    I know this is an old video but I just ran into this problem last night. Jack dempsey was very bloated and swimming all over the place. could swim straight mostly head down and at top of tank. I just did a big water change and rearrange of the tank coupled with I have him with some electric blue african ciclids so he was already stressed with them and then the tank being different. When I tested the water it was still at a very high nitrate level. He's in a seperat tank and can tell his stress level is down. Cleaned fuval pump/filter out and doing partial water changes twice a week to try and get the tank levels down. Thanks again for the video. I searched all over and yours was the most informative i found. if he doesn't improve in the next couple days might try the salt/epsom salt trick.

    BTW, epsom salt is very effective.
    Discus do block up (not bloat or hex) and epsom salt cleared their poo within 4-6 in most cases.

  • @TMAquatics

    I agree. I feed my discus all high protein foods. One food is over 60% protein. Never had bloat or digestive issues. Never had Hex issues. Pristine water quality and immaculate tank hygeine is important!!!

    Hey Jay. Found your segment ( as we talked about yesterday). Just like you can add MSM to their food, so can you add Magnesium. I like to use Magnesium Chloride find their favorite food, let it soak up. Magnesium is a laxative when given more than needed, so don't over do it constantly as they will poop out beneficial gut bacteria as well.
    I would feed them probiotic feed after cleaning them out. Safe travels back to TX.

    I learned something tonight, thank you! I had always heard bloat was caused by to much protein as well. Good to know just keeping my fish happy will help keep it away. I always tell my friends with cichlids change 1/3 of your water every 3 days, 80 deg. and 8.0 ph. nice and simple and the fish will love it! Congrats on 1000... I just hit 60 WOO-HOO!!!

    I'm so glad. So Malawi 'bloat' is caused by stress and bad water quality and not high protein food. However, do fish get bloat if they have a visible large stomach? I'm worried because I accidentally dropped too much fish food into the tank. :(

    • @Jaywil07
      @Jaywil07  8 лет назад +2

      +AverageAsian HD remember when a fish holds a lot of food in their mouth they struggle to breathe causing stress.

    I have 1 out of my 12 cichlids (A Demasoni) showing the classic signs of Bloat...spitting food, lethargic, hiding, white stringy poop. My Nitrate and Ammonia levels are at nearly 0ppm every time I test (I have the fish store test once a week or so). My tank is a 75 gallon, I am pumping about 700gpm using Marineland HOB filters (2x penguin 350s). My tank has what I would think are plenty of hiding spaces, so much so I had to dismantle my decor to catch the sick fish. All of the fish tend to appear happy and calm for the most part and I see no physical signs of the affected fish being bullied. I generally alternate foods between cichlid pellets, blood worms and "emerald entree" which is a bunch of shrimp and vegies. I have had 2 other Demasoni fish die from this same problem a few months ago...all of the other fish are/seem fine. What the hell am I doing that is making the Demasoni sick? Oh, water PH is usually right around 7 also...I am at a loss.

    • @Jaywil07
      @Jaywil07  8 лет назад +1

      +Walter R. Most African cichlids are mouth brooders they keep it in their mouth so their Billy's don't get big.

    • @jaredgaiser3140
      @jaredgaiser3140 8 лет назад +1

      Depending on the kind of fish, they either just lay eggs and protect them or carry them in their mouths. Fish not carrying eggs or fry will still eat . Mouth brooders will not eat while carrying their fry, but you can see the eggs or fry in their mouths pretty easily. If your fish is not a mouth brooder and it is not eating, it is sick.

      +Jay Wilson sorry man, but all you fish channel guys are losing it.... seemingly too concerned with entertaining us, being a "host", just trying to impress manufacturers so you get free stuff. I highly doubt there is a single hobbyist who subscribes to be entertained. I subscribe to be educated, and haven't learned anything from you in over a year, so.... have "fun", but expect your audience to dwindle unless the value comes back. Peace and good luck.

      +Chris Locke my role in the hobby is always been the honest fun and informative I also get back to the community in many ways my job is not to be a host I do appreciate the positive feedback and I do hope you find exactly what you're looking for. If my sole purpose was to entertain to get free products from every manufacture I wouldn't have to spend a dime in the hobby and I do spend quite a bit of money in this hobby but thank you again for subscribing my channel for well over year.

      @ChrisLocke1969 9 лет назад

      +Jay Wilson ok man, you've nearly convinced me to re-subscribe... I guess Im just a little frustrated with content lately - tempts me to make videos, too. Again, I, and surely countless people have learned lots about our beloved hobby from people like you, and I guess my frustration without learning anything new lately gave me an attitude this morning watching your video. If I could make just one suggestion, itd be less face-to-camera talk, and more show-and-tell educating, learn-by-example programming, please! :) Ok, I'm resubscribing, thanks for responding and being honest, setting me straight!

      I don't want to set you straight. All of us have an idea of what we want out of RUclips and this community and I try to listen and adapt to all my viewers. If you are unhappy with something telling me only will make my channel better. Be upset is one thing but talking it out and finding that common ground were we can agree to move forward and give you the knowledge your looking for his much better. Thank you for staying subscribed. Have a great week.

    I love the fact that you are sharing great information with fellow hobbyists and I watch your channel once in awhile even though I tend to find your electric personality a bit annoying. Thank you for doing what you do ! :)
    Regarding bloat I have been keeping Tropheus for years and once in a blue moon I have had to deal with bloat regardless of how clean my tank water was, the one thing that kept it from spreading was a combination of Metro and Epsom salts. As long as I started treatment immediately I was okay, it's hesitation that can lead to more deaths. In my own opinion I do believe over feeding can be a factor, and if you follow a normal feeding schedule where less is more you will be better off.
    Water quality is extremely important but I think it is also important to not state unachievable goals to your viewers. That fact that some people are able to achieve a zero nitrate reading is really quite impressive but most aquarists will find it nearly impossible to obtain an ongoing reading of zero. My point is that the basic reality is that a regular reading of 5-20 ppm is a more practical goal for the majority of hobbyist fish keepers and even this may be hard to maintain for some.

    Love your tank. looks amazing. I myself have a 187 gallon tank, and i think i have had bloat in it. i do change my water regulaly tho, and this is why i am abit puzzeled about why they got it. Stress i also dont get, since notthing had changed for a long time, and they had been fine. I really liked your video tho, and it helped me out alot. lots of facts that was hard to find anywhere else. Thanks alot! Greetings from Denmark

    Wait so jay, for your tank, you'd need 7 cups of epsom salt? Wouldn't that be around 4 pounds of epsom salt? That sounds like a lot. Good video again
