I love the fact that Jonathan says he played the character of Barnabas with human values rather than just as a vampire. That's what made him so endearing. We weren't watching a vampire but rather a tortured human being dealing with something supernatural that was happening to him.
I love actor Jonathan Frid his iconic character Barnabas Collins was/is forever mesmerixing, haunting, deeply serious/dangerous and caring "all" in one brought much Life and charisma to Dark Shadows. Rest in sweet harmony, Mr. Frid.
And this, ladies and gentlemen, is the power of Jonathan Frid! He made the character of Barnabas Collins so sympathetic, his portrayal influenced 2 future vampire series! Stephanie Meyer must have been a DS fan in her younger days. Look at the last name of the vampire family in her TWILIGHT book and movie series. Very similar! Hell, TRUE BLOOD was a hit on HBO that was also based on a book series. And what was the name of the vampire on this series? BILL COMPTON, initialed B.C... just like Barnabas Collins! Veeery interesting...🇵🇷🇺🇸🤣
Christopher Lee, who played Dracula for Hammer Films portrayed his character as a lonely, cursed existence. Cursed with immortality, longing for love ; forever denied to him.He played other characters as well and passed away too. His Saruman in the. LOTR was his last role I think. :-)
He said here he never thought of it as camp. and he played it seriously, as an intelligent sensible man. That's why I don't like it when the people laugh. I also take it seriously.
I agree whole heartenly..."there's nothing campy about DARK SHADOWS and it's legendary Cast that brought those iconic characters to vivid life. I took this much beloved haunting Classic TV show to heart: very Gothic serious and chilly.
Loved his portrayal of Barnabas Collins , many layers. But I would have to disagree with him on one aspect. He mentioned Barnabas's hatred for the one that loved him the witch Anjolique, but I would have to say to him the grudging affection for her comes through.
I think Barnabas Collins was the Forerunner, the Prototype for Good Vampires like Angel from the Buffyverse, the Vampires from that Teen Series of MOvies whose name I forgot and The Vampires from True Blood Series. I remember Jonathan Frid in some Made for TV Supernatural Movie, but I don't think he did much else besides Dark Shadows. IF I am wrong, please let me know.
Mr. Frid did not want to do anymore movies nor TV shows. He loved and preferred the theater and reading before a live audience. In 1973 ? he appeared in the Shelly Winters , Joseph Cotton TV horror movie The Devil's Daughter. Frid played the mute butler. Then he appeared in the cult movie by Oliver Stone called Seizure. He had no interest in doing anymore films nor TV roles after that.
@@thejupiter2574 - How come he didn't want to do any more Movies or TV Shows after Dark Shadows? Did he think acting in a TV Show or Movie was to quote my namesake- "Prostituting his Talents."
Barnabas could have just been in a coma, suspended state, asleep and didnt have any thoughts nor dreams. There was a large cross affixed inside of the coffin lid which paralyzed , weakened and suspended Barnabas so that he could not break out of the coffin. That was good planning.
Really?? Hmmm, you might have caught him when he was just exhausted and overwhelmed by the fans at his table and following him all over the hotel. I've met him many times and I was amazed at how patient, kind and gracious I saw him to be but he did get overwhelmed and annoyed by the crowds especially when some stupid fans kept calling him and addressing him as 'Barnabas' the character. That annoyed him.
Amazing actor! Perfectly cast for Barnabas. Love his gentlemanly vampirism.

Yes. That is what I see as I rewatch DARK SHADOWS. Watching it as an adult I see it differently than as a tween.
Never been so in love as with Jonathan Frid, not just with Barnabas Collins, but Jonathan himself.

Love this interview. I am glad we have this to enjoy about what Jonathan thought of his character, Barnabas, and how to play him, which was superb.

Thank you for posting this
Wish I could tell Johnathan Frid how much I love watching him and Greyson Hall on Dark Shadows.
been watching "Dark Shadows" around midnight 5 days a week. Channel 996 Decades channel.
Loved his portrayal of Barnabas Collins , many layers. But I would have to disagree with him on one aspect. He mentioned Barnabas's hatred for the one that loved him the witch Anjolique, but I would have to say to him the grudging affection for her comes through.
Sad he's gone.
He used to scare the liver out of me!

its shocking johnathan never married how sad! RIP!
I wondered what Barnabas thought about all those years he was chained in the coffin.

@@thejupiter2574 Yeah. Joshua Collins was no dummy.
Barnabas--you could turn yourself into a bat and appear at windows so why dint you turn yourself into a bat and get out of that coffin??
Met him a few times, never found him to be very gracious at all...
