  • A shaving horse is a foot operated vise often used in green woodworking such as chair or rake making. After doing a video over on the Black Bear Forge channel where I used the shaving horse to make a handle. This shaving horse was made by Mark Hicks at Plate 11 www.plate11.co...

Have a draw horse that I made about 20 years ago from an old 150 year old barn beam. Very useful tool for making handles and walking sticks.

An old barn beam would have some real character and it's own story to tell. Pretty cool.

A drawknife or a spokeshave isn't complete without a shaving horse. Nice review of plate 11. I haven't met him, but I'm aware of and admire his work. I live within 10 miles. Amazing what is hidden close by!

I made a very simple one years ago, then turned it into a portable bench rest for sighting in muskets. Brings back memories. I still enjoy doing things the old way, but sometimes I cheat if the project lasts too long. **It appears you had one of Roy's videos running on the monitor on the right.

Great job on this video. Good in-depth info and just enough info on the other video to answer questions yet get on with the topic at hand. 👍. 💜🌞🌵

That fancy, the only ones I've seen in person were much more primitive. Thanks for sharing.

Another difference is the way you’ve placed your foot controls. Yours is upside down from the one shown on his website. Good info. Thank you.

I was going to make my own out of scrap lumber I have around here. I have been looking at all kinds of designs. I like this one but my problem is I have very little room to store a shave horse because I would rarely use one. Then by accident I found pictures of a shave pony which I am going to make. Basically it is just the top part that goes on the work bench and I pull my stool up to it. But I am sure you know that. :)

I have seen some workbench mounted shaving horse style clamps. It sounds like a pretty good option

Just a quick suggestion. Talk to Mark. Offer to make draw knives, spokeshaves, bench dogs, hold-fasts, chisels, in short, hand forged woodworking tools and accessories for him to sell on his “Plate 11 website. You could do the same on your website.
Boy, he makes some good benches and accessories.

Thanks for the info. I certainly understand the balance of time, money, and skill. As Craftsman we all want to do everything ourselves, but it's not always practical. Thanks again for the informative video.

I'd love one of these, but smaller. Very envious of your setup.

Thanks John like the shaving horse, would love one, but as I don't have a shed and am renting, not gonna happen. So I'll just have to use me old vice, it works good.
