the strange ball is a placeholder ball. if you start a new game and go out of your house, you can do the fighting pose emote where your trainer holds the pokeball of the first pokemon in your party. since you dont have a pokemon yet, you will hold the placeholder ball
You can have a pokemon have the placeholder ball as their pokeball if they’re traded from legend arceus to S/V. Or, better explained, your pokemon will have the placeholder ball if you trade it from another game but if that pokemon is catched in a pokeball that is not available in the game you’re trading it from your pokemon will be inside a placeholder ball. I tried it with legend arceus, had a cindaquil in a pokeball, traded it into legend arceus and it turned into a strange ball.
I read somewhere that the strange ball is a placeholder in both Gen IX and Legends Arceus for balls that don't exist in the respective games. so a Pokémon caught in an old timey crafted Pokéball or Jet Ball, for example, will be in a strange ball when transferred to Gen IX. not sure if this is true or not though
i could swear they had an official statement with pictures about it. i thought it was interesting. though the design of it is clearly based on the Pokemon Home color gradients the app uses for the backgrounds.

Honestly, all I look for in a pokeball is for its effects to match the colors of the Pokémon I catch. The catch rate is meaningless unless you're trying to save time or catch legendaries that run away in some of the games. Most Pokémon are easy to catch anyway, once they're at 1hp and asleep/paralyzed.
The strange ball is used when transferring between Legends Arceus and other games. All the apricorn balls get turned into it when transferring out, and all the regular balls turn into it when transferring in.

It’s essentially a placeholder ball. It was in BDSP and Legends. If you transfer a Pokémon caught in a Hisuian ball to BDSP, it becomes a Strange Ball in that game. Likewise if you transfer in a modern Poké Ball to Legends, it becomes a Strange Ball.

technically there is a way to get a pokemon into the strange ball, if you catch a pokemon in a pokeball that isnt in another game, that pokemon will be in a strange ball when transferred over for example, if you catch a rowlet in a jet ball in legends arceus and transfer it over to scarlet/violet, that rowlet will be in a strange ball since the jet ball isnt in any other mainline game

I used a Luxury Ball for my Kingambit and a Friend Ball for Ogrepon and they absolutely perfect fits I highly recommend on using!

This is definitely the case. The same thing happens in BDSP. Any Pokémon sent from Legends to BDSP is in a Strange Ball.

I'm loving all of these balls but I especially love the strange ball because of the color, and I love the dream ball, love ball, and heal ball because of the pink and purple.

with pokemon home its now obtainable but really annoying essentially in PLA you have to catch a pokemon in a ball that doesnt exist in scar/vio like a jet ball and then transfer it over and it will be in a strange ball, its a pretty tedious process but i did it and ive got a really cool shiny gible in a strange ball

I had to resist the temptation of throwing a beast ball at a full hp shiny indeedee, I threw a moon ball instead but it broke out anyway, so dive ball it is.
Maybe if we have more than one ball for the special ones we get for finishing the Pokedex. I MIGHT ACTUALLY USE THEM.
The strange ball apears when you get a pokemon that is in a pokeball that isn't in the game, then if you have a pokemon in a pokeball that is not in the game and get it by pokemon home that pokemon will have the strange ball in the game, but when returned to pokemon home it'll still have that ball

Strange ball is the ball it puts pokemon from Legends Arceus in when you transfer them into Home. (If they're not in a pokeball, great ball, or ultra ball.)
The Strange Ball is what all pokemon from Legends Arceus are put in. Because the last pokeballs look different from the current ones, and GameFreak was too lazy to code them into gen 9. So they all become Strange Balls

I believe the strange ball is obtained when a pokemon from Legend Arceus caught with this game's exclusive balls are transfered into diamond/pearl remake and they turn into strange balls. I wonder if breeding pokemons with it can be transferable

The "strage ball" i think is seen in legends arceus... and I dont know if it is supposed to be the "premier ball" for that game, or just how the game intemperates the raid premire balls from Pokémon GO
It's a ball representing Pokemon Home pokemon that are transferred too Arceus, This ball is also in BDSP and Sword and shield i think.
The strange ball replaces the ball of any pokeball that doesn't exist in that time period
Examples being: any pokemon in PLA's "jet balls" will be in strange balls in "future" games like sword and shield or bdsp, as that ball no longer exists. The same vice versa, since modern ultra balls don't exist in PLA, they'll convert into strange balls
