    Hey David, I'm here in Eastern Tennessee. I have Your feeding board. With the heat wave coming the next few weeks, is it a good idea to feed 1:1 sugar water in one spot and plain water in the other spot so the bees can use it for cooling? Will they actually use the plain water on top for cooling? Thank you for all the content you provide. It helps all of us new beekeepers A LOT! 🐝

    Regarding equalizing, did you say we could move frames with bees on it to a weaker colony? No issues with fighting?

  • @animeniac978
    @animeniac978 16 дней назад

    I've heard stories of clusters which perished over the winter with plenty of food available, because they couldn't traverse the barrier created by the top bar of the lower frames and the bottom bar of the upper deep's frames. Now that we have rigid plastic foundation, something Langstroth didn't have available, once we've installed plastic foundation, maybe with the assistance of epoxy, is there a reason not to cut out 6 inches of the top and bottom bars to make the trip easier for bees in a cluster?

    • @beek
      @beek  16 дней назад

      I haven't had or seen my bees not traversing the barrier as it's not really a full inch.

    David, I didn’t get to watch the video Thursday but I watched it Friday. I have a question. I know you put a freshwater sauce out there for the bees to take. What do you think of I have a pond 15 yards away from my hives. Do you think that’s enough water, Charlie PA

    • @beek
      @beek  14 дней назад

    They have these drone traps now to capture drones out of your hives. Just a thought. How would it affect your mite tests if you caught drones for mite washes? I have a feeling it would actually skew the results of the mite test.

    • @beek
      @beek  14 дней назад

      Exactly, not sure of the calculation to determine the level of infestation.

    • @PresidentBust
      @PresidentBust 14 дней назад

      if i may suggest. Its a bit of a more costly approach for the first couple of tries. Do a regular mite test, and do this new one. You'll gain a pretty decent ratio of how to measure after 2 or 3 hives are tested. Please share the number with us :D

    You said you can equalize your colony by bringing a frame of bees to another colony. Will the bees kill the queen if the colony is weak that your bringing it to? Thanks!!

    • @BackBeeBrokenBeekeeping
      @BackBeeBrokenBeekeeping 19 дней назад

      MOST bees on the frames are nurse bees, especially if you pull that frame during the mid day on a sunny day. Nurse bees are somewhat neutral from what I understand and less "cranky" so they tend to adapt to the new queen very easily.

  • @Mighty2107
    @Mighty2107 19 дней назад

    What quantities should I feed my bees? I think I killed my hive because I overfed them and they filled the comb and the queen didn't have anywhere to lay eggs and she left. 2 requeening attempts failed also.

    • @beek
      @beek  14 дней назад

      You can certainly monitor how much of your feed the bees are storing and if you see they are storing too much you can stop feeding to allow the queen more room.

    • @Mighty2107
      @Mighty2107 14 дней назад

      @@beek Unfortunately I am only able to visit them once a week and in that one week I overfed them and destroyed my colony. Better luck next time

    I’m so bad about taking notes from one hive to the next hive. Then when I go back the next week I forget what I did from the week before. Do you have any suggestions on how to keep me on track to keep notes from one hive to the next

    • @BackBeeBrokenBeekeeping
      @BackBeeBrokenBeekeeping 19 дней назад

      A simple free way I do this is immediately after my inspection, while everything is still fresh in my mind I enter the information into a spread sheet. You can set it up where each hive has its own tab and you can have columns for date, notes etc... Another simple way you can keep everything in your memory is just record your inspection on your phone, then when you are done replay the video and take notes. Just speak out loud everything you are seeing so the camera picks it up even if you don't get a good video shot of it. You could also take a dictation recorder out with you and just speak what you are seeing/thinking as you inspect

      I put a strip of blue painters tape on the outer cover. Use your sharpie to jot notes when you put the lid on.

      I video a report on my phone after each hive opened. Then write on a record sheet. Also a laminated card popped under the the lid with notes is good
