Poor man died an agonizing death due to medical incompetance. You can tell by the size and time it took to build the mausoleum the people of his day viewed Garfield's assasination the same way we viewed JFK's.

It wasn’t medical incompetence. They didn’t know in those years about the stuff we do today.. good grief

He was considered a very affable and competent man, and probably would have been a great president had he lived.

In the mid-1980's I lived across the street from this graveyard. Beautiful in the Springtime.

What an incredible tomb that a Roman emperor would be proud of

Wow. It's really over the top. I'm astonished. People of the time were really upset by his murder. Somebody made a comparison to JFK, which seems appropriate. Imagine the cost to build that in today's money. So somebody's going to be paying an electric bill to keep the lights on forever?

@@philip2010 JFK has a hole in the ground, Garfield has a palace.

I grew up in Cleveland and never knew that was there. I'm going to have to go there when I go back.

Not far from my home, been inside once. There's one million yellow daffodils planted around the Memorial that drew huge crowds every spring.

My favorite memorial to Garfield is in Washington D.C. just outside the Capitol Building. His former House colleagues bought a statue of Garfield, looking like he was walking to his Congressional office.

I'm surprised the coffins are not in a sarcophagus and out in the open
But in their in a caged crypt

We toured this in 2018, I find it interesting that these are the only two whos caskets are not burried, entombed or in some type of encasement. Yes, a misserable death but more from sepsis than the gunshot itself, but look at what they knew then compared to what we know now.

This is something I've really wanted to do since I found out President Garfield was buried here in Cleveland. I have to make it a New Year's Resolution for 2025 to go visit. Such a grand and beautiful final resting place.

Fame and power is fleeting in this world. Say the name Garfield to the average American today and they will think of a lasagna eating orange cartoon cat🐱.

You just posted this 12 days ago. I thought it was closed until spring? I just moved to Cleveland right down the road from there. Been eager to see it, but thought I’d have to wait.

Garfield certainly deserved it. Born in Ohio into poverty. Worked his way through prep school (as a janitor). Graduated from Williams College in two years - with honours. Civil War veteran, Union officer, saw action in Kentucky, retired from service as Major General. Ohio state senate, then 17 years in Congress.
As President, rooted out corruption in the Post Office. Spoke out in favour of education and civil rights for Black Americans. Wanted to increase US exports.
A lunatic and a medical incompetent robbed us of a potentially good President.
