my partner is Mexican. He lost his mom 2 years ago and this year we want to honor her in our home. Thanks to the movie coco, I learned so much about this beautiful tradition. Thank you for also putting out this video. This gave me the inspiration I needed and I will ensure I properly honor every element of the ofrenda for his mom. 🙏🏻
I'm a college student running a minority student coalition and I've been looking for ways to bring dia de los muertos to the campus for students who celebrate. This video helped me so much with ideas and educating myself about the holiday. Thank you!
I'm puertorican and we celebrate Día de los Muertos visiting the cemetery and placing flowers on their relatives graves. I love how people celebrate this tradition in Mexico.
Annette Rivera, you are correct! All around the world, the "time of the dead" is observed from 31st Oct (All Hallows Eve) till Nov 2nd (All Souls Day), with Nov 1st being All Saints day. While many cultures have their unique names & ways of celebrating, this seems to be a worldwide observance.. especially in the parts of the world where it was introduced by the Catholic church from the 11th century. P.S. Even my Venezuelan grandparents celebrated with graveside offerings. My parents no longer observe it, but each culture has their unique way of observing.
My parents never talked to me about ofrendas and noone makes them in my family and Im mexican american. I never been to mexico I was born in America. I been wanting to make a oftenda for years but didnt know much about it until I saw your video today. Now I want to make one and carry on the tradition so my daughter can learn also :)
You definitely should!! It’s such a beautiful tradition. I hope that by the time I’m no longer here, my babies will feel closer to me by putting up an ofrenda and continuing the tradition 🥺🧡
I’ve always been so connected with this part of Mexican heritage but I grew up catholic so we never participated. I’m an adult with my own home so now I’m finally looking into properly making an ofrenda for my family. ❤
Last night as I watched this, the stories you shared about your grandpa made me smile and it made me long for my grandpa. When I went to bed I dreamt that I made an ofrenda (which i have never made by the way 😄) and in my dream he came back. I could see his face and even his eyes so clearly (which is very rare in dreams.) It’s the first time i’ve ever dreamt of him since he passed 4 years ago. I just thought I’d come back here and say thank you. 🙏🏻
Your ofrenda looks so beautiful! I am not Mexican but I love this tradition and I am definitely putting up an altar this year. Unfortunately, I can't find cempasúchil in the UK, so I will have to make them with orange tissue paper. I also made a pan de muerto las year and it was delicious! It was hard to make though, it took me a whole day!! worth it :-)
i haven’t celebrated Dia de los muertos in years since i’ve been so busy with being newly married and moving from the US to Belgium. this is the first year that i’ll be able to make my own ofrenda and not only was your video super helpful but it was super comforting
Wow this is beautiful 😍 I just the movie “coco” and it was such an amazing movie! I love the Mexican tradition and how you honour your loved one. Makes me feel like a proud Mexican (even though I’m African lol) Love and peace xx
Que hermoso video, no hay que dejar morir nuestras tradiciones y mas una celebración tan bonita como esta. Me encantan todos tus videos, saludos de la Ciudad de México.
I'm one generation removed from my Hispanic culture and I felt so incredibly validated and seen when you mentioned not needing to be Mexican to celebrate. Although I'm technically Mexican by ethnicity, I wasn't raised in the culture and missed a lot of the traditions. My mom made her own rendition of the ofrenda and I want to make my own now that I'm moved out and in my own apartment. Thank you for sharing yours and I'll be doing more research while I plan. Happy fall!!! 🍂🏵💛
I am not Mexican, but would like to honor my departed family members. Thank you so much for sharing your family traditions. Blessings, Health, Prosperity and Peace to you and yours and to all who read this! 👍💀😇💖
we never celebrated day of the dead even though i'm biracial and since my mother passed away we decided that she would have loved this tradition. she was white but adored day of the dead decorations and hispanic culture. we didn't know where to start and i'm so happy to say that we are going to!! thank you so much for giving us this to go off of!
I remember celebrating All Souls Day in the Philippines. My boyfriend and I were in Old Town in San Diego a few days ago. I was so inspired to make something for my mom... Your ofrenda looks so beautiful!! 🧡🥰🥀🍞
Your altar looks so beautiful!! Here in Brazil we commonly go to the cemetery and take flowers and candles to the graves of our relatives, those who cannot light candles at home
I lost three of my grandparents within the last year. In my high school Spanish classes we studied Dia de los Muertos and celebrated in class. I felt inspired to do something this year. Thank you so much for this video.
Lovely ofrenda! Love that you share about you abuelo. My father passed 21 years ago on Nov. 2nd and the Day of the Dead is that more meaningful to me and my Mexican Family.
Me encanto tu altar y que sigas esta tradición y que se respete este día de los muertos y pedir a Dios por todos los que se nos an adelantado té felicitó y gracias por tu explicación
I’m Cuban and we celebrate El Dia de Los Fieles Difuntos from November 1-2. Más común para nosotros vamos al cementerio los cuales en esta fecha tienen extended open hours and ponemos flores y nos sentamos a hablar con nuestros muerticos. A los niños les decimos ahí descansaban los que de cierta forma an contribuido a que nacieras. We light tons of candles and tomamos cafecitos y ron y después de las 12 marchamos a casa. ♥️ un beso.
This is absolutely gorgeous. I'm not Mexican but I'm so interested in this tradition. On Nov 2nd I can't wait to make Mexican hot chocolate and watch Coco 🧡
I love this! I’ve always wanted to honor my late mother with my kids and was never sure how, but this would be so special for us to do! Where did you find your marigold/bead garland?
I'm English and Filipino and since I was just 3 months old ( I was born in August) I celebrated dia de los muertos we would set up pictures, dress up, make all our loved ones favorite foods ❤ and then we would go to the cematary I've ways celebrated it but I make sure to pay extra attention now since I'm 11. ❤ I celebrate it to remember the people in my familìa but I also xelabrate it for a very special person * drumroll please * my madré when I was 9 she passed away and so ive always made it a point so mame it as perfect as I can mame it I kniw she'd be proud of me and I miss her every day 😔 but I kniw she wouldn't want me to be sad and she would instead want me to celebrate all the great years she's lived she was a great mother ♡♡

I will be making my first of dia de muertos at home with my family this year and am so excited! I loved your video and got lots of great ideas. Question- how did you make the flower garland you hung on the wall? I would like to make something similar. Thank you!
I love this tradition so much. You did such a beautiful job and I love seeing different traditions brought out around this time of the year. My family loves the movie coco, we named our dog after the dog in that movie bc we are obsessed and it’s so cool to see something like this.

I do not currently have a relationship with my father, however I was always curious about mexican/Hispanic culture. He was born in Mexico, but endured some really terrible things there, and chose to try and forget all about it and erase as much of it as possible when he was adopted and then moved to the US. However despite his best efforts, I've always been curious about the culture. Ive struggled with wanting to celebrate dia de los muertos specifically, because I personally dont believe in ghosts, or human "spirits" sticking around on earth for very long. However, my favorite aunt passed away a year ago, and on top of not being able to attend her funeral, I havent really found a way to honor and remember her. I mentioned wanting to try celebrating dia de los muertos in my own special way to my boyfriends dad (who is like a surrogate father to me), and his immediate response was "Yeah, let's do it!" (Which is culturally interesting because my boyfriends dad and his family are Asian, so well be combining stuff as we see fit, an Asian-Mexican-Guatemalan fusion Dia de los Muertos!) (My boyfriends mom is Guatemalan) We've been slowly adding to our list of loved ones we'll be remembering, we've been calling them our "Remembering Group". You're video has helped inform me of some of the customs and traditions of the holiday. Thanks very much for sharing, looking forward to my first Dia de los Muertos 💀🇲🇽🎉
That is such a beautiful story about your aunt, and a very special way to celebrate her memory! So happy I was able to help 🧡 Sending lots of love your way!

You can never intrude! You’re one of us
I hope you made it ❤

Yes Dia de los Muertos is a Mexican tradition that roots back to the Aztecs.
lol what it originated in Mexico 😭
