#44 - Wood Turning - African Blackwood stopper with Celtic knot - attempt

- With recent events I have found myself with nothing but time on my hands. In the last couple days I have spent upwards of 12 hrs in the shop roughing bowls, turning pens this stopper and prepping projects. That said I’m going to make every effort to put out new videos as frequently as practical as I’m sure many folks are stuck as well!
This project was something I’ve been wanting to try for quite some time. I had a failed attempt a month or so ago on a pen which got me to looking around RUclips. About that time Huw Davies put out a video of how he makes his pens. After a successful pair of pen attempts I decided to tackle a stopper on camera. This is a piece of African Blackwood with ash veneer. It’s turned on a mandrel I received from PSI in a Niles stopper kit.
The stopper part I chose is a Niles bottle stopper BR-9000.

It’s not perfect and wish the knot was more circular instead of triangular but for the first try in larger stock I’m happy.

That's beautiful, Mert. I had no idea where you were going at the start but now I know. I always enjoy watching your videos so if you have to take a break when things get back to normal, we understand. We'll be here. You and the wife stay safe and healthy.
Bill
William Ellis thank you so much Bill! Part of why I do this is for the viewers like you that care! It’s more about people than themselves. With these trying times it’s so easy to get caught up in what’s best for “me” and not think about who is suffering down stream from there. We are going to do what we can to keep things rolling along on both sides and if we can make few people smile while in isolation I have succeeded! Be well my friend and stay safe!
Appreciate the comments and concern about everyone. These are scary times for everyone and even more so for those of us with small businesses that don’t know what’s going to happen. Stay safe, good luck to you and your wife. Enjoyed the video as always. Take care
Kent Maggio thanks Kent! The unknowns are what is tearing things apart right now. How long is the most trying! Good luck and stay well!
Look at that baby shine! The choice of woods is perfect.
Thank you for inspiring us to remember the business.
John Wallace thanks John! Hopefully these events give us time to reflect on where we spend our moneys and begin getting back to the way things used to be! Stay well my friend!
@@KennettBTurned, I hope So! Take care of yourself!
Love that you plugged the small business at the end...we will need to buy local and vacation in the country to give our selves a boost
Beautiful job!
woodworking 220-7 thanks Luie! Small business will need all the support from everyone to survive this crisis! Our small tree care company is currently on “limp mode”. Doing just enough to keep our staff paid and not put them or our clients at risk of exposure. There will be time for profits later, now it’s time to band together (6’ apart at least) and just survive this! Be safe!
Thank you for adding the Celtic knot to your piece that makes me so happy to see a part of my heritage go into something so naturally beautiful and become such an amazing piece of art thank you all your amazing videos hope your staying safe and healthy in these crazy times and i hope for more uploads to keep me entertained during my city's total lockdown and isolation
Liam Mcdermott thank you Liam! I will do my best to continue with the uploads! I’m trying to get one a week up and edit a second. I would like to get a back log of videos knowing when I go back to work I will have zero time to spend on the lathe😟. Stay safe and please be well!
Ps look forward to more Celtic knots... I find them very relaxing to create 🙂
@@KennettBTurned yup

Joyce E-Pennington thanks Joyce! I wish you all the best in these trying times as well! Stay safe, and be well!
That turned out great, Mert!
David Adamsen thanks David.
Hi Mert, Thank you so much for the wonderful shout out, I really appreciate it. Fantastic looking Bottle Stopper. I love the contrast between the Ash and the African Blackwood. One tip I can give is to build a sled for cutting the segments, I made mine for 30, 45, 60 and 90 degrees. This makes sure the angles always stay the same. I started off using the mitre gauge but it is not as accurate as a dedicated sled. The other tip is I always use a stop block so that all the cuts start at exactly the same place on each side of the blank so the rings will be in the same place on the blank. If you PM me on my FB page with your email I'll send you some pictures of my sled if you want. Take care Mert in these uncertain and difficult times. Cheers, Huw
Wooden-It-Be-Nice thanks so much Huw! I actually began the build on a sled of sorts but with all that is going on got pulled away from it and... when I came back, well I was frustrated at the situation and couldn’t think so I set it aside and pressed forward. It’s never a good idea to continue in that state but something needs to occupy our minds right now. I will definitely reach out today. Thanks so much. Take care!
That wood is beautiful! Nice job!
Adam Mrena Woodturning thank you Adam!

Christopher Gaskin thanks Chris!!!
KBT Nice project. I really like how it came out.
goodturnedayly thank you very much!
Fine workmanship Mert, as expected. And so shiny.
Lately, when I see these Celtic knots being made, I yell at them Why Did You Cut Through The Blank. And here you are no yelling needed And I guess I'd forgotten to remember it was Huw's method I saw first.
Stay safe. -Mike
MPart thanks Mike! Huw’s method is great. I watched his pepper grinder video today, I think his message in that video is to cut them all ther way off 🤣 at that size!
@@KennettBTurned Oops, sorry Huw.
You stay safe also
thanks!
Dumb question- what was the purpose of coating the piece with cy glue? Was it to prevent tear out? Beautiful job!
Dean Miller dean thanks for watch and your question! Certainly not a dumb question!!!! I stopped several times and coated the blank in CA to insure all the pieces were adequately bonded. My decision to do so was based on gaps seen when I stopped to check progress. I just didn’t want it to fly apart 😊. Thanks again for the question!
43rd.
cool
I really really love how that came out!
Where did you pick up the bushing? I'm really tired of using calipers. 🤣
Rebecca Hewett thanks Rebecca! That bushing came in the kit Lauren bought me for Christmas! I think Ruth had them on her web page but I’ll have to check! It is nice it’s just got to be centered!
What is this for?
Rudi Mentär it can be used as a wine stopper, or any other liquid in a bottle. It is good grade stainless steel and orings. Thanks for watching!
