One Page Rules is another place to look for a rule set that can be played in quite a straight forward way. Thanks for the ideas here.

Step 1: put them through college to get a doctorate to afford Warhammer

      😂 ohhhh ploy so true.
My boys paint a single miniature within about 10 minutes.
They shout “Finished! …. Dad, can I paint another one?”
      Expensive hobby, indeed !
Because now they don’t want to paint any old crappy plastic soldier, or dinosaur from the toybox.
They want a proper Warhammer miniature to paint !
      What have I started?! 😬

Great video. Like you, i too am a wargaming dad. My youngest two who are 7 & 4. As you say, a slow and steady introduction into gaming, making and painting is the way to do it.
My lads love painting. When it comes to gaming, Black Seas was our gateway game. Its a great game.i simplified the rules a bit, blue sheet down, a few rocks and stick some pirate flags on top of those lovely ships and we were away. Really good fun. Its a great hobby to share with your kids. Enjoy😊

You may want to look at Oathmark for fantasy. It's a simpler rule set than Warhammer fantasy. I have three boys that play it with me. My five year old daughter is already clamouring for a goblin army. I am glad you were able to find something to engage your sons.

    My boys similar ages 8 & 6….
My 8 yr old loves it, but 6 yr old after a while, does not have the patience.
So you are far more ambitious than I’ve been.
My getting into the hobby purely started because I wanted a Board game of some type that we could all play and enjoy on a rainy day. And I remembered playing hero quest as a boy in the 80s. But I never even considered to actually attempt to play using proper rules.
I went off and using hero request as a template, designed my own set of rules. Including features that are myself would want in the game, but also having used the hero quest template for exploration and combat, it keeps things fairly accessible, fast moving, and importantly, relatively easy to understand.
My goodness, I can’t even imagine trying to learn Warhammer fantasy battles myself, Let alone trying to explain it to my kids.
My own advancement into the hobby, I’ve been looking at advanced hero quest, and also silver bayonet - as way to perhaps migrate from pure Board game, dungeon crawler, to perhaps setting up some of our terrain to explore skirmish wargaming.
And the skirmish war gaming, appealed with regards to potentially having a relatively low set up time .
That said I’ve yet to really dig into the rules of silver bayonet, and a simulate them myself.
As great as this hobby, new to me, has proved to be, it is time-consuming.
And if I was to have one criticism of the hobby so far, it’s the setup that sometimes puts you off.
Because it takes time to set up, it takes time to clear it all up.
Ohhhh that we would have a spare room in the house - where I could have a dedicated war gaming room! That would certainly be wonderful 😊

Oh I completely agree, I’m so lucky to have a permanent set up.

Great video Stu. Loved this one. My love of miniatures came from my Dad's old DnD metal minis.
Don't have kids of my own yet, but as an ex teacher of 18years... its so refreshing to see children being encouraged to try new things and find a passion. You would not believe how much in my career I had seen children being shunned with tablets, phones and xboxs.
You nailed the point towards the end: To show pride and positivity with the hobby, that it is okay to do it. Growing up in the 80's and 90's, the hobby had such a negative stigma attached to it. Personally, i was ashamed of doing it until i hit my 30's.
Thankfully, not such a stigma anymore.
Whether your children stick with it or not, at least they have been taught to respect it and there is nothing wrong with doing it ❤ and they had some fun and life lessons along the way.
Great video. Kudos for being brave enough to show your family too.

Very cool video Stu. I laughed when you mentioned about your youngest cheating his way to victory. I know my boy loves to win and really dislikes the idea of not winning. Even with a small race if I come first he will still confidently state he won. I imagine all kids start out this way before learning the art of not needing to win all the time.
I had a thought too that the original space crusade game could be decent for younger gamers. It has been many years since I played but I remember it has relatively simple rules and was played in about the same area as a standard board game (since effectively that’s what it was). I think I have a couple of copies in the garage. I bought extra since it came with “minis” that are pretty close to 40k minis albeit not as detailed, though part of that is the age of the game

That’s a great idea with Space Crusade, I really enjoyed it myself as a teen (after Heroquest kicked it all off), you should definitely give it a go with your lad and report back. I may have to see what they go for on eBay these days.

I think this might be your greatest video ever. I don't have children of my own, but when I was a kid my Dad encouraged me to always be around models and miniatures. He took me to a Games Workshop waaay back when I was about 12 years old (1983!)
If not for him introducing me to the world of gluing stuff together and painting them I might never have caught the bug.
To see your sons at such a young age actually sitting down and modeling and painting on that level and on to an actual skirmish game is nothing short of uplifting!
YOU sir are one of the coolest Dads on earth. This kind of parenthood is what will ground your boys with purpose and give them an interest that could potentially last a lifetime!

I don’t use a huge amount of Citadel paint outside of Contrast, so the stuff I have tends to last a while. But I’ve not noticed anything myself.

    • @MiniatureRealms
      @MiniatureRealms  Месяц назад

Yeah not really a game for pre-teens, even young teens would need quite a bit of help. Definitely easier to start than some things, but not nearly as simplistic as some people who don’t like ‘it’ (whatever flavour of Warhammer) may think.
