I LOVE that Behringer did this and I'll be buying one. All that I'm saying is ARP had a spring reverb in the 2600 back in 1972. Roland put effects in the D-50 in 1987. A good simple sounding reverb and delay's all I'am saying would have been nice.

I have to check this. I am currently diving into that Synth too. I am learning a lot about it. I have never owned an original OB-Xa. You can also double the upper and lower keyboard sound and play them together with one key. I haven't shown this in the video.
Ralph, thank you, for your first Impression. It sounds really good, but i think, everything with strymon sounds, very good. It would be very interresting for me, to here more about the UBXA from you. 👍 Greetings Guido
Hi Guido, since I have never owned a polyphonic Oberheim before, I have to "learn" that Synth a bit too ;-) Currently I am thinking how to divide everything into easily digestible chapters suitable for beginners. Many thanks for watching and commenting, Ralph
🎹That would be great Ralph only preordered this beast and yes sounds amazing, bringing" Music To The Masses "as DM did back in the day 😊at such a great price point, looking forward to your series ! 👍
You have made the right choice to have it preordered. The more I play with it the more I love it. Such good value. Thank a lot for watching my content! Cheers, Ralph
Hi Ralph. I'd definitely be interested in your tutorials for the UB-Xa, the ones for the 2600 were very useful. I got my UB-Xa just before Christmas and love playing around with it, but would need some hints on the advanced programming. Also, I haven't figured out how to put the Sysex banks and patches back into the machine yet. I'm hoping they come up with some editor similar to the DeepMind, to help managed the patches.
Thanks for your feedback! I am also still getting acquainted with the UB-Xa. So many things to learn about this beast. I never owned an original polyphonic Synth from Oberheim. So, I also have kind of a learning curve ahead of me 😉 Thanks also for watching my 2600 content. Glad you find it useful.
If only the OB6 had 61 keys and more polyphony…. This is the first demo I’ve heard that gives me enough of that OB vibe to make me think maybe this is in the ballpark. They did a good job nailing the way the oscillators beat on OB synths. And the overall tone. But there is still something off about the resonance to me. Doesn’t quite hit like the OBX8. Would love to see a side by side of those.
Thanks for your comment! I agree, it would be amazing if the OB6 had 61 keys and more polyphony. Guess the UB-Xa is now filling that void ;-) It's always interesting to compare different synths and see how they stack up against each other. Unfortunately I never owned an original OB-Xa, OBX8 etc, but only the monophonic OB-1. Perhaps one day I will make VCF comparison between the UB-Xa and the OB-1.
Ralph rawks! Loved his 2600 videos (bought one) and struggling deciding on this or waiting for the TEO-5. One request Ralph, could you add text for the patches you’re playing? If it’s not too much trouble. Labeled Factory Preset or Custom? Thanks!
Hi there, since this was my first UB-Xa video I do not remember exactly how I created all these sounds. But usually I started with a preset and then altered/adjusted the sounds from there. The TEO-5 is a nice Synth with some features that the UB-Xa lacks, but bear in mind that it has only 5 voice polyphony. Cheers, Ralph
Definitely 👍 Check out Behringer's website for all the specifications of the UB-Xa. You can select modes to simulate various vintage Oberheim models. Greetings, Ralph
Thanks for a good introduction to this. I would love to see a tutorial when you get to know all the tricks and whistles. Some questions: Does the audio output "Left Hand" output the lower split part and the "Right Hand" output the upper split part? This would be great because then effects can be added individually. Like something for bass sound like pingpong delay and something else like chorus for the pads. The mono out is of course left and right hand summed but not really useful in split mode. Is there USB audio? I really think that is the only thing missing on all these modern clones. Getting the audio into your daw directly via usb would be so sweet. How is the knob quality, looks a bit plasticky but the rest look quite good. Please also try out the atrophe modes. RUclips warriors keep saying that this thing doesn't sound at all like a 40year aged version. I guess the youtube audio compression isn't good either. Looking for a polyaftertouch keybed there are few. Hydrasynths, korg keystage and this. Would love to hear how these 3 compare in quality. I am not impressed with the fatar in my Sub37 signature, that is not worthy of moog. Looking forward to future videos. I learned a lot from the 2600 series
Hello there, you can set the voice panning according to your preferences. Regarding USB Audio I haven't heard anything about this yet. Perhaps Behringer is going to introduce this feature with a firmware update. The knobs feel really good and solid in my personal opinion, although not as strong as on my vintage Oberheim OB-1. Thanks for watching my content. It's highly appreciated! Greetings, Ralph
The fact that this is two OB clone in one synth without loss of poly is a great feature over the original which might sound slightly 'better' than this but in practicality and live performance this will win. will be interesting to play with atrophy presets to make sound more according to one's taste. I think you meant to say the 'cloud" algo on Strymon instead shimmer which isn't often very useful but nice to have.
You are right, I could have been more clear. I meant the Shimmer setting within the Cloud preset. Anyway the 16 voice UB-Xa is extremely good value. Thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts.
I really thought Behringer had missed the boat when I gave up waiting and bought a DX7 IID to be my master synth keyboard, but this is the first synth to get me genuinely excited since I got the Roland AE-30 wind synth. ...and I'm not particularly into polysynths!
I think this sounds amazing--does it sound like an OB X whatever? I don't know... maybe it does maybe it doesn't. The important thing is to make music. And speaking of music, @RalphBaumgartl would you consider making a patch bank of these patches and selling them? I would gladly buy it, when I get my own UB Xa
Thank you so much for your kind words! I'm glad you think the sound is amazing. Making music is definitely the most important thing, regardless of the specific sound. I am still getting acquainted with the UB-Xa and then I will evaluate the patches that I am coming up with. Creating and selling patches for the UB-Xa is something that I am thinking about. Greetings, Ralph
I couldn’t help but smile at 12:08 at the Edward Grieg theme you played. I’m curious, Ralph. Have you ever played the original OB-Xa from 1981? Your command of the UB-Xa suggests familiarity with the classic.
I have dabbled with the original OB-Xa only once on my life and that was at the Frankfurt Music Trade Show back in 1982. A very long time ago 😉 Thanks for watching my video. Cheers, Ralph
My pleasure, Ralph. The closest I’ve been to the Continent itself was looking across the English channel from the cliffs of Dover to the northern coast of France. If I thought I could overcome my fear of language barriers, I would love going there for Musik Messe.
I am currently working on a beginner tutorial for the UB-Xa. Something like my 2600 Starter Video. With all the Shift Functions of the UB-Xa beginners run the risk of getting a bit lost....
Not really luck....I have been checking the online store of a retailer here in Germany for weeks several times per day. When the UB-Xa became available I ordered it right away :-) Thanks for your support!
I will buy this synth. I Like the Behringer synth-stuff (and mixing consoles). But what I already heard, it sounds not so fat in comparison to the original. But €😊1300 for this synth is a great offer!
It's definitely a great offer. Customers always have the option to go for the new Oberheim OBX8 if they think the sound of an original Oberheim is fatter. Nowadays everyone has the option to buy the Synth that is up to her/his individual preferences. Thanks for watching!
Youll be able to get the ub-xa and the pro16 (prophet 10 clone coming) for less than one obxa or prophet 10. And they'll sound great. Gigging musicians will love it. Guys using backline, doctors and lawyers etc can afford the originals without a ton of saving
So glad they made this. Some a hole in Minnesota stole mine off eBay by making a fake claim and PayPal refunded them 100% of the money. A piece of my soul has been restored 🖤
@@RalphBaumgartl it was a nightmare situation. Sold it to the guy and then he claimed 4 keys didn’t work. Which I knew could be possible, but I serviced it before I even listed it. I said okay fine, invoice me for a repair and I’ll pay it. The guy didn’t bother he filed a dispute with PayPal for a refund. And insanely PayPal refunded him without him even sending it back and I never got my money or my synth back. But anyways that’s what I was trying to say. So all these years later knowing I can get this clone of its sister synth for about a 4th of the price is awesome.
@SpikedCollar666 Sad story! That's why I sell Synths only for personal collection. I want the buyer to check the Synth personally before they buy it. Anyway you will have the UBXa then....😉
That you need to use external effects says enough.... Behringer could have made a nice effects section for this synth. I wait for the MS-5. Also the Prophet 16 will be presented this year I guess. I am making trancy music and I must say that my Novation sounds the best for trancy music. Behringer produces and it's nice each one of us can choose those synths which he/she likes. I have already 11 Behringer synths and will buy those which are an enrichment for my synth collection. That's the primal parameter that I use to add a new synth. greetings from Belgium Jason
Almost sounds like a software synth in this video. Does Ralph mute his headset mic and have iso record lines or is this similar case to Andertons video issues on this same product?
@@RalphBaumgartl that’s good. Yeah might be the effects. Either way I preordered mine last month from Andertons. I’m located in the US so no warranty applies buying from abroad. Come to find out an US shop got them quicker. Might cancel the Andertons order and grab from a US shop.
@@ryanwilson2481 It seems that people have very subjective opinions about the UB-Xa. The other day I read a post in an online forum that the user thinks the keybed feels "somewhat cheap". In my personal opinion the Keybed feels high quality.
Cheers, Ralph

For me, it's undeniable, this synthesizer will be part of my set up. Unfortunately I didn't have the opportunity to buy it when it came out, very quickly it was out of stock, but I wouldn't miss the next batch. Excellent video!!!
Thanks for watching my video. You may have the option to choose between the Desktop and the Keyboard version of the UB-Xa. That's the advantage of being late to the UB-Xa party 😉 Cheers, Ralph
I hade the OB-Xa, it was a rather bulky instrument, its size determined by the size of its voicecards. What is actually under the hood of this instrument, what does it look like when opened up? What is actually the tech at the root of Behringer instruments? I guess its not based on the CEM3340 ;) One can´t help but wonder how the UB Xa compares to the modern Oberheim OB-X8. I just realized you have a classical education at the core, the Rachmaninov C#minor Prelude didn´t go unnoticed :)
I have not opened the UB-Xa yet. But according to Behringer their new chips are based on the original 3340 and 3320 chip designs. Check out Behringer's website and Facebook page where you will find more information about the UB-Xa development and production process. You will also find images of opened UB-Xa's.
@@noisetheorem _"As I understand, Uli is making his own clones of the CEM chips"_ There are two actual manufacturers out there producing CEM-like ICs. They are CoolAudo which is a fabless subsidiary of Music Tribe (Behringer) and ALFA RPAR AS in Latvia that has their own semiconductor process. Both are unauthorised manufacturers of CEM cause all those Curtis patents are gone quite awhile ago and those 40-years old ICs aren't a big deal to reverse engineer nowadays. I utilised Coolaudio V3320 VCFs in my 1U 19" rack LinnDrum recreation. They work ok but constantly dissipate a substantial amount of power like any analogue stuff usually does. From a common sense point of view analogue synthesizers are just BS in XXI century but unlike let's say Roland, Yamaha, Waldorf etc, Behringer doesn't have any innovative technology on hand so that makes them limited yet unable to come up with anything decent apart from 40-year old antique yet obvious things.
@@MSM5500Well not only that the demand for 40-50 year old antique is there and making money regardless of what anyone thinks. If Model D reissues were a £1000 to buy new . The manufacturing would have to go limited due to the still very hot demand. Thou I hear what your saying . Hence and queue digital technology.
My gut feeling is that Behringer will release a firmware update for the UB-Xa soon after they have read all the customer feedback in various online forums....
You can buy 2 UB-Xa's for the price of 1 Rev 2 nowadays. But the Rev 2 is a more flexible synth, while it probably doesn't sound as great as the UB-Xa. Of course you could add a couple of Pro-800's to your UB-Xa, The Pro-800 sounds awesome as well, and covers the prophet sound in a great way! Choices choices eh?
Since I have never owned an original OB-Xa before, I am still in the process to learn the Ins and Outs of the Behringer UB-Xa myself. In my personal opinion the Behringer Synths are all top notch, but on the manual side there's still much room for improvement 😉
I use for work (oa The voice) a Roland Jupiter x, i was free to choice and i select because the soundquality. A Behringer you will find it quick 2e hands as ALL of their products
I guess all retailers and online stores have long delivery times now. Most people who already have their UB-Xa were very quick to order their Synth....
@@RalphBaumgartl I ordered one too from sweetwater. They’re saying may before it’s available. No SEM filter in the ubxa… hum. That eliminates a lot of sounds.
@@danielcolfer4671 May 2024 is indeed a long delivery time. The VCF in my Oberheim OB-1 has a different kind of punch, but in my personal opinion the UB-Xa also has its own unique sound which I consider just as good....
@danielcolfer4671 The ubx a is based on the obx a" not obx which was the first oberheim poly. They had different filters. Seems Europe are getting their shipments first. I've not ordered one yet as I'm still umming and arrhing lol
In this video I was using the "UB-Xa" profile. There's also a "OB-8" profile which sounds a bit more like an Oberheim. But that's just my personal opinion/perception.
@@playonkorg I see 😃 I have a B2600, Gray Meanie, Blue Marvin and a couple of 2500 Eurorack modules. No issues whatsoever so far. From my personal experience I don't expect any issues with the UB-Xa. And finally, I don't plan to sell my Behringer gear. I rather make music with it 😃
The only people who have a problem with the Behringer UB-XA are the cork sniffers that don't like the idea that other people have access to a wonderful synth that used to cost a fortune. Now that the cork sniffers have a synth that cost much less compared to their older machines. It makes the value of their synths go down because people now have a choice! We now hear anger, envy and complaints that the UB-XA doesn't sound the same. I said that 2 years ago. I knew that when this synth was released to the public, the owners of the original were going to throw everything they had at the wall just to complain and see what sticks. Well, im sorry but your weak argument that "The UB-XA just doesn't sound the same" is bull crap! Please get a life and try to find something positive that you can do with your spare time. Your opinion means exactly NOTHING. It's too easy to see your anger behind everything you say. Now I'm going to go off and enjoy my UB-XA. Nothing you say can change that for all of us new UB-XA owners!
I never owned an original polyphonic Oberheim and I am very happy with the UB-Xa. Let me add that I have an original ARP 2600 and yes the Behringer 2600 sounds a bit different. So what, I like the sound of the B2600 too! I have the orange/black B2600, the Gray Meanie and the Blue Marvin and I am happy with all of them and their characteristics. Most important is to create some stuff with the gear you have and like. Cheers, Ralph
@RalphBaumgartl Thank you, Ralph! Exactly! No matter what you have, if it is analog and if you line up 3 of the exact same machines, they will all sound slightly different! It's a fact of life. Analog components are all slightly different from each other. That alone makes them sound different. I would guarantee if you were able to fit the components of an OB-XA into a UB-XA, people would say the OB-XA still sounds better than the UB-XA simply because they see it that way. Your eyes will deceive you! The main thing you said was great! No matter what gear you have, create great music with the gear you have! You can't argue with a beautiful product. No matter how it has been made.
Thanks for sharing your perspective as an OBX8 owner! It's always interesting to hear different opinions on the sound of a particular instrument. I never owned an OB-Xa or OB-X8, just an OB-1 and the sound of it has something very special. I can imagine that OB-Xa owners feel the same.
But this is a clone of the old one, not of the OB-X8, there are comparisons out there and it sounds close enough it seems. But to really have an informed opinion, we may need to try it by ourselves.
I've never owned the OG, but tend to agree (on YT videos anyway) sounds a bit generic, not having that timeless bite & sizzle of Tom's OB-Xa. Defo need to play it in the shop with pro-audio headphones to judge standalone..... 🤔🎹🎵🇬🇧🍻
Hello. I am absolutely agreed with you. It is very good sounding synth especially from Beringer, but it sounds not like Oberheim model. but I'm sure that behringer is moving in the right direction and the hour is not long before they can make a real splash in the synthesizer industry
I got to the end of the video and didn't hear any mindblowing sounds...did you mean this video or one that doesn't feature a behringer? Behringer did not make improvements on the classic. They made something that is aesthetically a copy and sonically a disaster. 16:23 are you serious? Do you realize what that sound would sound like from a real Oberheim? Dull, lifeless UBXa.
@@RalphBaumgartl sarcasm. So many people do nothing but brag about what they have. I was making fun of them. I wouldn't have a problem owning anything and I could make music on all of it.👍
@thesimulations8900 I am not quite sure how you want me to construe your comment, but I would also say that making "your individual style" of music on whatever gear you have at your disposal is what counts....
@@RalphBaumgartl you should construe it as a sarcastic joke because that's what it was. RUclips is full of non stop braggers who think if you don't own some vintage, magic, full of mojo blah blah blah, then you're not making real music. They are silly and I can make some type of music on most anything. Behringer are awesome for people without insane disposable income(myself included).👍
@thesimulations8900 that's what I thought. I just wanted to make sure that my interpretation was correct. The (Synth) RUclips scene can be pretty hostile sometimes. 😉 Anyway, regarding music I have the conviction that any instrument goes....the user/artist/musician can use anything she/he likes. Most importantly, she/he creates something with it 😃
Years ago i asked on a synth forum why manufacturers cant just remake the analog classics. I was laughed at basically. Too expensive, obsolete parts, nobody would buy them etc.

I subbed for the 2600 tutorials, and as ive got one on preorder, id love some ubxa ones as well!
Thanks for your feedback and for your support! Glad you watched my 2600 stuff too. 🙏
Sounds great! Could you recreate the sounds of the 80's that used the original synthesizer, would the UB-Xa be worth it?
Definitely 👍 Check out Behringer's website for all the specifications of the UB-Xa. You can select modes to simulate various vintage Oberheim models. Greetings, Ralph
Thanks for a good introduction to this. I would love to see a tutorial when you get to know all the tricks and whistles.
Some questions:
Does the audio output "Left Hand" output the lower split part and the "Right Hand" output the upper split part?
Hallo mein Freund Ralph!
Should be great a tutorial serie about the UB-Xa!
Thanks for watching and for your kind feedback!
The entire Synth feels so high quality that it can easily be a master Keyboard/Synth for anyone Music enthusiast.
@@RalphBaumgartl it's got me wondering whether I really need my digital piano or whether this could sit next to the Yamaha in its place! 😀
@@Shred_The_Weapon Forget Musik Messe. Nowadays it's Superbooth in Berlin. And you will get around by speaking English 😃
Wirklich eine ausgezeichnete Maschine
Genauso ist es! Deluxe!
I'm hoping for a tutorial video for the ub-xa! I just got one. Though it is simpler than the 2600, it would be nice to see someone take a deep dive.
I am currently working on a beginner tutorial for the UB-Xa. Something like my 2600 Starter Video. With all the Shift Functions of the UB-Xa beginners run the risk of getting a bit lost....
lucky guy well deserved! Keep synthing!
Totally agree with you! Many thanks for watching! Greetings, Ralph
Very nice demo
Thank you 🙏 Glad you like it.
It sounds great. Would like a series about the Behringer UB-Xa indeed :)
Thank you! Appreciate your feedback!
So glad they made this. Some a hole in Minnesota stole mine off eBay by making a fake claim and PayPal refunded them 100% of the money. A piece of my soul has been restored 🖤
Who is selling the UB-Xa on Ebay?
@@RalphBaumgartlI had an ob8 that I sold on eBay like 11 years ago.
@@SpikedCollar666 Ok, understood!
Hello Jason, there's no "need" to add external effects. It's a voluntary choice! 😉
Hello Ralph.
A Tutorial about the UB-Xa would be really nice 😃
Thanks a lot for your feedback!
Split Keyboards Option... 😍
Yes, that's great! Like having two Synths in one Box!
Apparently it was still enough for you to judge the sound of the UB-Xa. Thanks for watching!
Almost sounds like a software synth in this video. Does Ralph mute his headset mic and have iso record lines or is this similar case to Andertons video issues on this same product?
When it's Synth sound only the mic is muted.
VG Ralph

For me, it's undeniable, this synthesizer will be part of my set up. Unfortunately I didn't have the opportunity to buy it when it came out, very quickly it was out of stock, but I wouldn't miss the next batch.
Excellent video!!!
Thanks for watching my video. You may have the option to choose between the Desktop and the Keyboard version of the UB-Xa. That's the advantage of being late to the UB-Xa party 😉 Cheers, Ralph

Thank you for your reply, I have set my sights on the keyboard version. 🙂
Good video. 😀👍
Thanks a lot 🙏
As I understand, Uli is making his own clones of the CEM chips.
@@noisetheorem _"As I understand, Uli is making his own clones of the CEM chips"_
There are two actual manufacturers out there producing CEM-like ICs.
@@noisetheorem He bought Cool Audio a few years ago, they're considered as close as anyone's going to get.
Needs 'Catch Up' on knob movements.... probably an OS update coming on that (?).
My gut feeling is that Behringer will release a firmware update for the UB-Xa soon after they have read all the customer feedback in various online forums....
gr8 sounds...
I'm glad you think they're gr8! I worked really hard to find the perfect sounds for this video.
O played an OB-X8....and just got the Ub-xa...I prefer the UB-Xa sound wise.
More and more people are falling in love with the UB-Xa.... ;-)
Should I get this, or a Rev2?
This you have to decide for yourself... ;-)

No matter how it has been made.
all the hype not a patch on waldorf syths sounds just like lots of synths
Well, sometimes all the hype can be a bit overwhelming! But hey, who doesn't love a good synth sound?
As an OBX8 owner this does not sound like an Oberheim to me. sounds ok but it's no oberheim.
