@@ellesreptiles To properly maintain humidity in your glass tank, I'd recommend partially sealing the top. You can use aluminum tape on either the top or underside of the mesh screen, some people will say that the tape is a hazard on the inside, but well placed strong aluminum tape is not.
@GamebroTV Yes, for a clean look, apply it to the underside of the mesh top. People online will tell you to NEVER use tape of any type inside of an enclosure, however I assure you that your snake will be fine.
The good thing about rack systems is they keep humidity in them well with the right substrate so never really have problems with shedding, and it comes down to about $50 each level/ per snake if you get a 4-6 tub rack but that’s not including tax, shipping and the substrate nore thermostat that you would need to buy anyways but just trying to give you some info since you said you didn’t know much about rack systems and what they typically cost, but hope your having a great day :)
The initial set up is costly (snake, terrarium, substrate, decor, hides, etc.) but after that, they’re super cheap and easy to take care of. They eat once a week as babies and once every two weeks as adults, and rats/mice are inexpensive. Paying for food, replacement substrate, electricity for the heat, spring water, and occasionally updating decor when they outgrow them is what you have to do after the set up. I paid $450 for my snake (she’s a blue eyed Lucy) and I started with a tub, until we got my terrarium out of the garage in my childhood home (had one for a bearded dragon as a kid). You also have to keep in mind whether the snake is used to eating live feeders and whether you are gonna switch from live to frozen/thawed or not (which you should, for the snake’s safety and because feeding a baby rodent to a snake is a sad experience). They might go on a hunger strike, as ball pythons are notorious for hunger strikes and might go months without eating. I’m so glad mine is an eater, I was worried she’d go on strike. Also, make sure to get plenty of clutter and stuff to cover the back and sides of the tank, like a backdrop or some clutter with suction cups (like fake plants). I have dinosaur decor in mine and she adores her velociraptor skull, as well as her hammock. They also love climbing, so get some branches!
Yea you made a valid point there about substrate. It’s a recurring cost, so bigger is better ! It may make you feel better to spend less money in one sitting ( $8 for an 8 qt bag vs $18 for a 24qt) but trust me it works out cheaper buying the bigger bag . Also sphagnum moss is wayyy cheaper at Home Depot than from reptile / pet stores. It’s $5 for a huge bag. Also it’s been a year and a lot of these things , thankfully are slightly cheaper . Lol
Lots of great info!! I agree with a lot of info you put out here! Some of it... I don’t completely disagree with, however could be altered! On my side I’d never keep a ball in an aquarium, unless it’s a solid top, side slide opener. Humidity reasons. A lot of people strongly disagree with bins. However I think bins are scientifically proven to be best for this specific animal.
In aviation, we have a practice of reserving money for both routine an unexpected maintenance that we factor into the hourly operating cost of an aircraft. I know aviation and owning a ball python is not exactly an apple to oranges comparison, but what would you suggest would be a safe amount to put away each month just in case for vet bills?

My plan is 4x2x2' pvc eventually, and the total setup with bioactive lights, ceramic heat emitter as main heat and supplemental on the other side for winter... looking at about 1k for the enclosure. But I also think a quality enclosure that is big enough to provide enrichment and help with temp and moisture retention will be worth it in the long run. Also think they are very nice to look at. I know this is 4 year old video but think it is worth mentioning if people want an enclosure that is safe and designed for temp and moisture control. Kage, Vision and blackbox are all brands I've seen recommended the most frequently. Personally going with Blackbox since my intrests are with snakes and ball pythons in particular and think their opinions are great. But Vision and Kage seem to be the most popular for people who keep more than just snakes AND also have experience setting up their own (blackbox does builtouts for you).
One thing i would want to note for a first time owner, these snakes get pretty big (5-6 Feet) so at some point that 40 gallon tank wont be quite large enough for the snake or will be quite tight, you want the tank to at least be wide enough that the snake can stretch out a bit as well as can fit a water dish that the whole snake can lay in. 40 Gallon is good for starting but expect to get a 65 gallon in the long run.
Great job! What, you mean it costs more than just the cost of the animal! ;) You do a wonderful job of explaining the reality of keeping an animal like this.
For tropical substrate like eco earth, I’ve seen people put cleaner insects in with it and then they don’t have to change the substrate. So that might be a good way to save on costs🤷🏼♀️

That's interesting. The reason I dont link to them is just because I've never ordered from them. (I only like to recommend things I've personally tried). I'll have to check them out! Thanks! 😊
I honestly hate the top open glass tanks so much. I personally use wooden vivariums with front glass sliding doors. The wood does not rot, and it keeps in heat and humidity in much better, plus the sides are covered so less stress. 😊
Hi! I want to use a wooden vivarium and there’s something on the bottom of the actual part I would use as a tank, do you know what I should do heat wise?
This lady is so pretty and has such a great accent! More importantly, she creates realistic and comprehensive expectations. 👍However, there is updated information that scientists and behavioralists have observed that supports overhead heating and lighting. Its worth looking into before buying heatmats at least so you have all the information.
I have a quick question. So I'm in a group for ball pythons and they say that they shouldn't be in a tank more than 30 gallons and if it's bigger than that, no matter how much clutter they have they will still get stressed. Buuut on other places I heard that it's okay to have a tank more than that for example 40 gal as long as it has lots of clutter. So idk what to think now. . . . . Is it okay to have them in a enclosure bigger than 30 gal? (With lots of clutter)
(Sorry it took me a while to respond, I've had some family stuff going on but...) I've found that a majority of ball pythons will use the room you give them. They love to climb and explore. My female didn't like her 40g until she was an adult, but now she uses every inch of that tank. And clutter is important in any size tank! 😊 it's called enrichment, and it actually keeps their brains active and healthy. If you put your ball python in a large tank, and you notice they're not coming out at night, or theyre not utilizing the space, you can definitely downgrade (or putting black poster board around the sides helps them feel secure). But as long as they're active and using the space, definitely give them the space 😊
Hey now 🦎👀's, Weights look AWESOME on top of the tank! Especially when your tank is in your weight room 🏋🏾♂️😉. Initial not including pet - $100 (thrift shops are your friend) Annually - $75 (50 frozen from expo, substrate) Oh, your personal experience will vary.
Haha in a weight room it 100% would look awesome. And yes! Thrift stores and craigslist/facebook marketplace are awesome for money saving. I forgot to mention that in the video, but it’s in the description. $75 a year isn’t bad at all 😊
what about feeding the snake chicken eggs? I think I remember someone doing that wen I was little. Eggs from the grocery store would be cheaper than rats.
The best advice I can give is to show her lots of videos of them. Most people are afraid of what they don’t understand. I used to be scared of them too! But constantly watching videos of them really helped. Going to reptile expos helped as well! Good luck! 😊
I found out if they bite and won't let go spraying vinegar in their mouth will get them to let go and can train them not to bite cuz they will know if they do they will get the vinegar in there mouth
All you need to punch holes in a bin is a nail and a rock. I'd suggest an actual hammer, but you can improvise a punch with a nail (not self tapping screw.)
Love your channel, I have a crestie and bearded dragon but I’ve always wanted snakes! How do you feel about their ‘beginner snake’ status? Although easy to look after particularly if you already keep reptiles , I’ve seen that they can be finicky eaters x
I think they’re great! Colubrids are definitely easier overall, but a ball python was my first ever snake. They can definitely be finicky eaters, but it usually resolves itself (it stresses you out more than them). Overall, I just prefer them over corn snakes, king snakes, etc. 😊
Im going to get a ball python soon, but is it fine to just "only" use coconut faber for substrate? I would like to know (-: I want my snake to be happy
Please use coco coir rather than peat/sphagnum moss as this is not a renewable sources, it takes centuries to develope the moss whereas coco coir is very renewable, it retains humidity very well and is affordable.
Hi! Sphagnum moss and Sphagnum Peat moss are two different things. Peat moss is the one that is nonrenewable, while sphagnum moss can be harvested without destroying bogs - and it's renewable in only a few years. Sphagnum peat moss is usually what is used in gardening soils. Unfortunately, coco coir on its own does not help one of my ball pythons - he was actually blinded by his vet after a failed shed. Anyway hopefully these resources will help: southsideplants.com/blogs/plant-care/peat-moss-vs-sphagnum-moss besgrow.com/whats-the-difference-between-spagmoss-and-peat-moss-the-environment/
I was scared of snakes before I started keeping them, too. They’re not hard to take care of at all other than the fact that they can be finicky eaters sometimes. 😊
It really does depend on what type of ball python morph you are looking for and what gender, I personally wouldn’t recommend looking for the cheapest sit only because they could be so cheap cause they don’t treat their reptiles correctly and such. I really recommend going to a reptile expo instead as your able to get that one on one connection with the ability to ask more questions and see the snake up close and personal before purchasing, but if your buying offline I recommend watching other people unbox theirs and see we’re they got theirs, I hope this helps!

I breed boas and I use Steralite tubs and cypress mulch that I get at Home Depot,....... a 56L bag for about $4...
The ring light reflecting off your eyes make iit look like you have halo contacts lol took me a bit to realize that 😅
This lady is so pretty and has such a great accent!
@@ellesreptiles Okay thank you 😄 I really appreciate it!! (First time owner here 😅)
The accent hit me like a brick
Omg same lol
Great video!
Thank you! 😊
Elle's Reptiles you’re welcome
Nice video!
Thank you! 😊
Where do you put the hydrometer? Does it go in the side somewhere or outside of it?
You should never used distilled water because it doesn’t have any of the minerals the snakes need
Thank you! I was just about to comment this.
Yea, sorry, that was a mistake on my part that I didn't catch during editing. But I corrected myself in the description 😊
You done did kill your snake
Is it okay to use a reptile Matt for the floor instead of getting substatight I’m planning on getting a ball python soon and was wondering
She did a good video many don't do
Great video!!
Do you not use a light or che? That is the last thing I need to help keep temperature and dont know what to buy.
Also love the video very helpful with the amazon links!
Could u do this same type of vid for a bearded dragon🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
I actually have! 😊

I feel like it would be really cool to do a video of how much money you spend within a month of taking care of all your animals!!
I heard distilled water is no good? it lacks the minerals they may? need from the water so ill use bottled water. Going to get a ball python soon.
Correct! I meant purified (and corrected it in the description box 😅) Sorry about that!
Hey now 🦎👀's, Weights look AWESOME on top of the tank! Especially when your tank is in your weight room 🏋🏾♂️😉.
Initial not including pet - $100 (thrift shops are your friend)
Annually - $75 (50 frozen from expo, substrate)
Oh, your personal experience will vary.
Haha in a weight room it 100% would look awesome. And yes! Thrift stores and craigslist/facebook marketplace are awesome for money saving. I forgot to mention that in the video, but it’s in the description.
$75 a year isn’t bad at all 😊
I love your accent. And my BP cost me about 200 dollars plus her set up 😓😓
Awesome video! :)
Thank you Jeremy! 😁
Thanks
what about feeding the snake chicken eggs?
I think I remember someone doing that wen I was little. Eggs from the grocery store would be cheaper than rats.
Is it ok if I have two water dishes
Why two? 1 is fine, just leave it on the cool side
1 water dish and 2 hides
I don’t understand why heat pads don’t just come with thermostats together straight away
Same here. It would make so much sense.
I didn’t get the notification for this!
Oh no! That’s weird. Notifications are all over the place 😕
How much does cost your Ball phyton
I really want a ball python or corn snake but unfortunately my mom is terrified. Any tips for convincing her to let me get one?
The best advice I can give is to show her lots of videos of them. Most people are afraid of what they don’t understand. I used to be scared of them too! But constantly watching videos of them really helped. Going to reptile expos helped as well! Good luck! 😊
Elle's Reptiles okay, thank you so much!!
How'd things go
Love your accent
Thank you! 😊
Hello I was wondering can u use led light for the lighting ?
Are your eyes legit just black and white with white rings around your pupils? Trippy
That snake just be chillin
It’s the smile and the eyes for me😍
I'm looking at the light reflection in here eyes lol
I found out if they bite and won't let go spraying vinegar in their mouth will get them to let go and can train them not to bite cuz they will know if they do they will get the vinegar in there mouth
Yep, or you can also just squeeze their tail and they'll let go. Not hard enough to cause damage of course. 😊
Elle's Reptiles awesome thanks for replying :) x
Im going to get a ball python soon, but is it fine to just "only" use coconut faber for substrate? I would like to know (-: I want my snake to be happy
Rebecca - you can use only coconut, but if you want some more volume in your tank you can get normal tree fabor
Mine was so cheap, but very high maintenance as I got my snake from a chain petstore and was not ok :(
The round lamp in your eyes look kinda cool... and kinda scary...
Awesome channel dont like snakes but I can tolerate them after this video lol
Awww that’s awesome! 😁
for smaller or baby ball python they need smaller enclosures as they can feel unsafe in large enclosures
Ty for helping I am getting won soon and I want it to have the best home 🏠❤️
Where u get your rats tho? Plz
yay! I have enough money for a ball python!!! ive been saving up! and now I can get one!!! eeeeeeeekkkkkk!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Awesome! Congrats! 😊
Anyway hopefully these resources will help:

Okay, thank so much, love ur channel btw 😝
I bought one it she’s wonderful I love her so much
That’s so awesome. Congrats! 😊
Those are the absolute most beautiful teeth that I have ever seen
My gosh..... she is soooo freaking gorgeous
Owning ONE snake cost pennies....its when you have over 20 that it starts to get expensive !
Roger Moore Nah One doesn’t cost pennies!! Where I live these Rats Get Very Expensive...I’m paying Almost $15 for mine
The Jones Family I pay like $2 a mouse but my snake is only half grown so
@Roccompany NO WORRIES...You’ll be paying for Rats Soon!! Just wait until you buy one and Your snake REFUSES it 😳🤦♂️
@@allgasnobrakes919 well if u feed frozen you can get 499 mice for like 23 bucks
i’m getting one very soon :))))
Yay! Early congrats! 😁🎉
I want a snake but i always been scared of them also are they hard to take care of?
I was scared of snakes before I started keeping them, too. They’re not hard to take care of at all other than the fact that they can be finicky eaters sometimes. 😊
Hi, can you make the same video with a rosy boa?
i want a call python so bad but i’m so nervous i don’t think i’m responsible enough
Hello! I was wondering what some good cheap sites for buying ball pythons are. Any help is welcome!
It really does depend on what type of ball python morph you are looking for and what gender, I personally wouldn’t recommend looking for the cheapest sit only because they could be so cheap cause they don’t treat their reptiles correctly and such. I really recommend going to a reptile expo instead as your able to get that one on one connection with the ability to ask more questions and see the snake up close and personal before purchasing, but if your buying offline I recommend watching other people unbox theirs and see we’re they got theirs, I hope this helps!
ur the fukin bomb. thank you.
DAM YOU IS FIIIIIIIIIIINE
Hey, I really love ball pythons and I’m trying to convince my mom to get me one. I have all the money needed and the only thing I don’t know how to do is convince her. I’ve done lots of research and I’m wondering if you could help me with some tips on how I could convince her to let me get one.
I had the same issue but with my dad. I recommend showing one to two good RUclips videos about snakes, give them some info and facts about them showing that you did your research and they are harmless and easy to care for. A video I would recommend showing them is from a channel called embers ball pythons. I would show your mom their video titled “5 reasons to own a ball python” I am getting my first ball python in a week after I have been wanting and not allowed to have one for 5 years. I am buying mine from embers ball pythons. Good luck!
Can You use coco fiber
