    CLIP DESCRIPTION:
David (David Naughton) and Jack (Griffin Dunne) cause a stir when inquiring about a five pointed pentangle star on the wall in the Slaughtered Lamb pub.
    FILM DESCRIPTION:
While wandering the English moors on vacation, college yanks David (David Naughton) and Jack (Griffin Dunne) happen upon a quaint pub with a mysterious patronage who warn them not to leave the road when walking after dark. Irreverent of such advice as characters in horror films always are, the two decide to find a short cut....David wakes up in the hospital with a nasty bite wound to his shoulder; the freshly deceased, and rapidly decomposing, Jack arrives soon after to deliver the grim news that, unless he commits suicide, David will become a werewolf when the moon is full. David dismisses the encounter as a hallucination, but all indicators point to lycanthrope; evenings of barking and bloodletting follow closely behind. While the story is thin and much of the tongue-in-cheek humor is overdone, there are plenty of genuine jolts thanks to makeup guru Rick Baker's eye-popping special effects. The werewolf, resembling a cross between a bear and a wolverine, appears frighteningly real, and, given the fantastic premise, the gore is most convincing (although surprisingly and refreshingly scant). The hospital dream sequences are creative, and the scenes in which the werewolf runs rampant through downtown London are particularly good. In all, An American Werewolf in London is an original, atmospheric film that manages both to scare and amuse. While dismissed by most American critics upon its release, the film managed to secure a place in the annals of American cinema when Baker won an Academy Award for his amazing effects and creature designs.

This is a brilliant scene, IMO. It emphasizes the sense of estrangement, of foreignness, that makes the next scene so great. Anyone who has traveled around the world knows that feeling of uncertainty, when you're not sure if what you say will be taken as intended, when what others say may be friendly ribbing or offensive provocations.
This scene sets David and Jack apart from the land where they happen to be, and makes David's descent into madness and depression after Jack's death all the more poignant.

One of the scariest things about this movie is that we never realise why the town is cursed.
One of the townsfolk even says ''there's something wrong with this place'', which suggests that the town itself has an evil presence. Also, why were they so reluctant to let outsiders know about the werewolf? Were they afraid that the police would discover something deeper & more sinister?
I feel this film could EASILY do with a prequel.

He was with his buddy, who was closer to 70, he tells me in a thick accent, 'how do you like the English air, it's good for the complexion(rubbing his skin)-look at him(pointing to his friend)he's dead' -I thought that was really funny.

On the base they presented a relatively new movie every Saturday night and Sunday night. My entire class of about 40 students would always attend the Sunday movie, we were really bored. The movie always cost, $1.00 to attend. This movie blew me away! It was so much more than I expected! I still to this day, 38 years later, remember this movie night as if it were yesterday. 🐺 My theory is that the men in the pub knew that if Jack and David were to ask about the star, they would then ask about the howling outside and then their secret gets revealed. Hence why the villagers then proceed to send David and jack to be killed by the werewolf. Also explains why they were less hostile to the doctor when he showed up he wasn't there on a full moon and so would not hear any howling.🐺

What's interesting is that Brian Glover would eventually make a guest appearance years later in an episode of "Bottom" which was co-written by and starred Rik Mayall. I wonder if the two had become friends during the filming of this and Rik had a hand in casting him.
