    Date of Travel: JANUARY 2018
    Airline: BRA Braathens Regional
    Flight #: TF11
    Aircraft: Avro RJ100
    Livery: BRA Standard pastel rainbow
    Route: GOT-BMA
    Tail number: SE-DSV
    Miles: 235
    Airborne time: 0h56m
    Notes: Aircraft swap from RJ85
    Cost to book: Around £100, including bags and flexibility - one way.
    Thanks for finding my video and pressing play!
    I was in Gothenburg in 2016 and noticed a strange-looking airline with odd “rainbow” style tail fins. I found out they were BRA Braathens Regional Airlines, a small domestic carrier operating mostly within Sweden from their hub at Bromma.
    So, naturally, I had to try them. At around £100 one way this was by no means a cheap flight. These Gothenburg to Stockholm shuttles are meant for the business traveller and priced accordingly. The flight was full of people off to do a day’s business in Sweden’s capital.
    However, even given the price, I was still impressed by their service standard. This is an airline that knows who its customers are and the product is sensible and thoughtful. There’s even a breakfast served on the flight, a coffee and drinks service, a hot towel and a second drinks run. Very impressive on a flight of under an hour.
    Of course, the real highlight for me was an opportunity to fly one of these old RJ aircraft again. I can remember when they were the staple of BA Cityflyer flights from London City back when I was starting my flying addiction. They’re a fun aircraft to fly. A bit cramped, but their uniqueness ensures charm overrides pragmatism for me.

  •  6 лет назад +20

    Great review of an airline I've never flown with even though I'm Swedish. They seem to target business travellers and has most of their routes in southern Sweden where I would prefer taking the train. Hopefully we'll see them expand north to for example Luleå airport in the future, would be great with more GOT-LLA departures for me atleast.Oh and btw, the lake is called Mälaren, Målaren means "the painter" in Swedish :)
    Once again, thanks for a great video, if you want to fly more BAe, another Swedish domestic carrier, Nextjet, is actually using a 146 Avro on the Gällivare-Örnsköldsvik-Arlanda route, but I believe it is operated by Astra Airways.

    • @Paul_Lucas
      @Paul_Lucas  6 лет назад +3

      Thanks Mårten! I would love to see them fly to Luleå. I have plans to take the Gothenburg to Luleå sleeper train in the summer and would return south by air. However SAS are very cheap from LLA and I’m not sure this airline could compete.

    •  6 лет назад +5

      Absolutely, lots of competition on the ARN-LLA route, both from SAS and Norwegian. You're probably right about the competition being to tough for BRA, especially since there are many leisure travellers to Luleå and not too many business travellers. Yet, considering ARN-LLA has the most passengers yearly of any domestic route in Sweden, I do think there would be room for better non-stop connections to LLA from Gothenburg, currently there's only one flight each way per day, and none on Saturdays.
      Anyway, that looks like a great trip plan, I'll be looking forward to your report!

      It was strange - they pushed us so we faced each other, as we were at the mouth of a taxiway. That SAS flight was also for Stockholm, but Arlanda rather than Bromma. I expect we chased each other across Sweden for a while!

    • @williamnyberg8626

      It is not so unusual in sweden, i think it is for the simplicity. They can de ice taxi and take off close in time, so the ATC can focus on other things like inbound flights. But hear me, it is just my guess.

    I flew on the BAE146 with Air Wisconsin and US Air in the late 80’s early 90’s. It was an interesting aircraft. I loved the ‘hounds of Honslow’ every time the flaps came down.

    • @Paul_Lucas
      @Paul_Lucas  6 лет назад

      I’d forgotten the 146 was used in the States. Surprising really as there’s a lot of real estate to build airports and you don’t have many tiny, poky airports like Bromma or London City. Even regional airports in the US take up a lot of land and the runway lengths are very good.

    • @mrbpdx
      @mrbpdx 6 лет назад +1

      Paul's Trip Reports Oh, Paul, I do believe you have to come over here and experience Washington National, Chicago Midway and John Wayne Orange County. Especially the latter as take-off out of there is Disney’s Greatest E-Ticket ride! 737NGs and 757s takeoff straight up!

    • @Paul_Lucas
      @Paul_Lucas  6 лет назад +2

      I’ve been to DCA and MDW, as far as American airports go they’re on the small side. But they each have a 7000 and 6500 foot runway respectively. You can fit a 757 in both of those! London City has a 4900 foot runway and Lugano just 4600 - approaching the minimums for the RJ.

    • @jasonmoors1191
      @jasonmoors1191 6 лет назад +1

      I too have flown Air Wisconsin when they flew the BAE 146-200's in the early '80's--one flight was from CWA-GRB-ORD,only a 20 minute hop from CWA-GRB,sat in the first row,window seat so as to capture on audio the sound of the engines and the APU noise from outside--Air Wisconsin also flew the -300 variant--VERY distinct sound the flaps make when extending/retracting during flight

    • @billyboblillybob344
      @billyboblillybob344 5 лет назад

      @@Paul_Lucas For what it's worth, the engines for these aircraft are from an American company. Their birth is from a military engine used on the Northrop A-9 which lost its competition with the A-10 warthog. Go figure.

    The degree markings are for maintenance when rigging the flaps after coming out of phase inspections. Dually, they can be used in an emergency situation for one of the cabin crew to relay to the pilot's the position of the flaps if there is any doubt or issue with the indications in the cockpit.

    Next year the Tramway "Tvärbanan" will get to Bromma Airport which means you have a transportation method to the airport that's not dependent on the road traffic as the Tram will have it's own tracks.
    "Tvärbanan" is part of a partial ring around Stockholm to facilitate sideways connections.
    When it's innaugurated i would reccomend taking it to "Alvik" and there switch to the Green Underground line it goes through the city center and being the oldest Underground is just below ground level.

    Is't been a good while sinc I flew with Braathens myself. In fact, that they hadn't even been restructured back then. You are actually flying with Braathens Regional Aviation.g before 2016.
    BRA actually consists of two sub-brands, There is the Aviationoperating the jets, and the Airways branch, operating the smaller regional routes with ATR 72 aircraft.I Braathens Regional Airlines was created in 2016 following the merger of Malmö Aviation and Sverigeflyg. I flew with Malmö Aviation back in the early 2010s, before they phased out their Saab 2000 fleet.

    BRA was to be the premiere airline for the CS-200 aircraft. The pulled out after massive delays. The airline is owned by the grandson of the founder of Braathens SAFE (1946-2005). The 737NG in GOT, LN-TUA was the first 700 del direct to an airline and not via Boeing control center. This was the NG with most cycles and TT of any NG. It was b/u a year a go I think. Like you, I love the Avro! Good job!

    The flap angle markings under wings are (I guess) for maintenance. When the test the flapsettings on the ground they can see to check if the flaps are in de correct position. And if there are in flight problems with the flaps position indicator in the flightdeck , one of the pilolts could go in to the cabin and check if the flaps are in the correct position. I have seen similar markings on other types of airplanes. I have never been on a BAE 146 Avrojet though. Thanks for sharing!

    There's a candy shop i frequent in the industrial area just before Runway 30 and the planes fly straight over it with about 500 meters to go.
    It's really cool.

    This brought back fond memories of flying Edmonton (YEG) to Vancouver (YVR) on the BaE 146. Very comfortable for a short haul flight. On hot days while loading, ewater vapour would curl up from the air vents, so flight attendants wpuld make an announcement.

    I have always liked going between Östersund and Bromma. Short distance to the city of Stockholm. And you can use the local buses instead of expensive airport shuttles.

    Such a smooth flight, and a regional airline operating short hops on small planes even manages to be classy and have attention to detail! My only criticism is that everything seems to be only in Swedish. If they're business-oriented, especially in Europe with its largely integrated economy, that means that they are even more likely to have foreign passengers who don't understand a word of Swedish. This is a criticism I have also for airlines in my own country - Brazil, where nearly everything is only in Portuguese on domestic flights. Great video as usual, Paul!

      Sweden is a weird one. Actually English signs are less common in Sweden than in a lot of Europe, at least in my experience. They are very protective of their own heritage, I guess. Spoken English is always excellent though.
      This is a domestic only airline (with an exception of one route to Helsinki where Swedish is a minority language anyway), so I wasn’t surprised to see little English.

    Never knew that Avro was still making passenger planes. I do like the smaller aircraft, there is something about flying this way that the larger aircraft seem to miss out on. Thank you for the trip report.

    • @Paul_Lucas

      They aren’t still making them - this is a very old aircraft, the Avro name being revived by British Aerospace to make them. The original Avro went defunct way back in the 60s.

    Good puns in there. Bra means good or great depends at context or emphasis in Swedish. So a sign near the lounge that says "BRA for Sweden" It can also (means Good for Sweden). Then a magazine says "BRAkoll" It means good check/ good watch. :)

    Very nice trip and meal service, cool to see a UK built jet flying. USAir had the 146's, I think they came from the merger with PSA in 1987 or 88.

    The flap angles are marked because the hydrawlincs system runs the flaps and if the hydraulics were to fail they would droop and it's a quick visual indicator if the hydraulics are working to capacity

    You should come to norway and fly with Wideroe, kinda the same thing, smaller plains tho, in some of the routes they only have room for like 30 people. Dash-8-300! And if you fly high north you may be lucky enough to see the northern light now in the winter season! Great video yet again, and keep up with the good work!

    Try the Dornier Jet 328 from London City to Billund ! Or the Saab 340 DAT from Esbjerg to Stavanger, I've flown on that several times. Btw, the markings you see are on most top wing mounted aircrafts. The ATR's got them too, it's for indication of where your flaps are set if you have an malfunction on the flap indicator or are unsure whether it's set in the right position or not. You can see the markings from the cockpit.
