Heathers is a 1989 American black comedy film written by Daniel Waters and directed by Michael Lehmann, in both of their respective film debuts. The film stars Winona Ryder, Christian Slater, Shannen Doherty, Lisanne Falk, Kim Walker, and Penelope Milford. Its plot portrays four teenage girls-three of whom are named Heather-in a clique at an Ohio high school, one of whose lives is disrupted by the arrival of a misanthrope intent on murdering the popular students and staging their deaths as suicides.
Waters wrote Heathers as a spec script and originally wanted Stanley Kubrick to direct the film, out of admiration for Kubrick's own black comedy film Dr. Strangelove. Waters intended for the film to contrast the more optimistic teen movies of the era, particularly those written by John Hughes, by presenting a cynical depiction of high school imbued with dark satire.
Factoid: The song "Teenage Suicide (Don't Do It)" by the fictional band Big Fun was written and produced for the film by musician Don Dixon, and performed by the ad hoc group "Big Fun", which consisted of Dixon, Mitch Easter, Angie Carlson, and Marti Jones. The song is included on Dixon's 1992 greatest hits album (If) I'm a Ham, Well You're a Sausage.

This movie is so underrated, and deserves more attention. The musical has been gaining more attention than the movie itself

The older I get the more I appreciate the subtle genius of this movie, like how Heather Duke's bulimia was hinted to be caused by the stress of Heather Chandler's bullying (hence why she started eating normally after Chandler's death). I'm sure there's more examples, but that's one I spotted right away. Stuff like that sets these older movies apart and makes repeated viewing more enjoyable.
Not subtle, really.
The original ending was to have JD successfully blow up the school and the student having prom in heaven. The only survivors are Veronica and Martha. At first, she mistakes Veronica for Heather Duke whom she hated for betraying their friendship for Heather Chandler and stabs her with a knife. Martha only stops when she finds out that it's really Veronica and feels terrible for the attack
I'm glad they went with the current ending. Martha's voice is surprisingly pleasant and soothing and makes you feel she's a really nice person. And it made me realize I also had been kinda looking down on her without actually knowing anything about her other than her looks.
There was also an ending where the bomb is strapped to Veronica and the camera zooms in on her face. Then the screen goes black and you hear her say “boom” and then it ends
Where to watch the original one?
@@hanaishaajourneyi don’t think they actually filmed it, it was just the original idea (i think)
@@S0P-wp1sx I was just gonna comment about that ngl
When I was 14 I watched this over and over. Winona Ryder was always the teen I dreamed to be.

Nothing has changed. I think she still looks plenty hot today.

Jason Dean was mine. Now I cringe hard every time I think about this 🫠
I’m jealous of jd, he’s emo and has a gf. Why don’t I get rizz?
Kim Walker, who played Heather Chandler, sadly passed away at age 30 from brain cancer. The actress who played Betty Finn is Renee Estevez, daughter of Martin Sheen and sister to Charlie and Emilio. I loved Pump Up The Volume as well. Another Christian Slater classic. Should check it out if you haven't.
True Romance is his best film!

ikr I don’t see any other people talk about her
I know! Shes my favorite and shes so pretty.
Very
I hated how the musical version of Heather D. wasn't as great as the movie version. She is an awesome character.
Agreed. She's played by Shannen Doherty, which makes me realise she was known before BH90210 and Charmed.
man i really loved the actress that portrayed heather
Honestly the girl who played Heather was pretty solid too
You guys are all wrong the really underrated actress was the one who played Heather, no one talks enough about her.

@@Rika_kaiyo not to be judgemental but Heather is by far better and superior, I don't want to start a war but I'll stand by my opinion and won't change my mind.
Nope. Honestly, the person who played as Heather was more amazing.
jason dean: the original quiet kid
I saw this at a small independent theater when it first came out. I was surprised it ended up being a flop -- this is a really good, vicious satire.
JD: “There are no stupid questions...”

I personally am so happy there is both a movie and musical adaptation. As someone who cannot watch a musical without taking considerably long breaks, having this as an option is so so great. I can still appreciate the story and cinematography of Heathers this way.
I hope they make a movie reboot id really love that

walter white and fluttershy…
Things in the movie that are different from the musical:
• JD’s dad seems much nicer in the movie compared to how the musical portrays him
• Heather Mac is less of a bimbo.
• Veronica isn’t as sympethic towards JD’s death unlike the musical
• There was no party at Kurt’s house (or was it Ram’s?)
• Big Fun is a band
• Veronica and Martha didn’t talk much until the end of the movie
• Heather Mac was SA’d instead of Veronica
• JD is more psychotic in the movie
Basically, in the Musical, Martha just replaces Betty.
I feel like JD is actually nicer in the musical than in the movie, but then everything else I agree
That's cause you can actually sympathise with JD in the musical
Heather Duke seems much quiet and chill before her Chandlerfication, which I think makes it more impactful in some way.
And Veronica in the musical faked her suicide after JD entered her house
I don’t know why it took her so long to realize that J.D is not a good guy
Because he was hot
He’s good looking, charming and they have similar interests and views regarding the school they also the same pretentious thing going on see Veronica’s monocle and “Greetings and salutations” as an example
"Shit, Heather I don't have anything against Martha Dunnstock!"
"You don't have anything for her either."
"If you dont stand for nothing Burr what will you fall for?"

Hi I’m a huge theatre kid and am obsessed with heathers the musical and came here to see the OG version the movie ❤
What'd you think of this one?
@@thomasbicknell175 I really like this one
Yesss same, it's my current favourite musical and I love the movie
Holly shit! Me too!
I kind of like the movie better than the musical just because of og jd. But the musical got me into musicals and theatre
I’m probably late to the replies but I like how Heather Duke copies Heather Chandler to a T, even with her own line of thinking. In the beginning of the movie, when they play croquet, Duke asks Heather “why” in regard to why she keeps taking shots at her. But really she was asking, “what’s the reason for being cruel?” Heather responds with, “why not?” This comes back up later when Veronica asks why Heather Duke has to be an awful person, and the response then was, “because I can be.” It’s only when you have the power, the yes men, and popularity to be cruel without true consequence, that it doesn’t matter how you treat people. Not to mention the ending scene. Heather Duke’s face gets me every time when Veronica chooses to stay behind with Martha. She can’t seem to understand why she would choose to be kind, when she worked so hard in a way that eliminates that reality.
i see comments that are like only 10 or 7 month ago this is awesome!
I’m so gay for Heather Duke

Oops. Should be que sera sera. I took French in high school but that was a LONG time ago.
The TV show From has that as it's main title theme
I finally found the name of the songs, thank you 😭
Then you'll love the fact that the ending credits version of 'Que Sera, Sera', made famous by Doris Day, was covered so brilliantly by Sly and the Family Stone. The lead singer, Sly, had a love affair with Day in the '60s/'70s, so...it is amazing to hear his interpretation/tribute! 💓💓
This movie is so good but it feels like a fever dream 😭
most movies made before 1995 lowk feel like a fever dream
OMG, at 14:00 Kim Walker said, "Did you have a brain tumor for breakfast?" to Shannon Doherty. Kim Walter DIED of a brain tumor in March 2001 & in June 2023 Shannon Doherty said her breast cancer has spread & she now has a brain tumor!!!" "The quarterback buggering the linebacker, what a waste" 😅😂

To this day the music during the Remington party scene unnerves me - it serves as a portent of what’s to come.
