This says a lot about what kind of company Sequential is. They had just released the Prophet-5 rev 4 with the new Vintage knob - one of the key features that makes it sound different from the Prophet-6 - and just a few months later, they released updates for the Prophet-6 and OB-6 that replace the Slop/Detune knob with the Vintage feature. Most companies would never do that, since they'd much prefer you buy the newer, more expensive thing, but Sequential gave it away for free. Their support is amazing too. Great products…great people.
I wish they could give the Prophet 12 vintage knob but they said they won’t.

Back when I was learning keys in the late 90s, all the kids were checking out Jordan Rudess, and lifeless prog rock chop-monster type playing was the standard for demoing synths. I’m so glad we’ve moved into a funkier, more soulful era with players like Robert Glasper, Cory Henry, Jacob Collier, Domi, Jesus Molina, and yes, Matt Johnson providing inspiration!

As much as i respect Rudess's chops, i could never pick out his playing in a "blind" test, unlike Emerson, Banks or Wakeman, who all had chops but also had unique style and technique that made them easily recognizable.
Lifeless. I am happy I am not the only one that felt that way. I’d put domi in there with rudess.

When I was a teenager in 90s, the Jamiroquai space groovs were always an enigma to me. Finally found the man behind. Instantly subscribed!
Matt joined Jamiroquai in 2002. He's amazing in his own right, but he's not the person on the keys back then.
It's incredible that it took this long for a synth company to figure out that slight variation across the board is desirable. The vintage knob is why I rarely hit tune on my JP8 lol. Keep making these videos- you do synths in a compleyely different way than I use them and I love it. It's like viewing myself through a completely different set of eyes
The most recent OS updates for the Prophet 6 and OB6 are just a gift to us proud owners of these instruments. I've got a lot of respect for Dave Smith and Sequential.
Wonderful sounds and phantastic presentation, Matt! You are such a phenomenal keyboard player! I can hear Zawinul, Lyle Mays, Georg Duke, David Foster and other heroes of my past. I hesitated for quite a while - but I now definitely will get this instrument and first thing is getting your sounds!! You should get paid by Sequential! This made me pull the trigger on purchasing my second sequential synth. Was going for the Roland Juno x but this convinced me to stick with sequential and pair it up with my Mopho x4. Thank you Mat for gracing us with your musical talent. Cheers from San Diego California

I came back to listen to this video. There are some incredible patches in there, not least some of the pad sounds that sound almost layered. Doesn't sound like a P6 as I first heard it, at all. Great job man!

Matt, I'm a mere dance music producer, can I send you a few songs I've written as with a musicians magic and right vocalist they could be good.
The "steps" you're hearing around 7:24 isn't opening and closing the envelope - vintage mode makes the tuning, filters, resonance and envelopes of the 6 voices deviate from each other so the voices are a bit mismatched. What you're hearing when you press the key repeatedly here is the synth cycling through the 6 voices which, with vintage turned up, each have a slightly different value for pitch, envelope, filter etc.
So why do Moog One owners complain when the individual voice are out of tune from each other.

Seriously amazing demo! Of course it helps that you are one of the most versatile contemporary keyboardists out in the modern world. Having owned both a Rev. 2 Prophet 5 (3 out of 10 condition but it mostly worked) and a pristine Prophet 600 (10 out of 10 condition), seems the new Prophet 6 fills a void that only the 1980s could cater to.

The Prophet 6 is lovely along with the OB-6 they make a great pair, especially with the new vintage mode. Really wish they had been done in 61 keys though!

These patches are awesome and definitely worth getting! However, there was no info incuded as to where the banks would install, so in case someone else is wondering: they install to presets 300-350.

Excellent demo as usual. Much more useful than the Blade Runner/Stranger Things riffs that are all over RUclips. I'm coming back around to the P6 as a potential buy after getting caught up in the excitement over the P5. It really does sound great.
Neo-Soul Keys has a parameter called “super tune” that is very similar where you can adjust the amount of out of tune-ness the keys have with each other across the board which warms it up and makes it sound more authentic.
The modeled piano, Rhodes and Wurlitzer software let you individually tune each tine, reed, or string
I've been on 1.0.1 until last week, so I had no idea they added a ring mod... IT IS NOW CHRISTMAS IN APRIL!

How could they add a ring modulator without adding more electronics? I though this synth had non-digital signal paths? A ring modulator is perhaps counted as some kind of oscillator then, not as part of the signal path. I guess only the filters are continuous (analog) for real in this synth.
@@herrbonk3635 the effects on this synth are digital, the rest of it is analogue
@@yareshs So what is the principal difference between "effects" and other parts? When did oscillators become "effects"? They are digital here, afaik, while the filters are not.
@@herrbonk3635 ring mod is not done with the analogue oscillators but in the effects section, similar to how one might achieve ring mod with a guitar pedal

@@cp-the-nerd Oh I didn't mean anything like that. The Korg is one of the most popular synths for a reason! The only reason I got the MB was because I knew I wanted a synth that could do everything and be analogue.
If you see my channel pretty much everything except drums is made on the MB (shameless plug I know :P).
I really wish I could have more synths, one for each sound (bass, lead and so on), but you know, money...
Novation Summit would be sweet too, it's also in the same pricerange as the MB. Put these two together and you're almost in the Moog One territory.
Anyway, I think any hardware synth is great and adds something real to tinkering with music!

Great video Matt - totally transforms the Prophet 6 and your sounds are fantastic! What keeps repeating in my brain when I hear you play is that you need to do a project with Joe Jackson. Good timing! I only just installed the latest OS and Googled how to turn the Vintage Mode on. Bought the OB6 last year and kinda neglected the P6, these patches reminded me just how organic the P6 can sound. Insta-buy for me :)

This is the greatest keyboard demo video I've ever seen so far. Your ear and tastes for warm sounds & synths are unmatched. I just turned 50 and I'm finally realizing my lifelong dreams of assembling a small studio and been looking for a good solid synth that marries the vintage with the modern. The Sequential Take 5 just came out recently and I wanted to know if it has that same type of analog warmth, magic, and feel as the Sequential Prophet 6. Would love to get a good recommendation from you...thanks 🙏
