My friends and I along with some on-lookers would always stop by after school, order a $1 special (personal pizza and soda or homemade crazy bread), and play this. This isn't a "banned" edition of TE. Its a ROM Hack that put Jordan in the game, and made the MK characters playable from the start. There were always rumors of PCBs that contained Jordan, but after 30+ years nobody has ever produced pics, videos or anything else confirming it. I've talked to many Midway employees who were around when this game was made, and they've all essentially confirmed that Turmell is a big hype man, and would say almost anything to further popularize the game.

This didn't exist so it was probably something you dreamt, or you played as Jordan in another video game BITD (he was in the early Genesis games, and NBA Live games) and you're confusing memories. Midway employees confirmed he was never in the game. They did some early test things to show the NBA what they wanted to do with JAM and may have used the name JORDAN in those, but he was never a playable character on any of the PCBs that were public@@Kennyisdarkvanilla
Ya it really does for a 2 on 2 game lol. I lost some bitch ass games due to Midway's amazing keep it close AI code, but I actually appreciated it when I was down 10 going into the 4th. This game ate my quarters back in 93-94, and it was always a dream of mine to one day finish it.
After years and years as playing as Pippen, I could reply on him. The addition of Jordan just made this my most favorite arcade videogame of all time. I'm 47, so 1993-1994 was when I would skip class and plug quarters into Jam. Then the SNES/Genesis ports game out and I just played those.... But that arcade version always poked my memory. This version is special, with MJ, Shaq, Barkley, and the Mortal Kombat characters which were banned by the NBA. Mod or not, this is the best version of NBA Jam Arcade.
If X-Box or PS came out with this game men in their 40’s and 50’s would purchase this game. It would reunite Gen xyz together. This game would break sales records! It would be like Gears 3 all over again.
EA Sports got the rights to NBA Jam on Fire edition which was quite different, and there is some modded Jordan versions out there. Its a fun game, but this is the best one out of NBA Jam, NBA Jam TE and even Hangtime. Im playing through HangTime now and its not as fun or exciting.
Tell me about it man.... I know this vid shows a perfect run (almost), but there were a few cheap computer wins in there I just edited out.... This version wasnt that bad, and I felt pretty strong with Jordan... I also found his hotspot 3 which helped me gain and maintain leads.... Some teams were SOOO hard.
The studio is notorious for rigging their games and making them almost unplayable. The CPU responded to your button mashing, almost as if you controlled them. For example, if you pressed "shoot," the CPU opponent guarding you automatically stopped you. Also, there needed to be a way to push them sometimes. Lastly, the game took control of the directions you jumped to prevent you from blocking shots. It was borderline illegal.
Even Hangtime that came after it didn't have that same last minute competitive heat attack that this one had. Something about the announcer screaming on a last minute shot ... "and it's.......... GOOOOOOOD" was amazing

they had intended to have MJ in the game but couldn't because he holds the rights to his own likeness and Midway had only negotiated with the NBA. so he's only in the earliest versions. same thing with Shaq (who would change his mind in later games) and Charles Barkley (who was left out of the home versions because Accolade had negotiated his rights to make Shut Up and Jam on the Genesis).

Honestly i'm not sure. I played through the entire season and it would just switch automatically. I captured the entire gameplay from Q4 for each team. If I won I won, if I lost I lost. The after championship games are mostly developers and mascots etc., i haven't really explored the continuation yet, but I plan too... Archive.org has a lot of rom packs available. This one was in the newest FBNeo Arcade Pack and I believe the filename was nbajamre.zip. You can view the ZIP and just grab what you want. I use Batocera v37 on a Pi4B to front end my retrogames but im sure you can get it to run in Retroarch with the latest FBNeo core.
Michael Jordan wasn’t part of the National Basketball Players Association during a lot of the 90s. So most basketball video games from that era couldn’t have Michael Jordan in their video game unless Jordan signed off on it personally.

Shaq didn’t appear in the console versions of NBA Jam too.

The catchup mechanic the CPU gets it crazy. All of a sudden they run faster, hit everything and block everything.

The catchup mechanic can be disabled. You can also set the game to easy
