New rocker panels came in while I was editing this video, so the next video should be replacement/fabrication of floorpans! I KNOW that 95% of the 620s out there need new floors, so I'm excited to make that video and share my style with y'all.

Are these Datsuns good first pickups?
They can be. Mechanically, they seem pretty straight forward, easy to work on, and reliable. The 77-79 would be best for a new owner because the front suspension (ball joint type) is far superior and less prone to issues.
These trucks love to rust. I doubt you'd find a project truck that doesn't need floors and doors. If you can live with some rust for a while as you fix it up, I'd say, "go for it!"

You're welcome! I plan to start shooting more 620 videos soon, and hope to have the truck back on all four wheels by the end of the year.
Lots of rust, I would only work on this one side, after fixing every thing moving on to the other side. On my 620 , every piece I hand made I test fitted it over the rusted piece, then I cut out floor in small pieces and weld it in, you have a lot to cut out at one time and weld in at one time. This is a really big job, a lot more than just floor pans like my truck, wishing you the best and keep up the good work. I would like to thank you for saving this old truck and sharing your rustoration.
Yeah, that's also my plan. I only cut out the passenger side so far, and will not cut the other side until this side is all fully welded. I use the old pieces as templates and test fit. I made the whole floor on my '50 Ford this way and it turned out amazing.
Stay tuned to this project, because I'm almost to the point that it's about to turn a little wild!

I['m enjoying your Datsun 620 video's , I've owned a 1978 620 extended cab for
20 years. I only used it for short time way back then (1/4 )of a year use, as I over heated it
was leaking from water pump .But I live in a rural area and have kept it , even though my wife
wanted to crush it ,I always said no. I wonder if ( who ever sold you the rockers ) makes other
floor panels? keep up the great work fun to watch and see how 1 guy can re do a 610. with fab's, improvements.
Rockers are from Tabco. They make other panels, but I don't think they make floorpans. They might now, I haven't checked in a while.
You’re out of Virginia beach?! Same here! I have an ‘82 Datsun I drive occasionally and a ‘73 620 I’m working on currently. May need some pointers if you’re still living in the area!
I'm still out here in VB. I'm about to get back into this 620 this fall, so keep an eye out. You haven't seen anything yet! Its going to get wild.

Just a reminder, when making the body mounts you will need to make a channel for water to drain. Also on the sheet metal on the back side of the rocker panel has a few channels for water to drain out.
Thanks man! I'm aware of this and have been thinking of 3D printing a set of dies to "stamp" channels just like the factory ones.

It is! I have a video that features it a lot more. Check out my Exhaust Resonator video for a ride in the van. It will also receive a turbo, aftermarket ECU, and LSD in the future so that I can do sweet skids!

For the pinch weld cutter just start a small pilot hole so it doesn't run away on you.
I've done that as well, but they still make me angry. I need to buy one of the drills that have a c-clamp built into it so that it can't walk away.

If you use a 1/8 pilot drill before using your spot weld remover bit .
It acts like a guide so you won't wreck the teeth off the cutter
1/8 is still too big to keep the spot cutter on centered. I like a good center punch, which is what I used. As with most annular cutters, there just isn't a 100% foolproof way to have them not walk.
Like your work! I am currently on a 620 myself. Floor and bed look pretty much the same, but I guess mine has about two pounds of body filler extra on it :/
I haven't gotten into all of mine yet, but I know there is a lot of filler in the bed. I will be fixing all that in a video when I get to that point.

What was the brand/type of black paint you used for the frame?
I used Rustoleum Professional High Performance Protective Enamel. I get it at Lowe's, it's the one in the silver can. Semi-gloss black is the color.
In this video, did you spray inside of the chassis/frame with preventative or primer at any point? I'm new to restore and am almost to the frame on my King Cab and want to make sure the rust is stopped. I'm on the Oregon Coast so I want to make sure I don't set myself up to do it over again. Any input would help bud. Thanks
I sprayed as much as I could. While I'm not a huge fan of Eastwood products, they do have a frame paint that has a long flex tube with a circular spray head that is intended specifically to go inside frames.
On these trucks, the frames definitely fight rust longer than the bodies do.
