    This music is the greatest verse ever penned in all of time. The divinity, the truth, the beauty is devastating. Devastating to my soul. A thousand galaxies for Beethoven would not be enough to pay the debt this world owes him.

    • @tronduick7028
      @tronduick7028 9 лет назад +9

      Well said, Mr. Gill. We struggle for metaphor. I often look at pictures of the great galaxy in Andromeda and imagine its song. Maybe it's Beethoven's after all. No one ever wrote songs more other-worldly. They are everywhere in this mass and to me more perfectly inform his late work than any other character, although I'm no musician. I'm just glad I have ears.

      Yes, absolutely agree.. The most glorious music ever written by human hands, and he was totally deaf! About the Son of God, died for the sins of the world, buried, and risen on the 3rd day according to scriptures! Who can help but believe! Beethoven's Christus Am Olberge ("Christ on the Mount of Olives", Op.85) is also a masterpiece which is exceeding underplayed and unknown. The cello solo ushering in the duet between the Seraph and Messiah, words cannot do justice to convey! Also most biblical presentation of the scriptures/gospel to music ever (next to Handel's Messiah)!

      Beautiful and wonderful to be sure, and by his own admission antedated by J. S. Bach, including his Mass in b minor where the text predominates. ruclips.net/video/EH6wdRVqoXQ/видео.html

      +Contending for The Faith:
      The interesting thing is that Beethoven's faith transcended creed. He was highly critical of the catholic church and about Jesus he said: "He was nothing more than a crucified Jew" and Haydn once remarked about him that he was something of an atheist. Yet he still believed in something he called "deity".

    Beethoven's greatest work. It stands head and shoulders above any pretenders to the throne: the Hammerklavier, the Grosse Fuge, Fidelio, even the ninth symphony, none of them comes close. Here Beethoven finally penetrated the veil between the worlds and let us hear the voices of the heavenly hosts.

    Bernstein, Reiner, and Von Karajan's interpretations of Beethoven were pure magic. I think Bernstein especially related to Beethoven's mix of genius, passion, and gentleness vs. explosive joy. As well as his tortured and conflicted soul. Kindred spirits a century or so apart.

    The cellist Hans van Weydom Claterbos was indeed my father. It really touches me you remember him! Meanwhile, I’ve found quiet exactly the date of this performance: March 1978, two month before my father had to leave for reasons of health. He is there, and also Krebbers, who was one year later to leave, forced by an accident. One year before, De Machula had retired and was succeeded by Harro Ruijsenaars, who is also there. As for Pollard and Labordus, they must have been on their periodic leave.

    This is the recording I own on vinyl. I love Beethoven but must admit that it took me some time to warm to this piece, an acquired taste, even for those who like classical music and choral music. When I'm in the right mood, there's nothing else I'd rather listen to.

    Beethoven's heart was breaking, as it slowly did for the rest of his days. He did want to praise God, in whom he believed. He was a lonely, lonely man who never really experienced love from anyone. It shows in this glorious piece, so amazingly led by The Maestro, and nothing is its equal.

      The relationship between Beethoven and God, as revealed in Christ, was complex ... but, one does sense him being called back home, if you will, from about 1818 to the end... it may be that Beethoven, his heart as deep and full as it was, found he could at last go nowhere else ... humanity in the mass can do nothing to satisfy the needs and longings. or reciprocate such love ... and then of course, he was not able to be with his Immortal Beloved, and to where is anyone going for consolation for a wound like that? One can get clear through everything the world and its people have to offer ... and find that only Christ suffices ... and perhaps, as hints in his music and biography suggest, perhaps Beethoven confronted that reality in his last years.

    I too purchased this on vinyl not long after its release. Beautiful Deutsche Grammophon box. It was my introduction to this great work, and still to this day, after having heard many performances, including the famed Klemperer, I think this is its most inspired rendition. The soloists in particular here deliver on a level I don't think I have heard before or since in a choral work.

      I agree. Normally I'm more a HIP guy when it comes to Beethoven. But this is so otherworldly even in the relatively slow tempo and the soloists are so perfect, I think it is one of Bernsteins best recordings.

    I adore this music! And it's narrative approach as opposed to development is unique among much of Beethoven's major output.The CD version of this performance was the very first MS that I purchased! I enjoyed it at the time, but have since moved on to other recordings. I felt, as I do, watching this performance again years later, that the sound is rather dry, and Carol Moser's top rather tight.But, I really liked seeing some old timers: i.e. Kollo and Moll in visual performance. Camera work is of course limited. Would have liked to see more of the violinist in his solo in the Benedictus. Bernstein conducts a concise and interesting performance, by no means consistently slow. The Agnus Dei may well be the most beautiful I've heard, surely in part because of the great soloists.

    • @mattbalfe2983
      @mattbalfe2983 Год назад

      The theme is woven throughout the piece from the opening kyrie ( its hard to recognize bc its so slow and dotted rhythm.) To the subject of the big Gloria fugue ( I'm pretty sure it's inverted there) to the opening of the Credo. Or at least these instances are merely thematically related at worst.

    In reply to Fritz Maisenbacher: Actually no. Lenny's delicious syncopation and inventive phrasing, in this as in all his work AFAIK, limns stuff in masterpieces I otherwise don't hear, and I've been listening to him do it for five decades. A relentless showman sure enough: but he knows his ****. More, he has oceans to work with here beyond anything Mahler ever dreamed.

      Nothing is quite like it, though for me the end of the gloria can come close ( I'm really picky about the performance on that one though.) And otherwise I think only the Grosse Fugue and maybe the Hammerklavier fugue come close to this intensity.

    Maybe too much passion and histrionics by the Maestro on the podium but that is the unique nature of this music and Bernstein's style ... a perfect match now made in "heaven", but thank god it's on RUclips.

    I find moments of great beauty here, but also a good deal I don't particularly care for. (It actually engages me more in the later movements.)
    It's not surprising, the grouping of this mass commonly with Bach's B Minor Mass, as both are works of surpassing technical proficiency but neither quite captured the popular imagination as did their many other works.
    Beethoven here is a bit too dilatory, too far from his power as an expositor of narrative and indefatigable exploiter of tight motifs.
    One would not guess this was by Beethoven's hand, if naively listening.

      +John Linton I'm in general accordance with Reed Peter and say that this is an interesting response, to which I almost entirely disagree.
      "Beethoven here is a bit too dilatory, too far from his power as an expositor of narrative and indefatigable exploiter of tight motifs."
      With this statement in particular I take issue. Too dilatory, too far from his power as expositor of narrative and indefatigable exploiter of tight motifs?
      Many would argue that this is not only Beethoven's greatest work, but the supreme expression of his deepest, most heartfelt thoughts. I think the music is far from dilatory but is rather exquisitely paced being full of beautiful motifs and contrasting moods which create a compelling spiritual narrative, an expressive narrative which is really unmatched by any other setting of the mass. The music flows so naturally throughout, with seamless integration of the many different segments making up a magnificent whole.
      "One would not guess this was by Beethoven's hand, if naively listening."
      This I may actually agree with, but only because the work is so unlike anything that Beethoven had ever written, it is really on another level altogether, the very culmination of all his musical powers of the highest order and merit.

      Good ! Those people are human, not God.
      Am I the only one on earth, who can ignore mistakes?!?
      I recall Haydn's account of a performance, whereby he
      said that quite a few notes fell under the table.
      Even a famous composer works with people
      (not God), who make mistakes. Who cares?
