  • In this video I cover how and why I suspected that one of my six AGM deep cycle batteries was going bad in my 12 Volt Solar Battery bank. I then discuss how to find which battery is bad, and how to remove it. Simple. Remove the caner.

Harbor freight sells a reasonably priced battery load tester. The old adage you get what you pay for. First thing you should do is redo all the connections on the clamps. They did a poor job of making those connections. With a load test all you need to do is remove one of the battery connections to open your string (load removed of course) then you can load test each of your batteries to find bad and weak batteries in your string.

A bad battery when charging will show high voltage. Leave them hooked up while charging and simply look for the one with higher than normal v reading. You can also load test to see which one is showing low voltage. Try this before completely tearing down your bank.

Good advice. You can also remove the load , then open the string by removing one connection on one of the batteries then you can use a load tester to check individual batteries. I like load testing better than voltage monitoring.

Can a inverter also be going bad ? can it start drawing more power than it used to for powering the same load ???

Thanks for leaving everyone hanging. You used a Midtronics tester but did not take the time to explain what the tested is and why you used it..

I'm curious how long did these batteries last you? Was it worse or better than other kinds of batteries?

So if my 24v agm solar battery bank stays at 27.6v basically float mode most of the day are my batteries ok ?

with the battery testers i`ve seen they ask for the CCA to be entered, if you test a AGM, what value do you enter? is it just the AH rating of the AGM?
Cheers... i think i have a similar problem to sort out

hi this might be a random question Im currently taking apart a solar set up from a van. I have everything taken out except the battery which still has some wires connected to it. There are two loose wires and two that go to the fuse box. The two loose ones were connected to the charge controller but I took the ends of the wires out of the controller. Will the battery electrocute me if I take a wrench to unscrew the wire? how did you do that safely? My set up does not have an off switch. To disconnect the charge controller I covered the solar panels but I think there might still be some power left in the battery because the diesel heater still had its light until I disconnected it.

Why did you have to tear the whole battery Bank down to do this, you could have just left it all connected, disconnected your solar panel and seen which one drained the most by the morning.

Keeping the batteries connected for testing will cause a sphere of influence on the bad battery. You will get a false higher reading on the bad battery.

Nice video ! One question i have a similar set i have 6 batterys 12 volts agm 100ah each im not sure what the absorption time should be for my battery bank i have it now absorption voltage 14.5 for 1 hr and float to 13.8 ?

    • @rayberger2694

Your float voltage is good, but your boost voltage looks a little low to me, can you raise your boost voltage to 14.6 or 14.7 ? My Renogy solar chargers come preset with a boost time period of 2 hours for Sealed lead acid / AGM.
