    We are still trying to finish putting in plants! Cold nights in zone 6 have kept it from happening until a couple of weeks ago. It's okay. They will grow.

    I don't understand why not one gardening channel ever talks about speckled butterbeans. They are so expensive at our farmers market. And the frozen ones are not good at all. 🙏🇺🇸🌼🌽🍉🍓

      @@StoneyAcresGardening Well I live in N. Alabama. And they have grow here forever. I'm old. Lol I guess they are so expensive because you only get 2 beans in a pod. I am a city gal, so I have never had a garden. But we always bought them. They are so good! Cook them with ham and serve with corn bread. Yum I think I just figured out the answer. You would have to plant a lot to grow enough to freeze or sell.

      @@judyparks5016My dad used to grow them long ago, they are delicious and long for the taste, not sure but maybe they are similar to over sized Lima beans. The butterbeans sold at the grocery are NOT even in same ball park as far as taste. I also had been wondering why NOBODY ever discusses or even mentioned them for home gardens. I plan to grow them if I can be successful with the more basic stuff. Currently only doing tomato's, peppers cucumbers -- I will try peas in fall.

    Fantastic! I wondered if there was still stuff I could plant as I have one 4 X 4 open box. LOVED the video on heat proofing our crops.. So glad beets are still viable. Wondered if it's too late for carrots?

    I live in zone 7a-b in New Mexico, our last day of frost is June 1 and our first day of frost is October 15th. We have been having unseasonably hot weather (106 Fahrenheit) for over a week. I’m hesitant to plant anything at the moment.

    If the beets we planted early on have become bitter, could we leave them til the first frost to sweeten them a bit, or is it a lost cause? I think an early hot/dry spell stressed them out.

    • @StoneyAcresGardening
      @StoneyAcresGardening  Год назад +4

      The problem is they will continue to get bigger, and woody as the season goes along. They will be huge by the time the frost comes. Can you season them up to cover the bitterness??? Maybe try roasting?

    • @emkn1479
      @emkn1479 Год назад +4

      @@StoneyAcresGardening yes last year my husband grew them til frost and they were pretty big, but edible. I don’t know that seasoning can cover it…but roasting might help. Plus maybe some feta or goat cheese and a dressing of some kind. We haven’t had them turn bitter before…who knows. I’ll give it a try, thanks!

    10:04 Geat video Rick.
    Curious why radishes are not included on this list.
    While not *the most* heat loving crop, they are very robust and some varieties can mature in 21 days!
    Regarding radishes - when is the best time to plant fall sown black spanish and daikon radishes? CT zone 5B

    • @StoneyAcresGardening
      @StoneyAcresGardening  Год назад +1

      It is too hot in July for radishes. The heat makes them bolt too quickly. Hold off and get them planted about 4 to 6 weeks before your last frost, and then again a couple of weeks later. They will do much better closer to the fall.

    I have a question. Im growing kale right now and iv been harvesting quite a bit but still growing very nicely. But can i leave it outside throughout the winter? Im in zone 6 in ohio. I know kales like the cold. But would it survive outside throughout the winter still? Or would it die and ill have to re plant in spring again? 😩I really wanna keep it all going

    • @CallCassandra
      @CallCassandra Год назад

      I had kale that lasted 3 years and was delicious. Unfortunately, the Christmas frost killed almost everything.
      I'm in 7b, North Georgia (metro Atlanta).
      I'm not sure if it will last all winter in OH, but if you protect it during the rally cold periods, it might.
      We rarely get in single digits, and when it does, it is only 1-2 days.

      I've had kale survive through winter with temperatures down around 20°F

    • @StoneyAcresGardening
      @StoneyAcresGardening  Год назад

      Yes kale does well during the winter. If you cover it with some fabric row cover or a hoop house it will do even better. Just be away that kale is a bi-annual, so as soon as it starts getting warm in the spring it will bolt to seed.

    Rick, HELP! The grasshoppers are attacking my raspberries again this year. Last year they got all of the berries and then went to work on the leaves. I got chickens, but they are WAY outnumbered. I put netting over them, but the grasshoppers seem to find a way under the netting. How do I anchor the netting to keep the little "buggers" out.?

    • @StoneyAcresGardening
      @StoneyAcresGardening  Год назад

      They make some netting anchors that you can buy that will pin them down. Here's a link to some I saw:
