Not sure if anyone else chimed in about this but the Yates row is named so because it was popularized by 6 Time Mr Olympia Dorian Yates who after coming in 2nd place in his first Pro Show (the 1990 Night of the Champions) decided the guy who bested him (Momo Bennziza) did so mostly because of his incredible back thickness. In the aftermath Yates made the barbell row a priority but altered the style a bit to where he was standing a bit more upright (about 70 degrees as opposed to the near 90 degrees most BBers were using while rowing) and used an underhand grip. ironically in 1994 Dorian tore his left biceps with that exercise and opted for an overhand grip from then on but with the same 70 degree stance (he also tore the Vastus in his left leg and had a rotator cuff in his left shoulder that year lol not a good year for "The Shadow" but he still won the Olympia!). I have seen pics of people using an EZ Curl bar for underhand rows to take a bit of stress off the biceps. Great vid!
This is a ridiculously useful post! I’m going to try to see if I can pin this one because this is so helpful! Thank you so much for adding to the video! Comments like this are always welcome!
Good to point out BBs focus a lot more on biceps than other people. I'm sure the Yates row is fine 'if' it's not the first exercise (heaviest) and if the biceps are fresh and conditioned. It's fine to use as a first exercise but warm the biceps up first but be sure not to exhaust them. 👌 If someone doesn't have any biceps in their program (not even Chin's) then risk goes up. Also if they have too much biceps (arm day) then sensible programming of the movement is needed, leave a few days after arm day. If you're putting it in as part of a back and biceps day then it could be trouble. Also whether you perform it strict or "with lots of body English" means a lot for the bicep. As mentioned keeping a fixed back at 70 degrees activating the lats should go some way to protecting the bis. Finally the back can improve strength faster than bicep and this is v important... If you go from 80kg to 110kg on Yates rows in a short amount of time then the bicep is at risk as the weak link. 👌👌👌💪💪💪 Yates row is amazing but can be complex to place into a sensible program especially for a beginner 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Damn it I thought I was the only one to use the EZ Curl bar hack ! 😂 I love it way more than regular Yates rows and I’ve done a shit load of them. Dorian was my favorite bodybuilder (after Arnold of course ). I actually saw him guest pose 3 weeks after him winning his 3rd Olympia which was the year he tore his bicep. He was 275lbs and to say it was awe inspiring is a massive understatement. He was so friggen huge and looked about 3 feet thick when he turned to the side. Got an autographed pic, the black and white side tricep one where he’s huge. Anyway he was super friendly. He even talked to a friend of mine for a while about his cardio prep for the local show,he was doing.
I’ve always called the “corner row” a “Tbar Row” you just don’t have the fancy t bar rig lol. Thanks for all these videos man! Started implementing the conditioning aspect you’ve suggested time and time again after my working sets and I can definitely feel the difference the next week in the working sets. I’ve also noticed less back pain do to the volume and the lighter weight! Keep doing what your doing.
I was coming here to say the same about the T-bar rows. Started them in Gold's Gym where they had the t-bar setup and now do them in my basement gym with the more v-shaped handle but still call them T-bar Rows.
That's a lot of stuff I haven't tried yet. Big fan of inverted rows on the rings, especially after deadlifts when my lower back can use a break. I also like alternating dumbbell plank rows, including a bit of torso rotation like in the croc rows you demoed.
I really appreciate you saying things like that. I recorded this at 3 o’clock in the morning and felt like crap about myself so your comment just made my day haha
I screen shot then printed up that " I will do today..." quote and image then taped it up so I see it every day. you will always be my go to for no nonsense just put in the work inspiration. thanks Brian
Rows became my favorite exercise since your videos turned me onto them. I think chest supported dumbbell rows are my favorite variation. They've done great things for my lats.
Another great video! I just wanted to thank you, you’ve influenced my style of working out so much. I use the giant set model and lots of your recommended exercises (carries, front squats, overhead presses, barbell rows), all of your tips in your vids have taken my overall health and strength to new levels.
A great addition, that worked for me is a paused row. Gives me intense mid back activation. Almost all of these here can be done paused, with less weight of course.
I've always thought I was alone with the barbell cheat rows rowing 5plates. Turns out it's called a deadlift row! This thing is amazing for Lumbar power Also I have to agree with some body english with the rows sometimes to load the plates, heavy rows just STACKS thickness on your lats. Just found your channel Brian, you got yourself a new subscriber. Been training for 20 years and good to see some of my own finding validated and learning new things. Keep up the damn good work!!!
Brilliant video Brian. Meadows rows and barbell rows will end up in my program for variety. Spice things up. Might even put gorilla rows in as a finished 👌👌👌
This is a very good idea and it works really well as a loading platform in the every day carry program. If I could pin another comment, you would have gotten it
Previously I practice already a number (about 6) of these above. Nice to learn about other variations. Gives me inspiration to practice some new ones !
On some of the exercises upright rows and inverted underhand grip rows some people say you can get hurt. Also, some people say squats are bad for you too. Thank you for this one, Brian, you did good!!!
I agree Rich but I would still be very careful about lifting heavyweights with your arm super nated because of how many people I’ve seen pop biceps during deadlifts
@@BrianAlsruheOfficial you’re welcome, you’ve helped me a lot with your videos and programs Brian. I was literally at the end of the 4HorsemenII deload and about to run it again...then the EDC came out.
I like it, Brian - thank you for the video! Have you tried gymnastics ring rows at different angles? I saw your rings in this video. You can do one arm and two arm variations. They're especially good if someone has lower back pain. You're a strong guy, so they may not stimulate you enough. However, I've found great back development and strength from spending a few months on the ring rows. Separately, thanks for the minimal program, it's awesome.
That is terrific, but you’re not gonna go very heavy at all. A spinning 2 inch collar is a good way to row 100lbs. If you grab the actual barbell or even strap in, you’re gonna do 2 to 3 times that much weight
Corner Barbell row in any circles I've been in has been the T-bar or v-bar row. I've found if you just cut a tennis ball and put it on like a sock at the end then put it into a corner and kind of push back a little bit you don't have to worry about getting sacked. Ive put 6/7 plates on there with no issues. Looking to do more!
One that you didn’t get but that I really like is the single arm dumbbell row where you are just standing in a normal stance but bent over. You don’t need to go to heavy because it focuses a lot on the rotational strength of your back and core. You stand with your feet not staggered and bend almost to 90 degrees and then row. It’s a great exercise, you should give it a try
if the way I see people do it at my gym gives any indication at all…I would put powercleans as a row variation as well All jokes though, another great video! Planning to run the powerbuilder again soon which I bought a couple years ago already and looking forward to the revised version of that!💪🏼
Two definitions to help. Somewhere on YT there a vid of Glen Pendlay describing the Pendlay Row in detail, with Max Aita as model. I'd argue that a definitive form exists, and that's it. For the Kroc row, I'm fairly sure when Janae Kroc came up with it, it was partly to help their grip, so had no straps (less sure on that one).
I also like Axel Rows for grip strength as well. Which I hereby put forth an unnecessary alternate name of GNRs. Cause like, Grip N' Rows, but also you know, Axl Rose.....

Because I feel like you could make an entire video just about bodyweight rose alone and I consider things like an inverter bro more as a replacement for when people can’t do pull ups for an actual strength or muscle building row
Hey man, just one question: why is the barbell row superior than the weighted inverted row for building upper back muscle mass? I mean, check the video 'Double Bodyweight Inverted Rows' from ben bruno: he's lifting +80 kg weighted rows for 8 reps. This means it's possible to build up to very heavy loads in weighted inverted rows as well, with the advantage of saving the lower back
brian, why would you go heavy on a chin up but not a yates row? you are a big advocate for weighted pull ups and chin ups, so what makes the yates row terrifying? just wondering, i haven’t done them
I’m honestly not sure man, I truly don’t believe most of the science behind weight training but I do know that a lot of people break their biceps when supinating a hand on deadlifts or continental clean and press. I have yet to hear of anyone tearing their bicep on the chin up. But I may just be ignorant on that
@@BrianAlsruheOfficial yeah, i’ve stayed away from yates rows just because of that. i was just wondering what your opinion was! thanks for the reply! i’m excited for the program!
I was always taught seal row as the "Fat man row". Also pestered my trainer about what rows I should be doing and why and what the differences could be as I was starting and they just kept dodging the question. When I saw this vid posted I almost came a little bit. Thanks a lot Brian - Still one of my most valued resources on this strongman journey. Cheers!
@roninverse it is definitely a great traffic exercise as well as a triple extension technique exercise but he is a strong man so I'm not sure if he has ever used it which is probably why he never filmed it
u forgot cable dumbell rows....my name, i invented them..the cable is to the floor, just grab the cable ball/snap link. no handle. ur bent over the same as a dumbell row but u got instant tension on yr back and it works way better than dumbells....unless u got weak hands.

I mean, check the video 'Double Bodyweight Inverted Rows' from ben bruno: he's lifting +80 kg weighted rows for 8 reps. This means it's possible to build up to very heavy loads in weighted inverted rows as well, with the advantage of saving the lower back
+bodyweight/inverted rows?
Yes, i choose to omit bodyweight versions but the upright row is something I program for people all the time if they can’t do pull ups
Your corner row I call the Landmine Row
Soup & Ated Row 👍👉🤟👊
brian, why would you go heavy on a chin up but not a yates row? you are a big advocate for weighted pull ups and chin ups, so what makes the yates row terrifying? just wondering, i haven’t done them
I’m honestly not sure man, I truly don’t believe most of the science behind weight training but I do know that a lot of people break their biceps when supinating a hand on deadlifts or continental clean and press.
I enjoy Cable Row variations
So do I I just haven’t had access to cable machine for over a decade
I have never seen so many rows…or someone sweat so much. Have at it Brian you Beast.
Aw damn I just finished my back workout. But I did rows with a log cause why not?
Log Rose are legit! I would have included them if it was normal Gym equipment
bro how do u sweat that much
Upright rows are better on cable machine for less injury/pain risk.
I guess I always call the "corner row" a "landmine row".
Damn it must be hot to bust out the sweat bands
I was always taught seal row as the "Fat man row". Also pestered my trainer about what rows I should be doing and why and what the differences could be as I was starting and they just kept dodging the question. When I saw this vid posted I almost came a little bit. Thanks a lot Brian - Still one of my most valued resources on this strongman journey. Cheers!
Then what's a Landmine Row?
7 is a landmine row cause you’re doing it on a landmine attachment. T bar row is with an actual tbar.
I would say that this is the most logical explanation I’ve seen yet
Glenn Pendlay teaching the Pendlay row:

Dorian Yates teaching the Yates row:

Skip the upright row, just do a high pull and get a great shoulder and trap pump
That’s a good point, I would say high pull is far superior to an upright row
@roninverse it is definitely a great traffic exercise as well as a triple extension technique exercise but he is a strong man so I'm not sure if he has ever used it which is probably why he never filmed it
u forgot cable dumbell rows....my name, i invented them..the cable is to the floor, just grab the cable ball/snap link. no handle. ur bent over the same as a dumbell row but u got instant tension on yr back and it works way better than dumbells....unless u got weak hands.
Sooo single arm cable rows?
Every day carry eh? Interesting
t bar row?
I would agree if I had a t bar attachment
It's kind of hard to pay attention when there's pretty girl in the background 😆 awesome video! Good info. 👍
