I did that just to make it stronger. You can use just about anything. Try different things to see what sounds you like. An actual popsicle stick would be thicker and drilling a hole would be fine. The depressor I had was kinda thin.

I am wondering, do you need the heat shrink? Or can you just drill the hole in the depressor?
