Just busted my standard gibson deluxe tuners (which I was never satisfied with). Been wanting to upgrade to the grover locking tuners, but everyone out there (besides you) is super vague on whether or not it would fit a gibson les paul (studio). I've always dug the look of Grovers on a Gibson headstock, but I was set on the locking drop-in Klusons with the plastic knobs. Problem is you can't get those anywhere right now and the Grovers are in stock on StewMac, so I'm really tempted after seeing this video and how easy the install is.
Nice video for people who are reluctant to do any work on their guitars. (you do know they make a looper that can play more than four beats of play back?)
I'm looking at replacing the stock vintage tuners in my Gibson LP Tribute with locking tuners. Is the toothpick thing a necessary step? Is it ill advised to leave the old screw hole open?
Thank you for your kind words. There is no kit that I know of for such a specific job. Just use a 10mm wrench, a screw driver, a utility knife, a toothpick, and some CA glue

Hi, thank you for your comment. I just found a perfect fit toothpick, it all depends on the size of the hole..the plugs should have a snuggle fit. I usually just use CA glue for these type of jobs. Yhis specific installation does not require the drilling of new holes for where the new screw goes, and there should be no problem even if it was different. Drilling a new hole in a plugged hole is completely ok.
Are there tuners with larger gears to help tune more accurately? It seems all tuners have the same gear ratios, but I would like a larger gear producing the effect of turning more to get closer pitch.
I have a LTD SG like guitar and would love to add new locking tuners, I ordered the Grover’s but man nobody could tell me if they fit or not so I’m curious if it will work.
It is best to have the string make a Z shape. I believe it will cling on better. It's more important to do that with non-locking tuners. Locking tuners should usually work great even without the Z shape bend
Good question. It is possible not to fill the holes, but I don't like to leave open holes. We live in a very humid country, so for future use, it's better plugged, especially Mahagoni, that tends to darken and weaken when exposed to humidity.
What brand were the tuners that came off? What diameter the shaft? Looked like vintage, but brand? What hole size? Why do videos that aren’t really informative?
Great job! but unfortunately, you have replaced the original lightweight tuners with much heavier Grover tuners, thereby increasing the neck to body weight ratio and adding to the notorious SG 'neck dive'.
That's true, however the original lightweight tuners are awful. They go out of tune, break extremely easily and their building quality is terrible. So far non of my customers ever complained about the neck dive differences.. I guess you win some you lose some...

It is Ok'ish to leave the holes open. Just make sure to avoid moisture.

The main two types are 14:1 and 18:1. You should also check out the "Graph Tech Ratio" tuners.. they might be what you need

When you locked the string you bent it inwards before tuning, does it matter if you bend the string inwards or outwards?
It is best to have the string make a Z shape. I believe it will cling on better. It's more important to do that with non-locking tuners. Locking tuners should usually work great even without the Z shape bend
I had to drill new holes replacing tuners on my PRS with grover locking tuners. Holes for the original didn't match up.

They're the tuners that come on almost all gibsons bud. Google the diameters. Simple

Don't! Too heavy. SG's are known to break at the headstock and also neck to body joint. Lockers are too heavy.😊
Don't drop your guitar on its headstock, and you won't have that problem! 😊
