in a survival situation you can use the cutting edge to spark a fire steel, yes it will dull it, but only in 1 small spot and not enough to make the knife useless, when it comes to staying alive now,, the edge can be re done later,, now matters

I am a big fan of esee 5, I went for the G10 option from TKC. I put my own 90 deg on and have a ferro rod added to all my sheaths for all my large knives. This knife will get you through any bad day and instills a lot of confidence when in the bush. I have used it a lot in the Zululand bush on east coast south africa and place it only 2nd to my steel eagle delta which is a phenomenal survival knife. Great Channel Dan.

Good information, and you are correct regarding the lack of a 90-degree spine and the coating. It's a shame that most reasonably priced "survival" knives come like that!

All around. I’d pick the BK10. It’s not as stabby which is important. But I think it crosses over to surviving in an urban environment better. Stronger tip from the profile. Good for digging a foxhole. And going through doors. Thumb ramp a big plus for old hands but it needs to be moved Back an inch. The esee 3D is the winner in handle ergo. I think the BK10 is a better SEER knife.fill that pocket with iodine tabs and a honing rod and a fine draw file to keep that spine sharp.

    • @FreedomFox1
      @FreedomFox1 2 года назад

Interesting ideas, have you done much digging with the BK10? I’m actually considering it as a garden knife (so mostly digging with some light chopping and brush clearing). I can’t find a hori hori with good tool steel, so this looks like the next best thing, even if a bit less good at moving dirt. I wish the BK10 were a bit longer, like the BK7, but the 7 doesn’t seem to have the trowel-like front end.

This was a good video - thanks for sharing.
Concerning the mentioned fire-starting capabilities of the Esee 5, if I have a ferro-rod with me, I also have a small striker to go along with it so that's not an issue, although the use of one's knife spine seems to be the popular way to do it these days. I do bow-drill frequently and very much like the bow-drill divot in the Esee 5 since it makes prep for that task just a little easier. I've filed the choil of an Esee 6 I have, to use for creating an ember on a piece of char cloth using a ferro rod as shown in one of my videos. I like both the Esee 5 and 6, with each having it's own advantages.

  • @impermanenthuman8427

Check out JOE X channel destruction test of the Esse 5, amazing for a knife that is also great for all survival tasks (except perhaps primitive trap construction…as you say a smaller carver would be better)
One of the first things that a downed pilot would need the knife for is actually to cut and smash their way out of damaged helicopter wreckage, the esee 5 pointed pommel is a glass breaker, but JOE X just smashed through the car windows with the blade 🤷🏻‍♂️😆 not sure how much stronger aircraft windows might be though, be he also stabs into the car paneling etc suggesting you may well be able to stab and lever (like stabbing and then prying/levering open a can of beans) your way into or out of the fuselage of an aircraft.
The problem with a lot of his tests is that at some point to be the toughest knife he can test, it will likely end up being a crow bar, which isn’t much use as a knife, but Esee 5 stands out as being great at both qualities
His test of the Gerber Strongarm and also Becker BK2 were interesting to compare, not sure if he has tested the Becker BK10 (that you have there) yet? 🤔
Dutchbushcraftknives tested the BK2 directly to the Esee 5 and preferred the BK2, but for a survival knife to get from an urban environment to and wilderness environment and then back, I think the Esee 5 with the mods you have done is the best, maybe pair it with a Mora Companion in stainless for carving, food prep, fishing and tasks in and around salt water etc and for my beginner level skills I would feel I had the best survival combo any knives could ever give me

I removed the thumb ramp on my BK7, and like it way better than with the thumb ramp.
The two things that give the Essee’s the edge to me, are they are not skeletal tang like the BK’s, and their unconditional warranties.

It would be nice to strike a rod on the factory spine . However ,I don't believe it to be that critical simply because there are other ways to start a fire. If you were in a situation where you lost all your belongings in a mishap except the one knife strapped to your side, then the right angle spine would be of no good without the rod. Also the rod would be another item to carry. If I were stranded in the Bush, I know I would have the necessary items right there in the bush . Could make a bow drill with some tree branches & natural twine for the cordage. A magnifying glass would work great too provided the sun was shining. But again , another item to pack. Great video and very informative comparison. Thank you.

Nice video as always. I know this might be a lot to ask but, if you're able to get your hands on a SLYSTEEL/TOPS Shark Tooth Hunter, I would love to see you put it through your usual tests. The split finger guard is appealing to me as you can use both hands without having to put the knife down/away. Great comparison. Even though I have a BK 10 I would consider the Esee to be one stage up because it has a true full-tang handle compared to the BK 10 which has a hollowed out handle. Interesting comparison. I still would have compared the ESEE 5 to the BK 2, since they’re so much alike, but the BK-10 is an interesting alternative.
The part that seemed a bit unreal is modding both knives before comparing them. Unless you have a source the buy the knives already in that configuration, I think most people would benefit from a comparison of both knives in *STOCK* condition.
Still, for anyone with a few *$$$* to spare, the video showed what’s possible, and does provide a bit of _”knife fantasy”_ (or _”porn”?)_ for the rest of us. (My use case would be a form of _”urban survival”,_ anyway.)

This will ruffle a few feathers but in a S.E.R.E. situation a fero rod is overrated, buy a Bic lighter or ten. I carry 2 or 3 on my person everyday, I have a pack of 3 in my car I have 3 in my car, I have 3 in my wifes car. I have 3 each of our escape bags and there are 4 of us, husband, wife and 2 children. I have 3 in our first aid kit I have 3 in my personal 1st aid kit as do my wife and children. Every knife we have that has a pocket we have a Bic lighter so at a minimum we have 45 Bic lighters. In a S.E.R.E. situation your not going to be stuck in the bush for years waiting to be rescued, a Bic lighter will light a couple of thousand fires and after the gas is finished you have about fifteen hundred on the flint striker. In a real shit hit the fan scenario with a minimal of 40 plus Bic lighters I will have all the time in the world to learn how to use a bow drill. No I dont have shares in Bic but maybe i should.
