The thing that makes this unique as a pop song is the way she sings the first few lines then raises the melody by a semitone, sings a few more lines, raises it by another semitone, etc. It's subtle but disorientating and creates a persistent building of tension towards the chorus. Genius!
You are spot on with this, there is such a progressive feel to her music and it's one of the many, many things I love about her! I saw RAYE in Newcastle supporting Jess Glynne in 2016, and the musicianship, energy and feel throughout every song simply blew me away! I genuinely struggle to put into words how much respect and love I have for all of her music, which can actually be quite frustrating! Haha I travelled from Newcastle to see her headline show in at XOYO in London - 09/02/2017 - and it was certainly worth the trek! Yet another phenominal performance that is almost indescribable to anyone who wasn't there. 2017 is going to be the year for RAYE!
