I've gone away from Adobe and use affinity suite to replace Illustrator, photoshop, and indesign. For video editing I'm using davinci resolve. I just hate the idea of paying for something I wont own. I rather pay one time and keep the version I got and have upgrading optional then end a subscription and be unable to open any of my files. And adobe software is super buggy.

      @Frozen_Death_Knight 3 года назад +10

Not forever, but you will get several free major and minor updates until they release 2.0, 3.0, etc. Bought my copy of Photo in 2017 and haven't paid more than initial price point since. Last time I checked, Serif will keep making free updates for at least a few more years at the least, so it is great value for what you spend.

Hi Ran, personally I completely abandoned Adobe almost two years ago and for me it wasn’t for the subscription model. I made the switch because I think the adobe's softwares are simply bad, they have been great in the past but nowadays are outdated at the core. In fact adobe for marketing reasons (I guess) decided to focus on new functionalities (that are arguably useful in my opinion) for years, as result today we have softwares with an outdated core which don’t implement at all the real improvements of the industry in the recent years (gpu acceleration, machine learning, etc). I'm aware they are trying interesting things on newest products like XD or the iPad's stuff but for me this is not enough. Not mentioning all the Helpers, Deamons and mysterious files that their messy ecosystem installs on your machine for whatever reason.
Right know I’m fully covered with the Affinity Suite, DaVinci Resolve, Blender, both Figma and Sketch and Vectoraster. I hope one day they'll realize that what really matters in a piece of software is the foundation not all the gold plating that you put on top of it.

Hi, I can see paying for Adobe as a professional / business user. Someone who wants to use it for personal projects or to learn and become familiar with the applications it is much too costly. It seems to be shortsighted on Adobe’s part. I imagine a significant percentage of those ‘amateurs’ would eventually use it professionally.

I also have Adobe CC and agree, it's so useful to have all the different tools for photo/vector/audio/video etc. available. Another benefit is that with the subscription, I also get free hosting for my portfolio website which is amazing.
However, I'm primarily a UX designer, and right now I prefer to use Figma and/or Framer over XD - maybe it'll change in the future though!

As an amateur it's hard to justify subscription-based software, you simply do not use it enough..on the other hand, at some point you end up taking fairly good pictures, that just need that little extra touch to become wall hangers.
Think I would swap from Gimp to Adobe creative cloud if there was a pay-per-picture option.

My friend, you are very right, I don’t even want to go into the financial part of it but Adobe ceos are make a very nice chunk of change off everyone’s back. On a different note, I’m a designer that has used photoshop and illustrator for years. Now I’m tired of being milked like a cow. So, what to do? In my case, in order to replace photoshop and illustrator I would need : in Canadian dollars (affinity photo, designer and publisher: 150$ total with free updates )+(Corel paint shop pro :100$+ GRFX studio: 540$, draw 630$and painter 500$)+ ( Gimp + add on g mic filters :Free)+ (Inkscape: free) + (krita: free) , bringing us to a total of 1920$ Canadian, vs the 56$/month (Canadian) or 672$ per year. I much prefer owning my soft ware and upgrading when I see fit rather than this vampiric adobe model, that forces updates down your throat, and by consequence, forcing you to ever upgrade on the actual computer that is running it. In conclusion either adobe brings back the cs model,( possibly charging us for certain updates like new tools and features that we can choose to either purchase or not) or simply boycott them completely. THERE IS LIFE AFTER ADOBE!!!

I am starting out, trying things and learning stuff. Makes no sense for me to pay a subscription if Web Designer will not be my cup of tea. So I am really trying to find out with what I can start with and hope that free alternatives aren't much painful to start with. I am using GIMP instead of Photoshop and Inkscape instead of Illustrator but for designing a new website I am really struggling to what start with, I tried webflow but instead making my website I kind of wasn't able to do what I wanted to do in that struggling with most of elements to put in where I want and not break the consistency or structure of website...
I am going to try Figma now, hopefully I will be more successful than with webflow.

Great video! The full version of Adobe CC I have is only (US) $52 for myself. At work the cost is more for the business license like you mentioned. I have the Affinity software on my iPad and laptop and use them along with the Adobe CC software depending on my needs. They are tools and serve their purpose when needed. No other software out there (that I know of) offers the ability to sync files in the cloud across platform which is a big deal for me. At the end of the day, software is a tax write off for a business.

The subscription style adobe does with their monopolistic position in the market right now is just predatory imo. If adobe released software that updated every year like photoshop 2022 and was a different software with each release every year and could own it forever for that one version of photoshop I would but nope.

  • @bigman7856

I feel like affinities model is really good for individuals or small teams. I firmly believe they’ll eventually surpass Adobe in comparative app features just given the consistency of quality for updates. Additionally, on that topic, I am more likely to update every single year for great new features. The commitment required by Adobe is madness for most small creators. You can get one app for 30 bucks a month or the whole cloud for 80+. There is not a good amount of customizability there for creator needs. They insist the price is right, but you see so many other companies doing great things with so much less of a cost, let alone no subscription. In a world of the internet and increasingly free information, Adobe will struggle outside of the corporate sector. Though at the same time I get the vibe that they don’t want small businesses or individuals who are new to the industry using their software. They term those folks as “hobbyists” and it is low key disgusting, but understandable from a big business POV.

Years ago I read an interview (or atleast I think I did, might've been fake too) where Adobe said that they don't mind pirating as much, because at some point when you are ready to pay for some kinda software, you already know how to use theirs, so you are more likely to pick their software. Now this was like 5 years ago, so I'm not sure about how legit it is, but sounds smart.

I need to do video editing and logo design, which means that I'll need photoshop, premiere and illustrator. In Australia each of them go for 30 dollars a month, so 90 dollars a month total. The entire creative suite costs 76 dollars, but either way, I'm going to either spend more for the stuff I only need or spend a little less and have more than a dozen apps I will never use.
If we do a little math 76 dollars a month over 20 apps is about 3.80 per app. They should price each individual app at like 6 dollars a month to make it reasonable for someone who only needs 3 or 4 apps but still offer great value for someone who needs most of the suite.
What's the point in the good value you get for buying the entire suite when you only need 3 apps

I make zero dollars as a designer/graphic artist but I learned Photoshop decades ago with pirated versions. Later I BOUGHT CS5/CS6 because I found a good deal and I find that I use Photoshop EVERYDAY for various scan/photo projects I do for fun. After a while (and many Windows upgrades) CS6 was starting to get a little "long in the tooth" so I tried Affinity since Adobe only sells subscription-ware now. It was--- OK.....but my muscle memory for common functions and various short cuts that are now HARD-WIRED into my psyche after about 25 years of Photoshop use just did NOT work with it! So I have reluctantly started paying for a 'photography' subscription which includes Photoshop and Lightroom for $9.99 a month. It IS a bit expensive for something I do for fun....but worth it IMHO. I do think they should offer an "Hobbyist" sub with just Photoshop and no online storage for $5.99 a month. That would be a GREAT deal for people like me.

Interesting thoughts, Ran, thank you for sharing. As a developer, I find Sketch is the design tool for me, and I recently (3-4 mo.) made the switch from Adobe to Affinity Photo and Designer. Though for me, this works. I am not heavily involved in vector work and use Designer as a tool for editing logos and vector files when necessary, but the majority of the work I do is in Sketch and Affinity Photo. I find the lower cost and similar toolset is right for me. There are some features that are missing from these newer tools, but I believe the teams behind them believe in the innovative potential and their products will continue to evolve.

Thanks for sharing Ran! One additional thing that I actually think is massive, .ai files. Adobe owns exclusive rights to the file type and its industry standard; I get asked on literally every project that includes vector design work to include a ai version. Even if you were to make a workflow Adobe free, you would still need illustrator for file conversions. I'm thinking I move away from XD to Figma for client relations purposes and content editing, do you think there's any value to that or should I just show image / video mockups and present finished work from XD only? For my stack I use Affinity for 90% of photo / graphic design stuff nowadays, I actually think for freelance or small agency web designers Affinity is a far superior product. After effects + bodymovin is used for most projects now and I find premiere a lot easier than DaVinci Resolve for video. Webflow all the time!!

I remember Adobe being free now its monthly
Especially when my father used to buy alot of their products back then, until one day I think one of the programs of adobe he updated then it became a subscription even though he bought it as a lifetime (forgot which software it was)
If anything Adobe did subscription cause they did not have much competition if any at all back then and tried to capitalize on that, now there's others out there (I prefer Davinci resolve cause of their colors and simple use)
There was one illustrator/adobe like software out there that tried to transition from one time payment to subscription and they LOST ALOT of users to the point they had to reel in their decision

  • @FigureUnboxing

Subscription is BAD, it makes the users feel as if they do NOT "own" the software; something more like renting an apartment which you don't own and you have to pay per month.

I have adobe subscription. But I only use dreamweaver, acrobat, and photoshop out of it for only like a handful of times per year. Years ago I bought adobe cs4 web. I actually just installed it flawlessly today and I think i'm gonna cancel my adobe subscription. It's very old but I don't use it much and it does everything I need. it's gonna save me about $600+ per year.

I warned people that renting adobe software was a bad idea. PS was 10 dollars. Now people are crying its 22 dollars w/ super useless Fresco. I would take Sketchbook (free), Rebelle, CSP, Artrage (80 buy/50 upgrade), Painter (300 buy/100-150 upgrade, ect, ect. Fyi... upgrading every year is a waste of money.
For certain people, perhaps renting is a good alternative if you're using 80% of their software; despite... Adobe breaking, constant patches/fixes and in Mac Users case, losing all of their photos.
    I use use of 3 Adobe's software & only 1 on a regular basis.
The option to buy should still be available. This is the #1 reason why Adobe is a huge pirate magnet. #1 actually. Adobe knows it too & they really don't fight it because it keeps them at top. They consider it free advertising.
Edit: Affinity Designer is becoming a really good Illustrator replacement as is Affinity Publisher. Photoshop, still has no equal yet I constantly warn my students to seek alternatives to PS. Yes, despite being a Adobe certified expert & instructor, I do NOT endorse Adobe.

They used to sell the software for like $100. Now they're doing the subscription model because of greed in my opinion so I stopped using them. The software is called Construct 3....I have Construct 2.

It's a great business model but I don't like how they hold your work hostage if you don't pay their subscriptions. I mean it's just like having a phone plan and such but if the other softwares caught up to Adobe's and it's a one time payment then I'd rather pay an one time fee instead of a lifetime of payments.
I can see people not wanting to buy new because of the initial lump some price while what they have are still working and does the job. I'd use the CS version forever if I could. It may take longer to do some things but the end product is the same. People are going to judge you on your work instead of your tools.
I really don't want to be stuck in another subscription but if I was Adobe I need to pay employees and if I was a business I can see it as a tool and a tax deduction. If I was just a hobbyist who edits on occasion then I'd get the one time payment ones.

I'm an Affinity user, but the thing a lot of people miss about Adobe's subscription model is that when they used to sell the software standalone, it would cost MORE if you bought every new version than it now costs to stay subbed to CC. Significantly more. These apps used to cost thousands.
The real problem with Adobe is that the software is actually quite bad, and it's not improving at a reasonable pace, and it's not competitive. Affinity is an *objectively superior product* in most respects. Yes, it's missing some things, but everything it does, it does better. Adobe is far behind and for what they are offering they are vastly overcharging. Adobe's software is bloated, slow, buggy, and they are very piss poor at keeping it updated on all platforms.
And actually worse than all of that is the support, they have some of the most absolutely worthless support ever. The app broke on my PC once and their support connected to my PC and proceeded to completely fuck up my entire OS. I had to reinstall everything (and it still didn't fix the issue... that's when I broke up with Adobe for good).
Also trying to say that a $50 software leaves you with the same problem as a $1000 software in not wanting to update is incredibly silly imo. When the full price of the software is less than one month, that cannot reasonably be considered as a con. Not to mention that "problem" is a problem for the developer, not the user. If the old software works there's no reason to update.
This isn't a "might be cheaper" situation. Basically for the price of 2 months sub, you can have all the design tools *forever*. If you also edit video, you could look at using Davinci Resolve which is completely free and professional grade (or get the upgraded version that most won't even need for the price of another 4 months of service, you're still way ahead after just half a year). It's not even remotely comparable in terms of budget comparing Adobe to non-Adobe.
Also, XD is great, it's an amazing tool, that team is doing a great job and almost acting like a completely different company. However, that app is free. There's no need to pay a dime for it.

➡ Google has great cloud storage. Free 40GB. Therefore, cloud storage and the presence of many programs are not an argument for the subscription model. Ordinary software like Photoshop or Illustrator is installed on a local computer and does not require anything else to work. Perhaps only sometimes updates with bug fixes by the company itself, which they are required to do for free. So the subscription model cannot be applied to such software. This is not SaaS to constantly consume company resources and pay for it. That's why people hate the subscription model for standalone software.

$1000 per year isn't a lot if you're making decent income from your gigs to be honest. I grew up using photoshop and have never paid for it, the whole suite actually but for the first time I'm actually not gonna use a pirate version. I'm gonna pay an annual subscription using student discount... I can honestly think of NO design task that can't make you less than the monthy subscripton in a DAY. A single logo at the very bottom of the price scale should earn you $100+. Working a menial job for the lowest possible salary should earn you the subscription in a day. Compared to the benefit you get, the price is minuscule. Compare Adobe CC with programs like V-ray that cost €629/per year, or my legal copy of FontLab that cost me about $450. It's not how much the tool costs, it's the skill. If skill could be taken in the form of a pill and bam! - you know your stuff and are fully employable, people would crawl through sewer pipes to get it. If you can't earn good money with graphic design, wherever on the world you live, it's not the tools that are the problem.

He ignores graphic designers whose main tool is InDesign, who mainly use typography or are placing into layouts images made by others. In other words, he ignores most designers, full stop.
As far as Adobe's subscription goes, this is pricing out of the market many small businesses and sole traders. Appalling.

Although it's easy to knock Adobe as the 800 lb gorilla, what people tend to forget is that with a Creative Cloud subscription not only do you get full access to all industry-leading products and services, but every few months these products are being updated and improved. XD is a good example, as Ran explained. For smaller freelancers the Affinity products might suffice, but if you're hired by a medium to large company you'll need to be comfortable with Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Acrobat, After Effects, Premiere Pro, etc.

    • @StenIsaksson
      @StenIsaksson 2 года назад

The difference is the pricing model. Netflix don't charge you $30 a month for just one series. With Adobe's model you need to pay $30 for each series you want to watch.
So it's the pricing model that is the issue. I only want to use two Adobe products and I don't want to pay for all of them. For those two I have to pay like $50 a month.

  • @edurmissa

In my opinion, Adobe get a hit in the short-time range as you get the kind of cheap price at the moment, they sell their stuff at many ranges, pros, years, students, but I feel like they are leading a consumerist ideology behind which is something I can´t stand. Why is this?, because at the long-time it would be more expensive than a full price own software, about 2-3 years of service, takes more money and Adobe CC is about 6-7 years old. The more shit their add on software, the heavier gets for your RAM, nowadays a computer from 2016 could have some slowish run with a CC2020-2021 version. But well, you could argue thet you buy adobe shit for living, you work so hard and you are a bussines king that undoubtedly you can pay your water and electricity bill along your software bill along a newer top notch computer to keep working, but this is the problem, if you do not have the latest or at least enough your magical work flow will not be that good. You can try to play smart, but there always is that felling of need more money to solve your problems buying stuff.
