A “lick” is to successfully rob someone, usually someone with a lot of valuables. The Adam Sandler reference is likely to his character in Uncut Gems who was a jeweler.
The people need you to check out Ka “Descendants of Cain” which is imo one of the best albums of the last ten years. It has a ton of references to biblical scripture and literature to help illustrate Ka’s trauma’s from growing up during the crack era.
Navy Blue is another young artist who is actually affiliated with Earl and Odd Future who you should check out (real name Sage).

Al is one of this generations best. But Madlib has been dominating the scene for like 2 decades now. Truly special
The thing with boldy is he doesn’t verbally express remorse, the remorse is deafening through his voice and vocal inflections. His bars always are recounting his past and the horrors and brutal realism associated with the crack game on either side. His flows I can best describe as sorrowful, perfect tonal inflection to accompany the lyrical content along with the Uncle Al sonic aesthetics.
Roc marciano is the one who lit the torch for this hip-hop renaissance in my opinion, he started the drumless loop hype
You definitely need to listen to his whole discography, lots of work with alchemist dj muggs madlib q-tip and other legendary producers

You right but technically Alchemist started that wave because he taught Roc to produce along with Large Pro and Pete Rock and more importantly, convinced him not to quit rapping after Flipmode Squad and The U.N. didn't work out for him.

'Concreature' has got to be my favorite portmanteau of his. Also, I think the snow globe to crystal ball line in a literal sense is him turning coke (powder form) to crack (crystal form), Boldy's quite the chemist.
The story telling on illegal search and seizure made my eyes water up
@@infrared6973 it really just seems like a stream of consciousness throughout his work. Less hyperbole and more just captivating storytelling flowing straight from his mind.
I've been a huge Boldy fan since 2012 and I never really thought about the juxtaposition between him sounding so relaxed and having rapid fire and dense rhymes. Very cool. Another thing I noticed is that since Boldy is more monotone and doesn't put extra weight on certain lines, they can have a tendency to hit you as being harsher/funnier/sadder/etc as a result. I don't know if that's intentional or not but it's a cool side effect. I find myself laughing at some messed up lines here and there.
We need more "Pots & Pans" and "Dinavolino" type Boldy
He's definitely a unique emcee, he's mastered his gritty delivery and montone flows. He has always been sick but the last 3 years he has improved a lot, these two alchemist albums are going to be talked about by hip-hop heads for decades
Vince Staples is another artist who is good at hiding some hard lines behind monotone and persistent flows
You should definitely check out his album from last year, Manger on McNichols. It focuses a lot more on Boldy’s personal life and centers around more storytelling

@Moeketsi Malepe I think that’s fair, but a summary at the very most. MoMN involves a lot of context and would be hard to fully sum up in one song, but yes, Carruth is a solid summary.
Manger at McNichols is one of the best albums of 2020.

Hitting a “lick” is a term used nowadays to mean when a person successfully robs/steals from someone. I think that’s what Boldy was attempting to say.

It means you came into a large sum of money. It doesn't necessarily mean robbery, although depending on context it definitely can.

/Shit got your bitch workin' my nerves out in Twin Peaks". One of Boldy's best strengths is turning something familiar on its head in a way you don't always pick up on the first listen. Comments also mentioning Uncut Gems. If you watch the music video for Double Hockey Sticks it's all shot in the style of Safdie brothers, with some shots directly lifted from uncut gems Boldy is wearing the same glasses adam sandler wears in that movie. Also a bit of a throwback to John Carpenter's Halloween in the double hockey sticks beat, boldy references Michael Myers. There's probably loads I'm missing as well but I think you can certainly say Boldy is very aware of the way Crack Rap is a cinematic experience. Manger on McNichols is a Sergio Leone Western and Bo Jackson is like a Michael Mann Crime Drama.
I find it entertaining how people who see the streets from the outside and hear the music. Hear the slingo and have no clue what it means but they can feel what the artist is saying. There’s a feeling there, an emotion.

I’m not sure at all how I came across this video besides searching for Boldy stuff, but this is solid gold. I laughed multiple times. I’ve never watched a rap album review from anyone of your specific demographic, absentminded that you’d even listen to it and I’m so glad I watched this. I’m going to watch others of your from albums I’ve heard and love. Great video. I almost NEVER write comments anywhere but you deserved my time. The authenticity shines thru. #salute
First reviewer I've seen who really understands the appeal of coke rap, how borderline impenetrable some of the inside lingo is really forces you to pay attention and think about what they're trying to get across. People talking about how this sort of rap is meaningless are really missing just how much you can unpack, particularly with this album

If you go back and listen to their previous collab album called The Price of Tea in China, I think you can see that Boldy definitely raps about more than just selling drugs. For instance, the opening song to that album (Carruth) is an extremely dark song where Boldy explores the remorse and grief that come with the lifestyle by referencing the potential to lose a child in the form of retaliation like the girlfriend of former NFL player Rae Carruth.

This album is flawless. Alchemist is a god damn beast of a producer, and Boldy is slick with those bars.

Most "Crack rappers" don't label themselves crack rappers its titled that from the consumers, the really "Good crack rappers" are really just venting their life and its become boxed into Urban dictionary entertainment for those who don't get it

Yooo I had this blasting in my ears this morning as I did copious amounts of prep for my job lol. These guys are both incredible. No one does it quite like Boldy. Not sure if you've heard his album with Sterling Toles (assuming you have) but it's some of the most unique jazz rap I've ever heard

One of the most slept on rappers. Boldy has been up next forever now and he deserves so much more credit. But his underground lexicon and real life experience, being a real G in Detroit, doesn’t matter if he blows up. He’s a secret piece of gold.

First time viewer and language nerd. Love this and subscribed! Two points. 1. I don't know drug dealing but I watched the Wire several times and I imagine the slang arms race is not only useful in rap, but also useful in throwing off any unwanted listeners in the drug business. 2. Mobb Deep used a Scarface sample on It's Mine, and given Alchemist's connection to them, the Scarface feel is probably deliberate.
Pusha T is a big influence to this "new" old generation of dope rappers (literally). The Clipse era of the duo w/ your Brother or the solo stuff, both amazing....

When he said Lick it’s Meaning in (plays,sales, clients,stops) a lick is a word for a robbery originally but now can also mean just a come up in general. And (a come up ) means to make some money

Like, to score, or to catch a lik, its like to make a transaction, be it robbing, selling, scamming, what’s have you. The term is essentially a verb, action oriented, but in turn comes to signify the target of the action- the Lik.

He’s got two previous albums with AL, and an ep. I believe their first collab. was “My first chemistry set”, then the “Boldface” ep and then “The price of tea in China”. Check them out. All solid projects.
Man I don’t know how you haven’t stumbled upon Ka yet. He’s a retired NYPD firefighter from Brownsville, BK, but also the greatest lyricist of all time.
His signature move with albums is centering them in some historical context: Japanese samurai culture with Honor Killed the Samurai (2016), Greek mythology with Orpheus vs. the Sirens (2018), and biblical with Descendants of Cain (2020).
If you enjoy Boldy’s duality of rapping in the most monotone way and saying the CRAZIEST shit, I promise you’ll find Ka to be Boldy times 10. He’s revered as one of the best ever to many, including me. The literal greatest pen in the genre:

Adam Sandler in Uncut Gems would be your first port of call regarding the reference, a little more tenuous but he _did_ also have that intercom scene in Happy Gilmore.
Then again, perhaps not so tenuous since this is Boldy we're talking about, so I can well believe he got two references in for the price of one.

Brictionary slingo: first look at the second part ‘slingo’ refers to the combination of the words “slang” and “lingo” and how an individual uses their slang interchangeably (ie different places have different slang terms for weed that’s been laced and one regions term might mean something else somewhere else) the bricktionary part refers to drug dealing talk. i know people that refer to drugs like it’s chicken 🤷🏽♂️🤦🏽♂️ don’t ask me why but yeah.

One of my favorite albums. It's akin to the language invention in A Clockwork Orange.
The Micky Mouse sweat shirt is Stezo who used to be a dancer and later started a solo career we lost him about a year ago.

I like "Diamond Dallas" the beat & rhymes are laid back,slang is tight.
The basement with the producer slaving away is kinda true lol I saw some interview with Alchemist (it might have been done by the dead end hip hop guys) in his home studio and he said he just stays in there for days on end making music. MadLib does the same thing he says he goes on runs where he barely even sleeps for days and is just in the zone making beats.

I’m guessing it’s because bo Jackson was known for being great at running which is how boldly feels he is at moving drugs. That’s why you always hear artists in crack rap use the term running base as a drug reference to baseball

Hey man do u think this style of rap has lost some if it's artistic integrity. It almost seems formulaic how many of these type of street raps come out. Is It a hardcore image to generate sales rather than general self expression.
I think that the correlation between authenticity and integrity has always been kind of silly. Dylan lied about his life in his songs and so did Ice Cube. I’m interested in the art, and as far as I can tell, Rap has never been better than it is right now.

But I feel like the gangster rap style has become cliche. Tyler seemed more refreshing. also who profits off if this image. You say rap is better than its ever been but these the subject matter been recycled for 30 years.
