Casper finally hit a rough idle in its 272.5k miles! I will forever be a 10th gen f150 for reliability, general maintenance of plugs and coils is all I’ve really had to do. Rear end spider gears were bad last summer fixed that and it’s been truckin the whole way ever since! Glad to see Larry happy again!

I really don't like ford but I love the 10th gen. Amazingly reliable and I have fond memories with my uncle and me just enjoying life going around town having fun in that truck.
I used to hate them, but the appearance has kind of grown on me. I'd definitely drive one because the 4.6/5.4 2 valve are amazing engines but it wouldn't be my first choice. Unfortunately a lot of them, like a lot of good trucks, ended up with these types of people that beat on them, or high school kids and they've all been ragged out.

Grandpa passed away and my grandma kept it and gave it to me when i turned 16. drove it till i was 20. 2 years into my army contract, i walk out of my barracks one day and find it on bricks. someone stole the tires, wheels, and my bumper. in the process, they jacked it up by the drive shaft, causing it to snap. had to scrap it as i didnt have the money to fix it up and i already had a newer truck that was more practical. still miss it though.
Just sold my 2018 Silverado and bought a 98 F150 4.6l 4x4 exact same color as yours the body on your truck is in insane shape. Mine will be getting patch panels and repaint soon... but I paid 2500 for it. So not bitching..
If you go buy a bottle of Lucas Oil Stabilizer, The Super Thick Stuff. Add it in and in about 1000 miles of driving it will seal the rings and valve seals and won't use another drop.
Regarding the plug being rough coming out in the beginning, don’t really worry about it. I work on cars and doing oil changes, over half of all fords from this era just don’t want the plug to come out. I’ve never seen that be a culprit of a leak but it just makes a mess when you take it out since oil starts to drain as soon as it’s remotely loose
Good choice on oil! One of the best oils you can get! K&N not needed. For oil filter Motorcraft is good or wix. Napa gold is same as wix but napa has went way up in price! You could've went with a 5w30 or something. Sounds like Larry has a lot of miles.. I hav a 98 f150 4.6 and all its ever had is non-synthetic 10w40 and it has 270k now on original engine and trans. Still running great!
and here i am changing my oil on my 2003 f150 once a year and putting seafoam in it every 3-4 months just to keep it clean but man i just hit 290,000 miles on it last week and shes rough but it refuses to die
Haven't seen a 5.4 with the oil filter right next to the oil pan. My 2001 has it sideways right above the front differential. My brother's 98 it's right behind the front bumper on the driver's side.
@@keegenm.6154, yeah, and you can barely fit an oil filter wrench to get it loose. It's also tricky to get the new one to catch the threads on the engine.

I own a old DNR 2003 F150 XL. Got 275k miles dunno how many hours. Runs like a top. Sadly needs new oil pan gasket which plan on doing mine is 4x4 a/c even still works.
Did a good job, I would’ve ran some sea foam in it before the oil change and take it up the road and back to really let it clean any kind of build ups and shit.
If he drinks a little oil after a bit of mileage on these 5.4s. They tend to not use as much of a thicker oil, and some lucas unless i have been lucky with most of the ones i been around. I still run 5w20 in mine but once we use a little more oil im gonna run 10w40 with lucas and get mine up there some more

Really with that mileage? My 2002 FX4 Supercrew averages about 11. I try to drive slowly but my foot gets the better of me from time to time. I like to burn off some carbon every now and then when merging and passing.
@@Samuel-zl7yw, My 2001 4×4 averages about 11mpg as well when I'm driving around town. I've gotten as high 16 mpg when I've taken it on long trips on the interstate. It is still stock height and wheels with factory tire size.

I want to eventually get bigger tires next time but I think my truck sits kinda low due to 19 year old ranch I shocks and a bed cap. Any advice on larger tires?
Ford should of never used 5W20. Blend on the 5.4. 10W30 is the lowest rating I would ever go. Ford used 5W20 for better gas mileage reason's. Plus come on Man. 5 years between oil changes. That's not how to treat a Ford truck. Shawn.
@@TheBarbellBandit Yes, I Agree on the 0w20 and the small areas the oil flows. But I hear Ford went with 5w20 for gas mileage. My 2005 Taurus SE 3.0 takes 5w20. But my 2017 2.0 turbocharged Escape takes 10w30. For heat reason's. So I went to full Synthetic oil on the Escape and use the Motorcraft blend on my Taurus 3.0 it's 16 years old. Still runs like a top and never uses any oil between oil changes. 175,000 going for 200,000 miles next. 3 sets of tires, 3 sets of brakes, all new brake lines, A/C unit, Anti freeze changed with new hoses and belt, Lower ball joints and a driver side CV shaft. Can't buy a new car now so I put this one back on the road again. Just went on a 150 mile round trip and got 28 mpg. Wow! That 3.0 Vulcan is a great motor. TO Bad Ford couldn't have made the Eco-boost better. Its crap! Ask me how I know! Shawn.
I wouldn’t do the high mileage oils unless it’s leaking. They have additives that will help the gaskets/seals swell to minimize leaks. Over time you may have leaks if you go back to a non high mileage oil. I’d run 5w-30 all day in that engine.

I run 5w30 in mine since it's over 100k. Uses a quart every few months. Larry is about normal lol. Lucky you dont have a 4x4 with a lift, my drain port just dumps right on the crossmember for the front lift brackets 😂
@@landondrewery7872 mine has the filter relocation to the drivers front fender, lucked out there. And a nice chunk of cardboard catches the dribbles off the crossmember lol.

For anyone on a tight budget: You don't need an oil filter wrench, you just need a wrench with good grip.

My 98 model has the 5.4l in it. It's my daily driver. Shes got 98,000 on the clock. I love it.

Yeah that's stupid I don't want it slipping that's what I use vice grips
my tools arent organized so i sometimes use a deep socket wit a breakr bar. i just grip the socket so it dont tilt. so far so good.
Also used a standard size on a metric bolt.

Do you mean the differential was bad? I got a big clunk when put on reverse gear. Changed the U- joints and hasn't solved.

I use ams oil for all my trucks and wow it’s amazing no problems and very very smooth

Not really, ford's quality control back then was top notch.
My 2001 F-150 is over 220,000 miles with no oil leaks. It does have a Ford remanufactured motor though.

You don’t need to prime, just lube it up and make sure he’s hand tight. But it’s your truck, do what you like
Pro tip put water in your engine before you change your oil to get all the sludge out

I always leave the filter in the box when i fill it so if u miss some it just goes in the box

You need to try carbonteking that truck it might help clean out the combustion chamber so it is not burning as much oil.
you dont gotta lube the new filter seal cause theres some already there from taking out the old one
